Hi guys, during the holidays, I change out my photo frames to family photos from past holidays like Easter, Summer, Fall, Christmas. It gives me something to look forward to and changes it up. I'm decorating without really adding.

We get a sticker as a souvenir when we go somewhere new and have covered our garage fridge in memories of all the state/national parks, countries, and fun businesses we have visited. It’s the cheapest souvenir and our kids look forward to picking out the sticker we are getting. Bonus…most are free!

Wow, I loved that from Joshua: "If it's 100% off, don't buy it". I'll put that as a wallpaper on my phone. 😊

Don't buy the lie that you'll "miss out" on this sale. What you don't buy today, you don't need to declutter tomorrow

As a car detailing business owner, I'm always tempted to upgrade my garage with the latest tools and gadgets. Recently, I almost bought these hexagon lights for the ceiling. They would have made the space look more professional and improved visibility. But I had to remind myself that I've been running this business successfully for two years without them.
Right now, my focus is on paying off debt and finding ways to generate income more passively, like growing my TH-cam channel and offering courses. To achieve these goals, I need to reduce expenses, which means resisting the urge to buy every shiny new thing. It’s tough, but I know it's a necessary step toward working smarter, not harder, and creating the financial freedom I'm aiming for.

A pair of scrubs on clearance that didn’t quite match and I had no intention of buying when entering the store. I was very proud of myself for not purchasing just for the sake of convenience 😊

I have a great habit of reviewing my shopping cart before checking out where I look again and put back the things I know I don't need (like the cheesecake) :)

Hailey, I am the same way, always have been! I used to buy more and more and more. Now I rotate, rearrange, and redecorate. And only keep what I can properly store.
I have an 18 gallon tote of “off season” or “not right now” clothes that I can pick and choose from at times. But I would ask yourself if you really know your style and what feels and looks good on you!
I still like to buy new, but when I say new, I usually mean pieces under $5/$10 at my local thrift store. Try redecorating and shopping your home, maybe changing up certain outfits or putting things back for certain seasons. Best of luck!

I don't have the problem Hailey said but I live in Canada where we do change our clothes every few months as the seasons change! Something to think about.

Yes this!!! I have 3 winter jackets. One for -10 and under one for -15 to -25 and one for -30 and colder. The lightest jacket works for late fall and early spring.
And the last few years we have been having heat waves of above +40°C so I have added linen & cotton tops & shorts etc for those extreme temperatures. Then of course wool and sweaters for winter! I don’t think people in say California or Florida can ever relate or understand to four true seasons. The mittens, scarves and hats and all the things you NEED! 😮

Here’s something I didn’t hear mentioned: new clothing looks nicer, presents better, than older clothing. Maybe we aren’t buying high enough quality or laundering optimally, but a bright beige sweater looks dull after a year of wear. My favorite black sundress is faded after a full season of regular use. While my Levi’s will last a decade, they only look crisp and new for the first year or two. I subscribe to a capsule wardrobe, but I replace a piece or two monthly because I like each item to be in pristine condition. Again perhaps the quality of clothing has changed or my $40 dress was never going to last like a $300 dress… This isn’t about trend or shopping, it’s about having each item look crisp rather than worn.

Great point of renting clothes. My friend does that from a clothing rental company and she enjoys the variety to wear different outfits as a fashion major and still return them instead of owning a closet full of clothes

Start sewing our own clothes. (or find a tailor) You will value them much more. It's a completely different feeling.
Also think about the workers who are being exploited.

Hot take: there's a difference between fashion and compulsive consumption. If you value fashion and creativity, then putting together new outfits is a "valid hobby," and you shouldn't minimalize your spending on it arbitrarily. Minimalism should help you figure out what's valuable -- not just help you minimize. (As you've said.) "Life without art is mere survival." Don't you want a life full of art?

When a patient takes a medication, their system gets accustomed to it and the dose has to be increased again and again until the medication no longer works, it is the same with consuming anything, better to fix the cause of the underlying issue than to continually 'medicate' the symptoms. IN MY OPINION.

Another woke crock. Older generations, especially those from the depression and immediate post depression, knew the difference between price and value. Nothing was wasted. Nobody bought products they didn’t need. Clothes were mended, not thrown away. Retired clothing became rags. Everyone got on the property ladder with a modest starter home. Pretending to “discover” thrift and intelligent shopping, then making a trend out of it, is quite comical.
