Man, the production quality in Unleashed is still stunning to this day. I can only hope we'll ever get a Sonic game with that kind of polish and attention to detail again.
I cant think of a way to properly articulate how I feel about seeing a new Ajakes video and I worry anything that would approach it would sound hyperbolic, and I can’t have that. You’re THAT guy. You’ve very very quickly become one of my all time favorite sonictubers, and your level analyses are not only such a unique concept for a video, but they’re all incredibly engaging and well made. Thank you very very much, and I hope to see even more in the future!
Sonic Team having fun, making their island paradise absolutely inhospitable (all while having no pretense about hiding the dangerous elements in the Greek architecture, just having free-floating spikes and flamethrowers hanging around) is giving me the same vibes as those incredibly challenging Mario Maker levels where incredibly precise movement is necessary to be one of the 0.1% who beats it. The "wouldn't we be a stinker if we put a spike riiiiight here" energy is off the charts, I adore it. It doesn't even feel malicious, it feels like we're all in on the joke together, like they're daring us to figure the pathing out, and I'm here for it. Especially with the random elements just thrown in there; it's their sandbox we're running around in. Their horrible, spike-filled on-fire sandbox. And I for one am glad to be invited in.
(talking about Act 1-2 here) It really is route design that I feel like I SHOULD be criticizing, complaining about the lack of nuance. But knowing how they can dress things up so meticulously in the normal stages, it doesn't feel like an accident. The blatant spike traps and platforms floating in the air, are meant to be spotted in the distance. Not even for some cohesive environmental design or helpful gameplay assist. It can't help but land on satire for me. It's so obvious, the cruelty is just THERE, hanging out in the open. I feel like I'm losing my mind on this level but it's just so funny to me. In a game so devoted to integrating the course into the background, you get a level that hides nothing in trying to hurt you. And where do they put it? On level 1. ALSO I've been saying they should make a Super Sonic Maker for YEARS now CMON SEGA
@Ajakes I mean they already gave us their spin on Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Galaxy - don't get shy on us now, Sega Team! Give the people what we want! SONIC MAKER. Honestly, it wouldn't be a horrible call. Some of my favorite sonic media when i was younger were the fan-made levels on Newgrounds. (But also could you imagine if, amidst all the theorizing going on about "Victoria" and Maria's sister and that trail of breadcrumbs, they didn't give us a new mainline game or Frontiers 2, but instead gave us Super Sonic Maker? Iconic. Devilish. The funniest possible option.)
@@hanahyperfixates It would DEF hold people over I think, and shut them up while they work on the next title lol. I wonder what games you'd source from tho: Sonic 1 / Sonic 3 / Sonic Advance / the Classic Sonic stuff in Generations? Lots of potential. Also one of my fav Sonic games as a kid was Ultimate Flash Sonic because it was the only "free" sonic game I could get on Newgrounds (plus it was always at the top of the page lol)
One thing I really notice with the visuals in unleashed and generations is that unleashed is a complete environment, that looks believable from most if not all angles, but in gens, the illusion is broken the second the camera is turned away from the intended direction, since most levels are only built for looking forward, not behind, most of the background terrain and architecture is only modelled on one side.
Sonic’s sound effects really add to the rhythm game-esque sort of vibe unleashed can have when playing optimally. It’s like a dynamic percussion track that adds this extra level of texture to the already amazing music.
