Renowned boxing fighters Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield first competed in 1996. While many thought Tyson would win, Holyfield was confident, disclosing he had sparred Tyson in their early 20s and wasn't afraid of him. To much surprise, Holyfield defeated Tyson. In a rematch seven months later, Tyson famously bit off part of Holyfield's ear. Teddy Atlas was asked whether he was shocked when this infamous incident occurred. He recalls being at a house party on the day of the rematch. Despite Tyson's fearsome power and speed, Teddy believed Tyson lacked a deep-rooted belief in himself, leading him to predict that Tyson would get himself disqualified. Teddy observed Tyson setting an alibi by complaining about the match referee to prepare for his eventual disqualification.

Would be an interesting discussion. Tyson is open about a lot of things, but there are certain truths I don't think he wants examined too closely, and he knows Teddy might bring him to some places he doesn't want to go. I don't think Mike would agree to it. I'd also like to see Kevin Rooney interviewed like this one of these days, either with or without Tyson.

DAMM MAN I must admit TEDDY made me see that fight and Tyson career as a whole from a completely different angles..and he is right..the thing is when you hear Mike talk about himself about how he truly felt during those fighting days he pretty much low key confirms everything TEDDY been saying there..the facts are undeniable that whenever Mike got tested by someone who could get past his raw talent and hard punch he lost...and he is also right about him choosing to bite instead of low blow hit...the world did give him a pass for that and almost forgot he lost the fight. Because him acting so recklessly did fit his public persona and the narrative..GOT DAMM TEDDY..THATS WAS SOME DEEP SH***T

With Kevin rooney in his corner he didn't EVER have a cut, a bloody nose, bleeding in general no lumps bumps scars or bruises no matter who the opponent was they barely touched him
He fought lewis and was going bald overweight had tattoos wasn't training switched trainers to guys who added nothing to his game and was in his 30s a long way from the 19 year old kid that would've killed them

Naw, I gave Tyson a pass for the bite because Holyfield was headbutting him throughout the fight. Headbutts aren't legal, but he wasn't getting called for them. Holyfield didn't win those fights fair and square. I can accept an L. I don't cry over legitimate losses... but when you break the rules, I gotta say something.

Teddy is almost bang on, but nobody ever mentions the wars he had with Ruddock, two fights that showed that Tyson could be that "man." Plus nobody ever mentions to Teddy how Tyson went out on his shield against Douglas, he was beat half to death FFS.
Ruddock is the fight that Tyson showed me something as far as banging with someone who didn't fear him. Those were wars.

@@pheo1418The Lewis fight was different though. Yes, he didn't quit, but he stopped trying to win. It was like a self imposed punishment born from self loathing at that point. Was very sad to watch. But then "he folded everytime someone stood up to him" idea is BS, as he almost won vs. Buster only bc he kept fighting and had enough heart to land that punch. Same for Ruddock, he walked through fire and refused to lose. He was also a victim of his own brilliance I think...to Teddy's point about how he easily steamrolled through so many fighters via talent alone... character is not just inherent, it is built, and Mike wasn't able to build it in the ring through certain fights that helped bc he won them so easily. But he never would have what Holyfield had, and very few fighters in the history of the sport did. Holyfield was the Terminator and it came from his Mama and his unfailing belief in Christ.

Tyson’s whole fighting style changed later in his career..limited head movement. He would stand in right front of his opponent. Watch early Mike. His head movement was impeccable. Always slipping punches instead of just using blocking as a defense. Tyson in his prime is an all time great. Bottom line

Mike got his ass kicked. Holyfield beat him to the spot all night, Tyson had no answers, in either fight.
I've seen this happen three times in boxing, let's call it the "Power Puncher's Dilemma." The first time was in the 5th Round in the Rumble in the Jungle. Foreman was wailing on Ali, who was sitting on the ropes. After the last blast from Foreman, Ali looked at him and said, "Is that all you got, George?" George paused, then disappeared from the ring after that. The second time was - think it was the first Holyfield/Tyson fight, but it was Round 7. Tyson stiffened Evander with his classic power left to the body followed by a right uppercut. Holyfield backed up. Then they changed camera angles so we were behind Tyson's back and we saw Holyfield brush off those punches and coming back towards camera saying, "Let's go." That's when that fight was over. The third time was when Deontay Wilder knocked down Tyson Fury. Wilder thought he won the fight, but Fury got up. You could see Deontay thinking, "This guy is tougher than I am, and I may never beat him."

Atlas is talking core facts. When everything you rely on cannot get it done can you keep going to death. Tysons image was what he relied on. Evander the real deal Holyfield relied on his heart and would die to win.

