Thanks for all the kind words! It is absolutely awesome to have positive feedback and good vibes. I hadn't really picked up a guitar for over a decade but I have been inspired lately to pick it back up. As for "mediocre"... I just think it is a funny title for doing these little videos. There are some absolutely amazing guitar players all over TH-cam, its ridiculous... Even at my best I feel like I was right at the high intermediate level, never could really break through to advanced and have the fluidity I want on the instrument. "Mediocre Guitarist Attempts" will be me learning songs, sharing my progress and trying to get a little better before I am so old my fingers quit working. Thanks again!
When the title said "mediocre guitarist" I was honestly expecting way worse, but I was curious because this was one of the first solos I learned when I started playing guitar and I still know it note for note. All of your bends are in tune and you have good vibrato and control. When I think of mediocre guitarists, I think of them lacking those areas which require patience and attention to detail. Advice wise, the only thing I would have you work on if you were my student is holding some of the notes a little longer and have more confidence that you can make the position shifts to a different part of fretboard in time. That and to work on timing by nailing the downbeats. Stomp that foot on the quarter notes and synch the pick with it, really nail those downbeats and the rest will lock in step with it. And then the last thing I would have my students do is have some fun with it and really go for it. Hit hard, wild out your vibrato, really go hard and get loose with it. You won't be as accurate, but the exercise is really to just let it all hang out and have fun like running too fast and skidding out or jumping too far. Really great job and I would be high fivin' and really proud if one of my students did it this well.
Thank you so much! Ok, "mediocre" might be a stretch. I feel like I am on the upper level of intermediate, Haven't quite gotten to advanced yet but I am going to work on it. Your critiques are spot on... I was worried about getting set up for the next lick so much sometimes i killed the notes I was playing, particularly on the 2 trip let runs an octave a apart. Definitely struggle with timing also so will take your advice. Thanks again for the advice. Want to do another take after a bit more practice and see if I can get it smoother / more fluid.
@@wwestbrook Yeah, that's exactly the lick I was talking about, the three note descending phrase that jumps up an octave. The way you did it was perfectly fine, but that's why we cut notes off when they could hang longer, because we're worried about that position shift. It's just a confidence thing, your hand will get there in time just fine, you've just gotta go for it. And that's applicable all over. When we're kinda setting up for a lick that's coming up, we can kinda flub the transitions. Mostly I find it's overthinking and overcompensating for what might be a harder lick or a position shift, something that gets you out of a comfort zone. It's where the old adage "if you think, you stink" comes into play. Just flow through it and it'll all weave together. And that's why I have students do a "wild" take of it and have 'em not worry about being nice and safe. It's like practicing being out of control. It's a useful tool to have in the toolbox because something's eventually going to happen that's out of your control and you just kinda go with the flow of it anyway. Sometimes, that's when the coolest things happen!
Ha! Same... That is when I started driving, had my first taste of freedom.... I must have worn this cassette out, jamming max volume in my sweet, sweet 1984 Ford Escort!
Tone is killer ...I could tell by your face before I even heard it. As far as your playing...I've payed plenty of guys who were nowhere near as good. Solid work brother👍
Sounds close, very good job. Maybe some lighter gauge strings to help with the bends they are little flat in spots. It helped me, Everyone thinks you had to play with 12 or 13s, but you don't. like bb king said to billy gibons, "Why are you working so hard? " good luck and rock on!

great tone !!
Rock on dude!
I think that was a great job! I wish I could play that good.
Thanks! Just practice, time, and avoid comparing yourself to others. I fell into that trap a lot (and still do!).
This is great! I, too, am a mediocre guitarist! I appreciate your playing because it's kick ass!
Thanks! Us mediocre guitarists have to band together! (no pun intended)
I don't think that was "mediocre" playing.
That was great sir!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