I'm waiting for the infamous Dragon Road loop stage (you know the one). I cannot wait for your Jungle Joyride video! 25 minutes on the first 45 seconds of the stage? I'm all for it \0/
I LOVE all the little tricks you can do to save time in the unleashed stages, they add so much flow to a run. Like at 19:28 if you jump and air boost EXACTLY after you finish sliding under the wall you can land at that little staircase (19:35) and skip that ENTIRE section of the pulley's or homing attacks which saves around 3-5 seconds. Be weary though, because that bomb WILL end you if you don't jump in time lmao. Also you videos are PHENOMENAL. The amount of editing and care you put into these in such a short amount of time is INSANE. I can't wait for what the next vid will be about. ❤
man i ALWAYS forget to do that lol, I think I get way too excited to take the plunge down the slope. People have pointed it out to me before and yet I still go "weee!" right down to the bottom. Also I appreciate the compliment! Excited to get that next vid out to ya! 👍
I honestaly love these videos because they are the few videos of 1 hour that i would wacht at ANY MOMENT. It's entertaining and smart at the same time, a great combination, and that keeps me drawned in and feel more closer to Sonic Unleashed itself (i have Unleashed on my PS3 that's why)
I am a big Sonic Colors DS fan, so hopefully I can do justice what it does per world compared to the Wii version. In the Wii Version, most levels have 6 (or 5, I can't remember) individual Acts numbered 1-6 (or 1-5), and a Boss Act. The levels vary drastically in length and level design quality. In Sonic Colors DS, each area has Act 1, Act 2, a Boss Act, and 3 "mission" Acts, which are timed challenges which take place within parts of Act 1 and Act 2. Acts 1 and 2 are fully fleshed out levels, and I can't remember if the missions are optional or not, but they are marked with a different icon in a way that makes them distinctly "not a main level". They're usually on a 30 second timer where you have to defeat X amount of enemies or collect X number of rings or something, and I think they rearrange placements of certain things like platforming elements, enemies, wisps, etc. I definitely prefer Sonic Colors DS over the Wii version, and this is one of those reasons. The Wii levels aren't marked well enough on the map to know what you're dealing with. Also all the missions have text based cutscenes with Sonic's friends so that's a plus, as most of them aren't in the Wii version (I think Tails might the only one in the Wii version).
@Ajakes They're mission based levels consisting certain sections of the main levels with rearranged elements with a mission to complete (Collect rings, defeat enemies,Beat the level quickly, etc.) They're challenging because they require very quick action just to beat (let alone S rank, which I managed to do.......after who knows how much time). Definitely one of the best handheld Sonic games.
I think act four's Strait four and arena is is a great representation of what Ajakes said in his first level review video (rooftop run for any one who doesn't know) "in Unleashed, the normal route IS the punishment route, and you gotta play well to get the hell out of it" I know it's a dlc level but it really is a great example of what he said.
this might get buried but i really appreciate these videos. every time i’m having a rough day/week/month, seeing these on my feed really turns my entire mood around. so glad to see someone with the same appreciation for these levels with such an engaging style of commentary. you make things make sense :)
Thank you #2 Unleashed fan guy. And plus 1:04 don't fear dude, you make amazing analyses. And sometimes it's important to point out things, however obvious they may be.
Ey, appreciate that dude ❤️ I think when I start to look at the video runtime, I get a bit paranoid that I could've shortened it by summarizing better. But other times I feel like I gotta list out the pieces of the track to build to a point I'm making. It's a weird balance, but my current methods seem to be gelling well with most people thankfully!
noticing how much mileage you are getting out of the sonic splat (8:11) its like the snail on adventure time, waiting every episode just to point at the reacurring thing
i love your analysis videos! im a gamedev making a sonic inspired fast-paced platformer so watching you analyze sonic's level design is very insightful for me! :D
@@Ajakes mainly the adventure games and classic/mania, its practically a 2d adventure game just more focused around special movesets and movement tech. You'd be surprised how insightful even 3d level analysis can be even for 2d games lol xP
32:22 love this lmao and through this whole video just seeing sonics insane tripping animation in this game is so enjoyable Like bro cannot regain balance he is just out of control😭
all his trick animations are so clean that its doubly hilarious when he trips and flails around like a goofy cartoon character. I also recently learned that he has a balance animation on the rails, where he ALSO flails around like an insane person lol
God I can't wait for the Adabat analysis, and subsequently the bonus acts. I have never felt my heartbeat rise more than when I am nearing the end of those levels. Also extremely excited for the Spagonia bonus acts as I adore their variety and experimentation- like WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE RUN ALONG THE BACKGROUND WALL IN ACT 2??
Nothing like a new video from Adam! It's so cool to see someone actually talk about these challenge stages! Also, you were on your way already to be one of my favorite TH-camrs but the TF2 reference at 17:12 just boosted (heh) you all the way to the top! 💖
I was literally just rewatching your speed highway video, what are the chances?! Also please do a chaos island comparison I think it would interesting to compare an open zone to a level.
fantastic as always! felt the "just one more retry" bit with the last level LOOL. i also really want to be here all week with the jungle joyride lane switches, can't wait for the day you end up covering those stages
I would like to see more DLC like this in future Sonic games. These levels are excellent examples of asset reuse without it feeling obvious or tacked-on.
gonna be honest, I haven't even played this version of Unleashed. I had it on the Wii as a kid and even that version I never got very far in. Despite this, I love these videos so much, your sense of humor is SO good, I only wish I could give thoughts on the stages in the comments lol.