I'd also like to add,Buster beating Tyson was no fluke,Buster was just determined to beat Mike-PERIOD. Tyson got knocked out by a journey boxer who lived to beat him and he did.
He is hating, because everything he said can also be said about Holyfield. Why does he give Holyfield a pass for headbutting? Okay, the refs didn't call it, but that was still his "golden parachute" or his "gun" that he snuck into the ring in order to neutralize Tyson, because he was scared. I don't care what Holyfield says.. he was SCARED of Tyson... That's why he kept headbutting him.. and he did the same thing to Riddick Bowe when they fought and Riddick was getting the best of him. So Teddy needs to call it square on both sides. But I guess since the refs let it go, it didn't happen, right?

I've heard Teddy explain this whole prediction and bite story a million times, bur this one was the best in how he so brilliantly depicts Mike's psychology going into that 2nd fight. And Holyfield, complete opposite...will never forget him smiling, dancing, and walking out to, "When the Spirit of The Lord Falls Upon my Heart, I will Dance, like David Danced"

It’s amazing how Teddy can psychologically breakdown somebody in and out of the ring. Especially a person like Tyson. Teddy knew him like a book…Even if Teddy was not accurate in his analysis of this, this is still astonishing to say the least! Makes you wonder….🤔

It's not surprising at all if you know body language... alot of us knew Tyson might have been the best boxer in the world but he didn't have heart... now I'm not gonna say I would have predicted him to have did what he did and I couldn't have predicted who would have won the fight even... but Tyson had the typical bully mentality, punch him in the mouth and they crumble... anytime Tyson got in a dog fight he'd crumble... and ANYONE who followed boxing knew he was too scared to fight Bowe, just look at his old interview...
I agree. Tyson had the same flaw that Zab Judah had...fast and hard puncher but not very tough mentally which is why he could be very discourageable in tough fights and had a tendency to fade away in the late rounds against tough, competitive opponents.
I don’t want to pile up on my man Mike Tyson. I really admire the cat..but for some reason Holyfield is the puncher when they fight. I don’t know what it is about Tyson’s punches but they don’t affect Holyfield the way Lewis’s or Bowe’s did. I don’t know if it was the angle of the punches or that Holyfield just had Tyson’s punch cadence down. But Holyfield was always doing more damage to Tyson than Tyson was to him. That’s huge.
And for the record they fought in 1996 while Tyson was not at his peak anymore....but.... Holyfield wasn’t either. Holyfield is 4 years older than Tyson and he had just been kod by Riddick Bowe the year before he fought Tyson. In fact after the Tyson series and Holyfield’s win over Michael Moorer the next year, he dropped off also and never had another GREAT win. So it’s not like when they fought Holyfield was so much fresher. Holyfield just had his number.
its hard to disagree with most of what youve said mate but the only part i do is tyson not being tough mentally. I feel that tyson in the douglas and holyfield 1 fights that even though he was outclassed in almost the whole of both, he never stopped comin forward against douglas and technically did knock douglas out as he was down for 13 seconds.(not being an excuse for him losing as tysons 10 count was also 12 seconds) I thought he showed tremendous guts by coming out for the 11th v holyfield after the onslaught he suffered in r10
With all due respect , you make good points , but watch The Tyson of mid-late 80s , and the Tyson that fought Holyfield in later Years. His Movement is sluggish. There is no side stepping or his famous Pivot and Punch . Tyson just wasn't the same fighter . He Matured fast , and dwindled the same way.

@@Row1and I never said Tyson was a quitter, I said he fades away in the late rounds because he would get discouraged in fights he couldn't control against opponents that didn't fear him. The first few rounds Tyson was like a bull dog, but when he realizes that his opponent wasn't going anywhere and keeps coming back, Tyson isn't the same fighter he was in the first half of the fight.
Tyson who is a short, pressure fighter, ALLOWED himself to be tied up more than any other fighter of his caliber I have ever seen. Think about that. Even before the Douglas loss. Tony Tucker, Bonecrusher Smith, Jose Ribalta, James Tillis, Jesse Ferguson all tied Tyson up, rather easily. At the time it did not alarm anybody but it was very relevant. Holyfield was able to “walk” Tyson around the ring at will in both fights, in clinches.
Ask yourself, why Tyson wouldn’t work more out of clinches.
He had no confidence in his stamina. It takes energy to do that. Tyson also lost “form” after 4 rounds of every fight he was ever in. The clinches became more apparent and prolonged. His feet became squared. His head movement stopped and he started throwing one bomb at a time. Go to each of his prime fights and look at the 1st two rounds. Then fast forward to round 5 and you see a huge difference in Tyson.

I remember when Teddy predicted this before the fight and everyone played Teddy as if he was being petty and when he was proven right he was on every news coverage about this fight and ended up getting some broadcasting gigs from it.

