      I have a question. I got this bug that wherever i put a portal it links me to the same portal and doesnt create another one. so in a sense i can create a portal thousands of blocks away from my house,go through it, when im in the nether i just go through it again then it ends up in my portal at home. its kind of like cheating to be honest

    • @calvinchapman6824

      It was mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but the Y coordinate is also taken into effect. The y coordinate needs to be matched if the portals still aren't linking.
      Great tutorial, I'ts good to have a comprehensive Bedrock one!

      silentwisperer I have a super serious bug with the nether portal. I was entering my house in the overworld from the nether, but according to my gf the chunk my portal was in hadn’t loaded. From my perspective, I was stuck on the loading screen that says building terrain. Anyways, I had to force close my game. When I loaded back into my world, I was in a village 3k blocks away that I had slept in, with a completely empty inventory and xp bar. There was no trace of my items or xp anywhere either, and my gf got there way faster that 5min. I don’t know if I glitched into the void or something, but I do know that this game is broken af. I don’t know what caused it or what fixes it, my only guess is that i had used that portal dozens of times in that play session. I don’t know how to submit a bug report, and if you did it would get more traction anyways, so please do so!

    Y coordinate 100% matters. Just that there is no factor of 8 involved. If you create 2 stacked portals at same x/z coords in both nether and overworld with one set at y=20 and other at y=60 they will link perfectly.
    Have to take this into account when trying to create shortcuts to nether where the vertical difference on overworld is similar to the horizontal difference in overworld and the nether elevation is closer to either end. Sometimes have to deliberately skew one or both to ensure links work as intended.

  • @talis61
    @talis61 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Make sure your portals are oriented on the correct axis; so a X axis portal in OW becomes a X axis portal in Nether and same goes for Z axis portals - this only really matters when you have portals VERY close to each other. If u have a portal in your house and a portal 30 blocks vertically down on the Y axis then if X and Z are an exact match you are gonna have to use the Y axis to compensate....tricky but doable...you'll need quick elevators to make things manageable....
    Also, if your very first Nether Portal doesn't match exactly, then correct it in the Nether as silent said. For a SECOND portal within a close local area in OW, build the portal in OW first, note the coordinates and do the maths - then travel to Nether using FIRST portal and build the corresponding SECOND portal in the Nether and THEN travel through SECOND portal...repeat for 3rd, 4th and so on for portals in a close local area (like a big base for example). For distant portals (e.g. a distant mushroom island), start the whole process again. This can sometimes fix portals that refuse to link correctly but isn't always the case...

    • @Cobra_Scythe
      @Cobra_Scythe ปีที่แล้ว

      does it matter which side of the portal the coordinates you choose to divide by 8 are from?

    • @roughtakes7271
      @roughtakes7271 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cobra_Scythe Havent played in years so I may be not be 100% accurate. If you are talking the horizontal plane of the portal (the bit you step into) then because portals in the later updates could be made a lot bigger than originally then I guess it could matter. It really only matters though for portals that are VERY close to each other in the Nether where the game has to round values +/- when you have values that are not EXACTLY divisible by 8..... in these cases depending on the rounding values by the game you can get results that are REALLY hard to work out and correct - HTH

    But what causes multiple overworld portals to be linked to the same portal in the nether (as shown in your guardian farm video)? Also how does height affect portal linking exactly? These mechanics are still so mysterious and unreliable.

    • @IceWotor

      Maybe the portal in the nether is the most recent one, that happened to my portals once. I never really linked the portal but the 3 portals in the overworld was linked to the most recent made portal in the nether

    • @orangeunderscore
      @orangeunderscore 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment is old, but from my testing, height won’t affect portal linking, the multiple over world portals only linked to the one nether portal in the nether is because there’s only one portal within a certain area in the nether. If you were to build multiple portals in the nether, the overworld portals would link to those.

    • @swiftdrifter01
      @swiftdrifter01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nether portals will search for a portal in a certain radius and if they don’t find one, they will generate one somewhere. So all the overworld portals see the single nether portal and teleport players there. The reason you should link nether portals to the exact coordinates (when not building farms etc) is because that is where the search starts. So a portal will always start searching at its coordinates and if there is a portal there, it will use that one.

    Your method (which is what I use too, btw) works because you make simplifying assumptions: You only used 4 x 5 portals, you picked a block to base your calculations on, and there was plenty of unobstructed area on the nether side to generate a portal in. But keep in mind that the game can't make these assumptions. The portal you're coming from can be any size up to 23 x 23, there's no particular portal block within it that's favored for doing the calculation, and some of them could correspond to obstructed destinations while others don't. On top of that, there may already be a portal somewhere on the other side. The game is supposed to link to it if it's close enough, but close enough to what, exactly? Again, there's no favored block for calculating the destination, and different blocks can correspond to different destination blocks. There could be zero, one, or even multiple portals close enough, depending on which block you calculate from.
    I'm not faulting your tutorial--like I said, I use the same method. I'm just saying that the game has to do a lot more work than you did to find or generate a portal on the other side, and I don't think there's a perfect algorithm that works best for all cases. So calling it a bug seems a bit unfair.

    • @mather468
      @mather468 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the game has to do a lot more work, but it is still ridiculous what it considers "close enough". Once I 've built 2 overworld portals that were about 1000 blocks apart and both linked to the same portal in the nether. It gives me the impression that the game is "lazy" to create new portals in the nether.

    • @auldrick

      @@mather468 It's doing what it's supposed to do. When you activate a portal, the game searches for a portal in the opposite dimension up to 128 blocks from the calculated position. That includes searching 128 blocks in the *Nether* when you build one in the Overworld. If it finds a portal 127 blocks away in the Nether, it will link it. But the Overworld portal that one was already linked to could be up to 1016 blocks from where you built your newest portal. You don't have to settle for that though. Just go to the Nether, to somewhere closer to the calculated position, and build a portal there. It will link back to your new Overworld portal, and the two pairs of portals will then be separated. Rule of thumb: It's generally easier to get your portals linked the way you want if you build the Nether side and let it generate the Overworld side.

    @bokwoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    demonstrating how you would link multiple portals in close proximity is genius. Most people just link two and leave it at that, raising doubt whether it would work if other portals were set up nearby.

    question: so if the coordinates in the overworld are divided by 8, if I get x.5 or less I build at x, and if the decimal is more than 5 I build the portal at x+1 right?

    • @Kim-yk2md
      @Kim-yk2md 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damon Long I found out that the portal in the overworld or nether will send you to the nearest when divided or multiplied respectively by 8 of its coordinates so as long as theres no other portal nearby the linking will be succesful.

    I have a couple portals in close proximity in the nether (not even as close as Silent in this vid) divided x and z by 8 and everything properly and it works fine going from nether to overworld but both overworld portals always bring me to the same nether portal 😕
    Edit: Fixed it! One of the portals was a couple of blocks higher than the other and I moved up the lower one to be one the same Y coordinate and now they link properly

    Hehe that is one of little things works in Java and Bedrock: the coordinate system for portals :)
    The Major secret for me is always putting the portals on coordinates integer divideable by eight like 16 or 24, not 20.
    The 128 range for near nether portals sometimes is a pain in the ass.
    The 8 secret worked for me in sigle player always, but in 2 ocasions, a new nether portal was generated, in overworld, little near home, but far than 12 chunks.
    I have tons of portals, some of them little closer in nether and the difference between those is only "Y". And the 8 secret works fine :)