Oopsie, got here late this time but we made it! Again there's not much to yap about from me, everything was straightforward and laid out in a funny yet digestible way. I like how these levels take full advantage of being y'know, a game instead of trying to blend game elements and level aesthetics. Of course, I love the main stages for that but you can tell the game designers have some real fun having more loose restrictions. Happy this video came out when it did cause I got to meet mister sonic himself, Jason Griffith just a few days ago! So these Unleashed videos are just a lil extra special to me now XD Great video as always!
Even when they're just floating bricks and spikeballs in midair, they still manage to make it look beautiful lol. Also I'm starting to realize Unleashed is my favorite Griffith performance, I feel like he sounds the coolest / most in tune with himself here. Plus IDK why but I really like his Werehog performance as well, I almost wish he had more dialog and cutscenes rofl. How did meeting him go?
@Ajakes I know right? The only game I'd say he's slightly better in is black knight but honestly anyone could argue in either game's favor and I'd agree. As for the meeting, it's pretty short for how long me and my friends waited. Because it was a free event, the line wait was quite literally two hours long (oh yeah, the og voice of Silver was there too and he looked like he was having a great time LOL) I also didn't have the funds to do anything besides speak bc a picture ALONE was like 40 dollars. Anyway, he gave me a fist bump at the end of our little chat which was nice and we got the heck out of there. I'm not too disappointed bc I'll be seeing him again in a few months at a convention anyway 🙏
@@theshadyinfidel I've always heard Black Knight was the best characterization for Sonic, so I gotta see for myself! Also damn, that sounds a bit draining haha. I always forget Sonic isn't a niche thing anymore, a LOT of people like this stuff, no wonder the line was 2 hours long. Pete Capella always seemed like a dope dude tho! Would stand in line for that guy
@@Ajakes Sorry for the late reply but yeah, I'd say Black Knight is up there with some of the best dialogue/writing in the series! It was, especially because the building wasn't even that big LOL- plus I was stuck in my Rouge cosplay and I was def ready to take it off after that long ass wait And from what I saw, he really was! I would have too but the line was already so long so I stuck with Jason lol
Here for it as promised! As usual everything is top notch and I love the analysis with the hard mode breaking your habits and countering your reflexes! Ooh going back to shadow gens hyped for that the levels in this game are flat out some of the best ever!! Cheers and see ya for the next one😊
Act 4 is the ultimate reflex test, S rank that, and you can take on the rest of the game lol. Thanks for coming by and watching the vid! VERY excited for this next Shad Gens comparison (as I've been saying... heavily requested...)
It's not just you who found Act 1 surprisingly hard to S Rank, I spent a good like 30 minutes on that level just trying to get that S Rank, it took longer than Act 2 did for me, which is wild
lol same, got Act 2 before Act 1. I had to practice getting all those rings. Like I said, it's neat how it's more of a test on your BOOSTing prowess, rather than just going fast through the level.
Loving all these videos so much, especially after getting into the boost games like this month. Unleashed has the speed that is unparalleled in other Sonic games and the beautiful worlds are so unique I’m glad I get someone to show me all the stuff I missed during my playthrough
Eyyy! Glad to see the power cut outs didn't hold you back! These bonus stages look sick af, I'm really glad to see the lane switching pushed to it's limits more as it always feels like it's holding back on it's twitch-y reaction time potential you know? Also, showing off sick-ass Sonic speedruns is unironically, in fact, my kind of party lmao
Rofl, promise you won't leave the couch for just 1 more retry? I ALMOST GOT IT!! Act 4 is such a fav of mine, I love lane switching in general, but getting SUCH a tough level built around it is like a dream come true (also srsly thank god I got power back fast, thankfully was able to keep to the "1 week" deadline 😤)
Great video as always man, since i saw your Rooftop run video you become one of my favorite youtubers to talk about Sonic levels And Sonic Unleashed That is my fav game ever. Keep making great content!
