    I’ve been using Obsidian on and off for a few years, but it seemed like a bottomless pit of useless information. For the last couple of months I’ve been implementing your system and IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM! The process of creating the notes and revising them sometimes feels tedious, but this approach lets me actually connect ideas and synthesise them between sources. I’m so grateful for your videos, keep up the good work! ❤

I watched your other video on Obsidian around 6 months ago, and by chance, the thought of using it as source material to better understand Obsidian came into my mind today. Other than the synchronous timing, this second video really helped open my eyes to the power and practical use of the Atomic Note. I'm on my way to writing the first paper of my PhD (I am an experimental physicist researching new laser types for surgery). I haven't fully set up my obsidian vault yet -- I just added some random notes in December -- but your setup video, and this one now, have been very helpful. I kinda regret not doing the notes earlier when I was doing my literature review (well at least I have all the sources in Zotero), but hopefully writing papers and my thesis will be easier with obsidian, as sometimes I struggle with holding all my data and thoughts inside my head. Your videos on creativity and writing are brilliant as well, hope the inspiration from them carries on after the Christmas holidays 😄

    Thank you, Odysseus! :)
    I’ve been a connected notes taker for years. I started with TiddlyWiki and then moved to Obsidian/Markdown.
    The most exciting part about this methodology is the unexpected connections you make across fields. And with that the 'first principles' you discover.
    A nice side-effect is that now you can discuss a topic fluently because you’ve written it down and considered how it relates to your prior knowledge. Instead of parotting what a source said, you can now convey it in your own words, through your own lens.
    Your method as you laid out in the video is not too dissimilar to mine. Which is this minimal, not-reliant-on-the-software approach I've learned to love.
    My vault's size is now about 50mb (plaintext!) covering product management, programming, design, philosophy, and most recently, musicology. It's great.
    ⚠ Readers be warned, once you hit a few hundred notes, it gets SUPER addictive.

    First of all, thank you very much for this video, this is exactly what I had missed on the other video teaching the tool, about how this works on practice.
    Yet I still have 2 questions:
    How does the review process work in this method? It seems that atomic notes get a little abandoned or lost over time, despite the connections, how will I know when I need to review a note? Is this based just on my interest?
    The other question is how do you manage to transform your reference notes into atomic notes on a daily basis? The amount of information to be passed to atomic notes seems a bit overwhelming to me. Does this cost you a lot of time or will it become more natural over time?

(making it easier to find the notes? will it ruin the zettelkasten? or is it better to just have a separate tags/index for the medical stuffs? thank you in advance i hope you see this because this is my biggest obstacle to starting.

    Thank you for these videos, it is super helpful to see what kind of notes you capture especially the ones that are short and simple ideas. Eases the burden in my head that all notes need to be profound and detailed write ups.
    One question I wanted to ask is your view on adding some kind of qualifier comment to my note titles?
    For example one of your notes was "Own loafers" where if I was writing this I would say "Own loafers to have a sophisticated shoe option" or "A stylish man owns loafers".
    I encounter this when I am writing notes about topics I am interested in like minimalism where instead of saying "own books you truly appreciate" I would add the qualifier "Minimalism says..."
    Hope that makes sense, would love to hear your thoughts.

      @odysseas__  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davidmasneri3505 I appreciate it, thanks you.
      Tags are just blank notes (for now). They are all kept in the tag folder to keep them away from the other notes. Whenever you write an atomic note, you link to any relevant tags using the [[ ]] hyperlink function on obsidian, like [[interior design]] for example. I restrict it to about 3 per note just to keep it simple.
      If it's your first time using a tag, you'll have to make it manually, then move it to the tag folder, but from that point, you can link to it again and again without much effort as you create new notes.
      Once you feel as if a topic is getting busy, as in, you have many notes linking to it, you can then convert the tag into an index.
      First, you move it to a separate index folder just for organization's sake. Then, you go inside the blank note (which used to be a tag) and then write down some relevant subheadings. These depend on what you have written, and how you personally see the topic, like a contents page for it. Under each subheading, you use the same link function to link to all the relevant notes.
      With that done, you continually update it as you write more notes under that tag, and it now serves as a useful place to have an overview of the topic.
      I hope that helps.

      It doesn't have to be a long note-many of mine are much shorter than the ones you see here. I just like to practice my writing and flesh things out more. The main point behind that idea is to not leave out important context that you need to understand the note.

    I discovered your videos yesterday. I’m not any authority to say so but great job presenting things.
    Given how time intensive something like taking notes while consuming can be, do you apply the same level of effort with any material you’re working with? I kind of expect not and that you might have one thing you might be doing focused study on.
    With a really full schedule, decision paralysis kicks in for me if I’d need to apply myself like this. Even a single book would take ages to get through.