As as before that fight happened Tyson was not training and was partying like every night and he definitely didn't have Kevin Rooney anymore who was probably his best trainer after Cus died, so all those variables matter as far as him taking that loss to Buster Douglas

Mike Tyson lost all his biggest fights. Most casuals think they only fought once & dont remember the vicious beating Holyfield gave Tyson. Tyson was a GOOD heavyweight, he was never GREAT. Even in his prime he never fought anyone else who was in their absolute best.

I buy Atlas' analysis of Tyson. As ferocious as he was, he never seemed genuinely secure and self-assured. With that said, tho, Iron Mike was FAR MORE fascinating than ANY fighter during his time 💯💯 Holyfield, Lewis, etc...they were solid fighters, but they weren't the least bit intriguing.
Teddy on Joe Rogan podcast is deep AF too. When he starts off by saying Tyson as a little kid would hide between walls of sheetrock to hide from bullies then its 20 minutes of deep insight to Tyson's persona...Rogan lets him talk uninterrupted for 20 minutes about Tyson's fears and how he mentally hides between the walls when he knows hes losing.

But......I did think he would take the loss on his shield.....the fouling out via biting shocked me. I expected more of the Mike we saw lose to Lewis.......that Mike took his beating like a man and went out on his shield.

Indeed Holyfield said he was gonna KO Mike after the bite, BUT it wasn't Holy that kept the fight going, it was Marc Ratner asking Mills, "you REALLY wanna disqualify him?" And then Mills 2nd guessed himself and said, "Well, lemme check with the doctor" to which Flip Homansky said, "Yeah, he's Ok to fight" which is utter BS, if there wasn't so much money riding on the fight, no way they shoudlve allowed it to contnue, and about 1% of fighters in History wouldve agreed to go back out there, trying to concentrate with a chunk of ear missing, painful as all get out, vs. Iron Mike. That is why Holyfield is the Ultimate Warrior. He could've said forget it and and the commission wouldve probably had to call it a No Contest as no one could ever blame Holy for refusing to continue, point deduction or not.

@@MaccaveliPL Tyson often went in head first, and his hooks sometimes turned into elbows, as his hooks were angled a bit inwards, and he would sometimes try to break his opponents arms or hit after the bell or even hit the referree. It amazes me how people seem to protect this man with their life, as if he was an angel and a victim. As if he is the only one that went through hard times. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Tyson was/is incredible, but his shortcomings were actual shortcomings.

While all of this is spot-on it ignores an important fact: none of this is in-play if Cus is still masterminding Tyson’s preparation. The Tyson we’re talking about was a caricature of the model Cus built and Buster Douglas was first to expose it.

Teddy Atlas was 1000% on the money here. Mike Tyson was an exciting fighter who definitely had some great moments and did become heavyweight champion. But hopefully what Teddy Atlas shared here will allow people to view Tyson in a more realistic light.
How can Tyson be considered an all time great of all greats when he was never able to stand up to the truly great fighters of his era who challenged him?
The Tyson that fought Berbick, Frazier , Spinks , would have beat Holyfield . It would have been a close fight , but that era Tyson would have ben extremely hard to beat . Much better pivoting Movement , of which he stoped doing in later fights . Anyone disagrees , watch the Holyfield Tyson fights. He just stands in front trying to land a bomb. The quick elusive pivot movement was GONE . I think he had just lost the desire for Boxing at that stage .
He never would have beaten Holyfield. Holyfield was never scared of him. Beat him in the Olympic trials and in two professional fight. He had no chance.

The judge cannot start the count until Tyson goes to a neutral corner. Tyson lollygagged and for about two seconds. Once judge confirms he is in corner he starts counting.
When Buster knocked Tyson down, Buster immediately retreated to the proper corner so the judge started the count faster.
By rule, judges start the count at 1, they cannot skip ahead.
By the actual rules of boxing, not Joe Rogan interviews, Tyson did not knock out Buster at all.

I think if Teddy where to sit down and talk with Mike he will see that Mike has become a whole lot more than what Teddy thinks, and it's stems from the teachings that Cus and Teddy instilled in Mike from the beggining. Teddy needs to see that Mike has turned out better than what anybody expected and it stems from core teachings of Cus and Teddy. If Teddy wasn't there Mike would not have become the youngest heavy weight boxer ever. Teddy needs to have a sit down and talk with Mike man to man, Trainor to student, brother to brother so that way they can overcome the Bullshit and start sharing memories and stories they both have of Cusdmato like the way siblings would do when remmanissing about there parents. We know that both of them have great memories of Cus, what better way to keep those memories alive than to share them. I think Cus would want the both of them to make peace with one another, cause if they can't then that would mean Cus has failed them both in teaching them how to grow and be a better human being in life.