something worth to note about those DLC stages is that a good chunk of them are based on parts of levels that they just didn't had the time to put in the base game, a lot of werehog dlc levels has obvious clues about that, arid sands ends on the main coliseum where the boss takes place, jungle joyride starts after that door we open up in the main stage and the list just goes on, another thing to note is that those levels have so many more lives scattered around and they are well hidden, they seem to be emulating where the sun and moon medals would be placed if they could hypothetically put them on those levels. also, excited for jungle joyride 1-2, its my favorite one! that level was really like "damn the level is already hard enough on the base game so lets just make it easier and see how much cool camera shots we can do with this level all at once and make new setpieces with that"
I recall people mentioning how the DLC was used from leftover areas, specifically that Jungle Joyride one. Originally they had you continue through that door at the end, yeah? I'm excited to get the Jungle Joyride 1-2 as well, I think it's my favorite of all the hard mode variants, because they go CRAZY with the spectacle on that one. The ending with the waterfall is just.. UGH, so damn good
Real quick I want to add some comparison thoughts on 5:13 and 11:41 These two parts of Windmill Isle are some of my favorites because it reminds me a lot of Sonic 06. In a sense that they really learned from 06's mistakes in terms of the little things, but still took inspiration of the level design from 06. Specifically the hordes of enemies you fought in places like Kingdom Valley and Crisis City I'd like to compare Windmill Isle's "enemy horde" to 06's Flame Core (with Sonic & Shadow specifically). Flame Core in 06 had an "arena-like" area where you had to beat all the enemies to move on, and the same happens with Windmill Isle. But of course, 06's camera is janky, it's following Sonic and lessso the area you're in. Whereas Unleashed sort of has the camera set on one specific spot that orbits around Sonic (especially in the case of 1-2). And I like that sort of gameplay when it comes to areas like that. Yes, you're mashing the homing attack button, but you're eyes are trying to focus on what's your next target. And P-06 does something similar with 1-2 with said enemy hordes. (I know as of now Ajakes hasn't played it yet) The camera is sort of fixed at a certain spot and while you can still control it, it zooms out specifically for the horde of enemies, which feels like it was inspired from Unleashed in some ways. It really takes comparing gameplay of both Flame Core and Windmill Isle's specific moments like this to see the similarities, but the point being is that Unleashed has moments that feel like those 06 moments where you fought enemies, except the speed is amplified, and you don't have to wait for a door to open. And P-06 helps justify that similarity in speed and having a better camera.
I'll also add that the ability to home off camera is another huge step forward. You can speed into an arena, tag the enemy placements in your brain, and work front to BACK because you already know the space. Couple that with the 1 hit kills, suddenly "combat arenas" go by in a flash.
I went and replayed the unleased day levels because of this series, and I didn't realize how amazing arid sands was in making you feel fast, I'd love to see that stage covered more in depth! I'd also really like to see cool edge too, I love the aesthetic and music of the icy arctic :D
Yooo another video before sleep!!!! I love to see jungle joyride or wave ocean cause i love the beach stage and want to see you analysis. Anyway great video Ajakes 💙💙💙
I absolutely adore your style of stage analysis, they give me such a better view on how to take these stages and a much greater appreciation for every little detail. The amount of effort is also nuts, I usually keep these kinda videos in the background while I do something else, but it draws my attention so much. I would absolutely love to see you tackle stage analysis for games like Sonic Forces or Sonic Frontiers' Cyberspace stages, since a lot of people see those levels as vastly inferior to Generations and Unleashed. I think Frontiers' Cyberspace could be especially interesting since a lot of that level design is ripped from other games, so it could be neat to do a much more direct comparison and what makes Frontiers feel different, if at all. Great stuff, keep it up!
I enjoy your videos so much man, every time you drop a new video I get super excited, it’s crazy cool how great your attention to detail is, I love it!
i have no idea who you are but holy MOLY you are actually so awesome lol you're not only funny but informative and just entertaining in general, ive never played the sonic unleashed dlc for some reason but now i just have to after seeing this!
Yooo thanks! 😊 I encourage you to give those levels a shot! Apotos is just the tip of the iceberg, Adabat and Spagonia have some FANTASTIC DLC stages as well.
I don't know why but I absolutely love the irony of what they did with the first act, not only do they flip it in reverse but make you go back as well, and that to me is absolutely hilarious if not evil for them to do, granted they were supposed to make it harder so it's only fair- I also love this bonus video in general, it's a really interesting and really nice swap of how we go from analyzing levels down to a environment level and more of a gameplay level, and it's a interesting and very much enjoyed twist, and should you decide to do more of these in the future I can't wait to see how they are analyzed and looked upon!!