    11:47 Really give me a new approach to atomic notes. Sometimes I get confused in how "atomic" a note should be. For example, should I keep it in a note "Shoe Terminology" or split it into smaller ones like "sole", "upper". With your "Wikipedia style" approach, I think now I can have a better view of how "atomic" a note should be.

    Yo , I really like and enjoy ur videos but still for me personally
    i have a question when i listen to these obsidian note taking systems the atomic notes part of it is something that stands out for me ( i am a student , i like to research my own stuff , read books and stuff ) i end up creating a source note but idk where or when i start making the atomic note for me the time allocation or rather when do i start making the atomic note and how much in detail i should go into each of them is the bit of the jarring part

    • @georgedarks
      @georgedarks 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would start making an atomic note when I find something interesting from the source note.
      In terms of how much time or detail, I feel you need to take the pressure off yourself and allow the process to flow freely - as stated in the video, you can always revisit notes and refine/expand them whenever and as much as you want.

    Zettelkasten has folders because the contents had to be physically organized back in the day- which in the digital form of folders in Obsidian is a hinderance to the Maps of Content. Digitally you can use search functions and links. there is no need to distinct tags from indexes, because they will form naturally through the MoC.
    Other than that I love the rest of the video and your guide to mini-essays and atomic notes. this approach to note-taking while reading makes me really excited to pick up new books. im also writing daily now so thanks for that!

    Hey man thank you for the video, super helpful. I adopted your Obsidian system a few weeks ago, and I am really enjoying it. This video is a great supplement to it. I had one more question though, do you still take some notes by hand? I see that you take all your notes in this video in Obsidian. Like you recommended in one of your previous videos, I usually write my first drafts or thoughts about a book by hand because of the learning benefits it gives. But I notice that it feels a bit redundant to make a handwritten note, a source note, and an atomic note about the same topic. Do you still do handwritten notes? If so, do you have some more advice on how to efficiently incorporate them into this system? Thanks again!

    You're the reason I started investing my time into Obsidian (I didn't even knew of note-taking before seeing that popular obsidian video of yours).
    But I kind of hit a brick wall due to so many questions that arose in my mind as I kept writing notes.
    See, here's where I got lost.
    I followed Your advice and read "How to take smart notes" by Sonke Ahrens.
    He advises, that You should take a note with a unique idea and never ever edit it again. If Your views has changed - then You add another note and disclose the reasoning behind the change etc there, which is contradictory to Your approach.
    You also advise that one should elaborate in main-note on what he finds interesting from his source notes which also is not Zettelkasten approach, since You are basically converting something to Your own words twice (I think?).
    For the past month I can't get myself to write since it is not clear to me which approach should I follow
    Your approach sounds more appealing to me and just makes more sense than pure Zettelkasten.
    In the end does it all come down to a decision? Whether I choose your variant of ZK or the other? I suppose You "tweaked" a system to fit Your own needs?
    Also I have a pure technical question and I'm pretty sure You'll know an answer for that as I find You as a reliable source - how do I write a main-note about question that arise? Let's say I have note1 which raises a certain question in my mind. Do i write that question as note2 and answer it inside? Or should I make a note2 ONLY for the question itself and answer it in note3?
    Looking forward for Your answer!

    Do there need to be [[ ]] tags in the source material note and the atomic note?
    Or just in one?

    • @AllisonRoadWest
      @AllisonRoadWest 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Those brackets create links to other note files. Completely optional but it's a quick way to connect ideas or to create an empty page to fill in with ideas later. Alternatively, you can create tags - that link to pages with overarching themes or concepts.
      It seems complicated but it's just a simple way in obsidian to connect ideas and create a second brain and a network of thought.
      After a while when you go back and forth between those connections, they spark new ideas and more connections.
      💡 💕
      And an "atomic" note - That's the building block for a singular concept phrase or idea. It's a distilled version of way you're working on. Simple and easy to explain to yourself and others.

    The editing just leaves me a little confused on what each note looks like, and the process making them. Wish we could get a time lapse of a source not and atomic note. Or, at least, a copy of one of each note.

    • @odysseas__
      @odysseas__  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      15:05 is probably the best place to see the difference. The source note is a (typically) longer collection of notes under some subheadings, and they are your takeaways from the book/video/paper you just went through. On the right is the atomic note, which is usually no longer than 100-600ish words, and that captures one, single, important and relevant idea from anywhere-either the source note, another atomic note, or your own thoughts and views.
      Hope that helps, but let me know if you need a bit more.