Thanks! Yeah I loved the format too, I can see it being used for a lot of different Sonic games which hold shorter levels that come from a similar "zone" (like Gens Challenge gates) or even like a quick run through of Hard Mode variants on SA2
Well now this was a TREAT! I expected an Act 1 analysis, but even the DLC levels?! Awesome! I recently S ranked all of the Windmill Isle dlc, and felt so satisfied once I finally conquered 1-4. I can't wait to see what you have to say about all these levels!! Thank you for another release so soon! 🙌🙌
WOOOOOOO!!! More Unleashed! I legit can’t wait for you to talk about Jungle joyrides dlc stages however I will say I wish that you went into a bit more depth with the intention of some stuff like at the point in 1-2, 11:28 when sonic flies to the top of the hill I hoped you would mention the trail of rings prompting you to stomp to shoot off the dash pads, it skips the checkpoint but also makes you shoot off if you’re looking for a faster time. It’s an alteration that exists for the speedrunners and incorporates risk and reward as if you die after this point you get sent to the checkpoint before this one making you have to start over. I love that thoughtful level design in this game! Like you mention, you see that stuff all around these levels but I suppose with all the stages you have to talk about, there’s not much time but I just thought this particular part was kinda important. Nonetheless Love the videos, can’t wait for more!
Honestly missed that, my bad. I always forget to use midair stomps for a benefit, rather than a safety maneuver. I like the way you explained it though! It's like dangling some keys in front of the speedrunners lol.
THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANK your videos are so so so amazing and bring me so much happiness i literally grew up with unleashed and i know every level inside out (i quite literally got to holoska BLINDFOLDED not to brag) and you are like the best unleashed tuber currently PLEASE do more dlcs in the future maybe in future videos you could note in the main level analysis if something changes majorly from the original act in the dlcs? i love your videos sm THANK YOUUU
BLINDFOLDED? You're gonna have to explain that one to me, how did you even manage that? Also, I'd love to do more Bonus acts! Which nation do you wanna see the bonus acts from the most?
@ OKAY SO FUNNY STORY me and my friend did this sleep over challenge (we both love unleashed) to see how far we could get in the games level in chronological order (so no plane missions or hub worlds) and he only got up to like spagonia night before giving up and looking 😭😭 so basically we had like an hour to prepare and refresh the level in our mind i guess i just have a super good memory lmao😭😭 AND TO ANSWER YOYR QUESTION i would really really like to analyse spagonias night dlcs (as i find especially night act 2 to be very creative and challenging) OR holoskas day dlcs!!! thank youuu :3
Great video. When I heard last week you were planning a bonus video I was curious to see how it would differ from the typical videos, and going through every bonus stage sequentially is a good way to do it. Will there be bonus videos for, say, 06 Very Hard Mode or Generations challenges, or just the Unleashed bonus acts? My well-supported theory (not at all wishful thinking) is that the Shadow Gens stage is Space Colony ARK.
Yes to all of those! I think I'll structure those the same way I did with this vid. Aka for hard modes, I'll give the levels their own individual vids first, and then do a Hard Mode comp where I briefly go over each one. Generations Challenges we'll tackle the 10 gates per zone on a vid. (like Speed Highway BONUS Gates or something)
Dude I can't get enough of your videos. Every video is getting better and better. Keep it up. I'm still waiting for "Cool Edge" But take your time on making your awesome videos as usual and don't rush yourself. I love your videos. 😊🧡🦊
The rate that these videos come out are crazy and I go crazy for them everytime cuz I am not normal about this game (or sonic in general) and I love to hear all the things pointed out Also i’m pretty sure that all the dlc levels look a little better because they utilize the high quality GI maps, which would’ve taken a second disc for the base game. It should be most easily visible with the shadows
Great vid as always! Act 4 is also one of my favorite stages to revisit, it's short and sweet which makes grinding for a fulfilling PB not feel too cumbersome. 32:58 too bad! Your last video already made me revisit the game and try to get a sub 4 on Jungle Joyride act 1. For both WI act 4 and JJ act 1's opening section, its sooo much fun to QSS your way through, despite the stages not being designed around it (its a glitch, duh), I urge you to give it a shot if you haven't already (hold B while quick stepping). I also love how you do have the chance to save yourself in JJ act 1 should you fall off the platforms, it's so well designed for a short 15s section
I've never attempted it, but I've been curious to give it a shot because I love messing around in the lanes lol. Perhaps its time to give the ol' "Big Blue" archives a watch...
Super excited for more bonus act analysis. There's an Empire City bonus stage (Act 3 maybe?) that's basically a miniboss rush that I remember having some really cool camera angles and wide shots. And of course the absolute insanity of Jungle Joyride 1-2 and the Rooftop Run bonus stage (Act 2??) that got remade in Frontiers
Once ajakes said the next video was gonna come in a week, i didn't let anything else interrupt. i stared at my devices refreshing until i saw a notification. Worthwhile for ajakes
Oh right especially act 2! I don't know why but when they change sunset ambience into rainy, it was a jaw-dropping moment for me and i instantly cried how much justice they did with Sunset Heights 🥹
I actually feel validated every time someone says "mischievious" (12:38) because I pronounced it that way for years. Although, looking it up now, it looks like this "nonstandard" pronunciation and spelling dates back to the 16th century. And if I'm being honest, "MISchief-us" just doesn't convey the playful tone like 'misCHEEveeus" does. So maybe the "nonstandard" way is just BETTER.
However, "coup de gra" (23:45) is unacceptable. 😛 The "coo" is fine, and yes, I know French has a lot of silent letters, but a rule of thumb is, consonants aren't silent if they're followed by a vowel. So grâce is pronounced "grahss". As a French speaker and DnD player, I hear it a lot, so it's a pet peeve. Especially since the mispronunciation also changes the meaning, from "finishing touch" to something like "greasy strike". So...yeah. Coo-duh-GRAHSS. Pleeeeease.
Rofl, why would you validate me and then IMMEDIATELY undercut me man CMON NOW! Jk jk, I legit do appreciate it. Saves me from fucking up in the future, I really should've checked "Apotos" before I voiced this video lol, had to throw in that little disclaimer at the start because I was like "fuuuuck why did I say Apotos so many goddamn times in this"
I love the idea of supplemental episodes for bonus acts like this! And just as high quality as your regular videos? Sign me up. With the difficulty of these, you've got me wondering: will you do something similar for the Hard Mode layouts in SA2 (or other games that have them)?
I was actually thinking about it! Probably plan it out in a similar way. This "collection" format I think can be used for a lot of things in the future (Challenge Gates from Gens / Hard Modes in SA2 / Cyberspace levels per Island)
WOOO! (I am Sonic, boosting directly into watching this video)

Act 1-2 is a great showcase of this, considering you bounce all around the island
Imo, both games have good visuals
Sonic’s sound effects really add to the rhythm game-esque sort of vibe unleashed can have when playing optimally. It’s like a dynamic percussion track that adds this extra level of texture to the already amazing music.
The Sound Effects of Unleashed is a video idea I've had floating around in the back of my mind for a while. There's so much you could say about it
I'm waiting for the infamous Dragon Road loop stage (you know the one).
I cannot wait for your Jungle Joyride video! 25 minutes on the first 45 seconds of the stage? I'm all for it \0/
You KNOW I'm cutting up those docks into 2 setpieces and just going OFF
I hope you're not burning yourself out. Love your work!
Very thoughtful, I appreciate that! ❤️
0:36 I am one of those freaks 😈 Unleashed DLC levels are peak tho
knew you guys would SHOW UP
Was not expecting this to come out so soon after the original Windmill Isle video
Sameeeeee
idk what exactly to say about them
but getting an S rank in 2-2 was really fun and not too difficult
well well well, look at the GAMER GOD (2-2 is pretty easy)
I honestaly love these videos because they are the few videos of 1 hour that i would wacht at ANY MOMENT. It's entertaining and smart at the same time, a great combination, and that keeps me drawned in and feel more closer to Sonic Unleashed itself (i have Unleashed on my PS3 that's why)
These videos tend to go long, so I'm glad they're able to keep up the pace! 👍 Appreciate it!
I love the challenge levels from Sonic Colours DS. So these DLC levels existing makes me happy
Are the challenge levels like hard modes of the normal levels?
@Ajakes
They're mission based levels consisting certain sections of the main levels with rearranged elements with a mission to complete (Collect rings, defeat enemies,Beat the level quickly, etc.) They're challenging because they require very quick action just to beat (let alone S rank, which I managed to do.......after who knows how much time). Definitely one of the best handheld Sonic games.
4:44 this is one my main problem with games like Frontiers and Shadow Gens, not being able to home on enemies you can't see is a detriment imo
Yeah, there were a lot of moments in Shad Gens where I knew I could continue a combo if they just let me target off screen.
I think act four's Strait four and arena is is a great representation of what Ajakes said in his first level review video (rooftop run for any one who doesn't know) "in Unleashed, the normal route IS the punishment route, and you gotta play well to get the hell out of it" I know it's a dlc level but it really is a great example of what he said.
this might get buried but i really appreciate these videos. every time i’m having a rough day/week/month, seeing these on my feed really turns my entire mood around. so glad to see someone with the same appreciation for these levels with such an engaging style of commentary. you make things make sense :)
eyy, no problem dude :) happy to keep the mood up
Thank you #2 Unleashed fan guy.
STOP EVERYTHING! Ajakes just posted a new level analysis!

A last, a video that appreciates the how challenging, yet fun, the DLC stages of Unleashed

i love your analysis videos! im a gamedev making a sonic inspired fast-paced platformer so watching you analyze sonic's level design is very insightful for me! :D
Eyy good luck with that! Are you basing it off a specific Sonic game in particular? (maybe Unleashed?)

@@Ajakes you know ball🥲
32:22 love this lmao and through this whole video just seeing sonics insane tripping animation in this game is so enjoyable
Like bro cannot regain balance he is just out of control😭
all his trick animations are so clean that its doubly hilarious when he trips and flails around like a goofy cartoon character. I also recently learned that he has a balance animation on the rails, where he ALSO flails around like an insane person lol
@ omg that’s right I forgot he does the cartoon windmill arms and everything
So much personality in this game love to see it🙂↕️
God I can't wait for the Adabat analysis, and subsequently the bonus acts.
Dude, I had that same jawdrop in Jungle Joyride's hard mode. When they fire you ONTO the waterfall I was like, "there's NO WAY- WHAT!"
Your channel is so amazing your videos are extremely high quality and sometimes they even make me crack up you deserve more subs
Nothing like a new video from Adam!
It's so cool to see someone actually talk about these challenge stages!
Also, you were on your way already to be one of my favorite TH-camrs but the TF2 reference at 17:12 just boosted (heh) you all the way to the top! 💖
you are NOT allowed to ask me my TF2 hours, by any means. Not even to find out if it's in the 4 digits or not. (thanks for the watch! 😊)
Don't worry, mine is in the 4 digits too x3
I was literally just rewatching your speed highway video, what are the chances?! Also please do a chaos island comparison I think it would interesting to compare an open zone to a level.
Chaos Island is on the docket, have no fear! 👍 (also thanks for showing up so early lol)

I don't comment super often but you have no idea how much I'm loving this series on my favorite game of all time.
I love these videos, keep it up my guy! :)
Thanks man! :)
fantastic as always! felt the "just one more retry" bit with the last level LOOL. i also really want to be here all week with the jungle joyride lane switches, can't wait for the day you end up covering those stages

I would like to see more DLC like this in future Sonic games. These levels are excellent examples of asset reuse without it feeling obvious or tacked-on.
Shadow Gens is such a great opportunity, I really hope they jump on that
gonna be honest, I haven't even played this version of Unleashed. I had it on the Wii as a kid and even that version I never got very far in. Despite this, I love these videos so much, your sense of humor is SO good, I only wish I could give thoughts on the stages in the comments lol.
Haha no worries, I appreciate you watching regardless! 👍👍
So these Unleashed videos are just a lil extra special to me now XD
Great video as always!
Because it was a free event, the line wait was quite literally two hours long (oh yeah, the og voice of Silver was there too and he looked like he was having a great time LOL)
I also didn't have the funds to do anything besides speak bc a picture ALONE was like 40 dollars.
It was, especially because the building wasn't even that big LOL- plus I was stuck in my Rouge cosplay and I was def ready to take it off after that long ass wait
And from what I saw, he really was!
I recently bought the spagonia and Apotos Dlc for unleashed. I feel like Windmill Isle Act 1-2 is slowly becoming one of my favourite unleashed levels
I think it's one of the meanest, but in that way, also the funniest lol
Loving all these videos so much, especially after getting into the boost games like this month. Unleashed has the speed that is unparalleled in other Sonic games and the beautiful worlds are so unique I’m glad I get someone to show me all the stuff I missed during my playthrough
ey, perfect timing! Have you been trying the other boost games too?

When I'm at the lane switching enthusiast competition and my opponent is Ajakes:
keh... try and keep up... KID (incinerates myself in .2 seconds)
something worth to note about those DLC stages is that a good chunk of them are based on parts of levels that they just didn't had the time to put in the base game, a lot of werehog dlc levels has obvious clues about that, arid sands ends on the main coliseum where the boss takes place, jungle joyride starts after that door we open up in the main stage and the list just goes on, another thing to note is that those levels have so many more lives scattered around and they are well hidden, they seem to be emulating where the sun and moon medals would be placed if they could hypothetically put them on those levels.
also, excited for jungle joyride 1-2, its my favorite one! that level was really like "damn the level is already hard enough on the base game so lets just make it easier and see how much cool camera shots we can do with this level all at once and make new setpieces with that"
I recall people mentioning how the DLC was used from leftover areas, specifically that Jungle Joyride one. Originally they had you continue through that door at the end, yeah? I'm excited to get the Jungle Joyride 1-2 as well, I think it's my favorite of all the hard mode variants, because they go CRAZY with the spectacle on that one. The ending with the waterfall is just.. UGH, so damn good

this one's for you 🎁
i love the way you analyze the music in the levels, you really show how much time and effort was put in the levels !
Real quick I want to add some comparison thoughts on 5:13 and 11:41
These two parts of Windmill Isle are some of my favorites because it reminds me a lot of Sonic 06. In a sense that they really learned from 06's mistakes in terms of the little things, but still took inspiration of the level design from 06. Specifically the hordes of enemies you fought in places like Kingdom Valley and Crisis City
I'd like to compare Windmill Isle's "enemy horde" to 06's Flame Core (with Sonic & Shadow specifically).
I'd also really like to see cool edge too, I love the aesthetic and music of the icy arctic :D
those are on the docket!
Yooo another video before sleep!!!! I love to see jungle joyride or wave ocean cause i love the beach stage and want to see you analysis.
Anyway great video Ajakes 💙💙💙
2 great suggestions, thank you! 💙
Eyy, thank you for that! 👍👍 Frontiers and Forces is something I really wanna crack into this year, Forces might come sooner than later..

Yooo thanks! 😊 I encourage you to give those levels a shot! Apotos is just the tip of the iceberg, Adabat and Spagonia have some FANTASTIC DLC stages as well.
Keep up the good work!
Will do! 👍👍👍
I don't know why but I absolutely love the irony of what they did with the first act, not only do they flip it in reverse but make you go back as well, and that to me is absolutely hilarious if not evil for them to do, granted they were supposed to make it harder so it's only fair-
I also love this bonus video in general, it's a really interesting and really nice swap of how we go from analyzing levels down to a environment level and more of a gameplay level, and it's a interesting and very much enjoyed twist, and should you decide to do more of these in the future I can't wait to see how they are analyzed and looked upon!!
Congrats on the S ranks! Apotos took me a while. 1-4 tho, ho man, a tough S rank but I LOVED every second of it (I think it was my last S in Apotos)

@@asteriartful Seriously, my 2 worst spots were the enemy pit on Strait 4 and the final part on Strait 6. Many retries were made there

The rate that these videos come out are crazy and I go crazy for them everytime cuz I am not normal about this game (or sonic in general) and I love to hear all the things pointed out
Also i’m pretty sure that all the dlc levels look a little better because they utilize the high quality GI maps, which would’ve taken a second disc for the base game. It should be most easily visible with the shadows
Oh shit really? I gotta go back and check, I had no clue about that! (also tyvm 🙏)

Saves me from fucking up in the future, I really should've checked "Apotos" before I voiced this video lol, had to throw in that little disclaimer at the start because I was like "fuuuuck why did I say Apotos so many goddamn times in this"
@ Haha, sorry, I calls them as I sees them! But hey, I wouldn't comment at all if I weren't enjoying the video a ton. Keep it up!
@@didiercollard Haha, nah, I respect it 🤝 Always appreciate the comments dude!
10:50 this section really feels like it was cut straight out of Sonic Colors' filler stages (Acts 3~6), except it's challenging in Unleashed
LESSSSSS GOOOOOOOOOOO 🗣🗣🔥
this is gonna be peak (as always)
HELL YEAAAHHH 🔥🔥🔥
Hey, I know you might be saving these levels for last, but I would love to see an Arid Sands Day or a Jungle Joyride video.
i love how nearly all of the bombs are legit impossible to see for like 80% of their presence
