Just met you in a tough part of my life. Dealing with studies, work, house payments, now moving again... Man, you're giving me a way, strength, cause out of all the designers I've watched before, you are the best explaining, guiding, helping, aproaching negative aspects... That's amazing man, I love your work and how you show up to us (I don't know if it's correct that verb 🙄). Keep on going with it, simply amazing!
I have been following you for over 8 years. You do great work but from my perspective at least, you are my favorite artist because you are such a great instructor. Thanks for all the great material.
Thank you very much for this, All of your video's have meant a lot to me, I hope you will continue uploading some older ones like these, you can really see how you've changed.
These are really cool looking, I espiecally like the fighter you chose to do. Also, these videos are really helpful and I just wanted to thank you for making them. I've seen a lot of improvement in myself from just listening to what you have to say and your advice really works for me, so thanks :)
I'm unsure at what point the audio mismatched the video you were describing but I knew that when you described something, that I would see it in 5 seconds haha. Great video.
Master Feng Zhu, it would be really interesting to hear from you about what stuff big customers want, you went into it in this video, but I'm curious for more. You said that for example that a customer wanted a design to be "popular with the boys, and maybe 10% of the girls". Is that a number taken just from thin air, or is it typical for customers? Are most video game clients more concerned with boys? Has there been a change in trends? Have big companies recognized the need to sell stuff to girls as well, and not only boys? Have big companies thought about that the typical gamer might not been an adolescent kid anymore, and has this impacted what you as a concept artist/designer have been asked to draw?
haha i like that thorny barracuda looking fish, that would make a mean looking alien warrior-race starfighter covered in spikes like that would be awesome!
Hi, It was a very helpful tutorial and well commented Feng as always. But just one thing worth to mention for new designer out there. When you are in the process of Design, please don't throw lines here and there without actually getting a picture in your head of how the shape looks like in 3D. In my beginning I used to do a great profile design, but when I try to port them to 3D (since I'm also a 3D modeler), I find a lot of trouble to get the idea of the shape I wanted from that line, even with the shading. Thus, I find myself going back to the design and try to remember the workflow I went through to get that line in that place. By time I used to write notes beside my designs. But the most good way to a successful design is to draw a line only to express an Idea or a technology a process if you want. Remember that and all the artist in the production pipeline will appreciate your design even if it bizarre.
I have so many questions but I'm afraid you've already answer them in the previous videos, if someone could make a post with all the questions asked and which videos are they answered, that would be great anyway, great job, don't ever stop, love yea :)
Thanks for tutorial, Feng! Can you give an advise or solution how to calculate a final budget as a concept artist for a work like this? You always says that it is fine to redo or redesign again and again if client didn't like the final result but none like to work with redesign for free. Basically, i have to calculate every risks and client moods and build a final prise for work BEFORE i have to start it. It is kinda tough but i know you can give a good advise for it. Please share if it is possible. Thanks.
You can sketch with pretty much everything. As youve seen in some of the earlier videos,he was using various techniques: Square brushes, circle brushes, fluffy brushes, textured brushes, blurred circle/square brushes, calligraphic brushes (my personal best),the fading brushes (faded to visible (the more you press)) or even the shortening brush (thin to thick (the more you press)). With a sketch, you just need to set the basic tones/colors/shapes of drawings,at the end, they wont be visible,so sketching is not so importnant for the look.
Hi! I absolutely adore your videos! If I may request one thing, my paintings always end up looking like big open spaces rather than intimate, enclosed settings. Could you maybe give some advice on how to make things seem a bit more intimate, like we're only seeing a very small space in, say, a forest? Even if you never get to it, your work is so inspiring! Thank you :)
Dear Sir, Can you make an episode showing the students work which includes both the final version of their sketches of paintings and also the constructional line work. I am working in softwares like 3ds max where the I have to model some vehicles without reference images. This will help me create the wire frame and the front side and top of the objects easily. I'll be happy to see something like this if you plan to do so, THANK YOU.
Thanks for all the info. I know that it come with lots and lots of practice. But i did practice alot and the linework on photoshop is just so bad compare to the one when i use pen/ pencil on paper.
Do you find yourself using more the Wacom Intuos or the Cintiq monitor? Either for sketching or painting/coloring? I have the Intuos Pro Large but wondering is it worth using/investing in to the Cintiq 21ux DTX-2100 2nd gen,(2048 pressure sensitivity) they are like $1000 used now on ebay, ( even if you have the cash to spend but if you don't need it why would you right?) just wondering thanks Feng !
Hello Sir, I have a question about drawing method - Isometric vs. Perspective. I have an engineering background which includes mechanical design using Isometric, but now I finally changed to Game Design and Concept art. So where do we use Isometric and Perspective to get the best out of them. Thanks in advance for your upcoming answer :)
I think a video is comming soon, since the delay from ep.74 and ep.75 was 2 mouths, same as ep.75 and ep.76. So,i expect the video is comming before new year or in January.
just a request for the next video... but can Feng make his next work in 4k and then post it in his blog. I would really like to have a good resolution wallpaper for my monitor from Feng's work. :) :) :) Bless! Oh! and in dark tones (i don't like bright colors wallpapers its hard to see the files on top of it) :)
Hi Feng, I've watched your vie does for a while now and I have some questions about your vehicle design. I've got Scott Robertsons how to draw book, he focuses a lot on a very technical view to drawing your concepts, making sure you have construction lines for basically everything. How much do you rely on constructions and how much is simply by eye, do you require less and less construction lines over time? As i dont see you doing much in the way of constructions in your fish fighters in perspective. Hugo
Hey Feng, i got a question and i am really curious whats your take on that thing: i am doing a lot of studies, especially materials and ligtning, learning stuff, reading theory etc. i did that probably so much that i cant stop thinking of theory in the process. i am more into thinking about what it "should look" to stay true to theory. but sometimes i wonder if its sometimes a better idea to cheat a bit and faking stuff like materials etc to make it look more "badass", awesome or whatever... a littel example: placing highlights on metall to achieve a certain look, even if there is no light in the scene where the highlight is comming from. or lighten/darken stuff even if you know that it isnt true to theory. hope you get my point, thanks&cheers!
Hi Feng, great video! How do you draw lines so smooth and so straight? Do you use a ruler or smoothing function or you just practice a lot? Do you have a video tutorial on drawing smooth lines on the tablet? Thanks for making great videos! Cheers!
Hello Feng i have a question if you dont mind considering that am now 27 and by the time i apply ill be 28.5 would you consider it too late to get into the industry ?is it possible to compete with some one who started 10 years earlier ? and could you please provide me with some insight since i didnt work in that field before, i will be leaving a job in architecture while being married and spending all i have for this move, would you think finding a job in the field tough ? its a massive jump for me and i really want to make sure i dont leave a good living to live in the streets in 2 years time. i understand that it depends on how good you are and how lucky at the same time. but i really need an insight since you have dealt with many graduates and you v seen how many succeeded and how many failed plus you know how long it took them to find jobs.
Feng has some earlier videos where he answers viewer questions about the industry while he paints, your should check them out if you havent yet. Hopefully you get a reply from Feng!
Hi Kiran Jesse, good day and thank you for the message. The program used in this video is Adobe Photoshop. We hope the information is helpful. Thank you and have a great day ahead. =)
Hey Feng, How about redesigning a game like Brave Fencer Musashi? I would love to see a modernized version perhaps with a serious undertone yet remain true to the source material
Hey Feng really really smooth lines, I wonder how can I draw such smooth lines, are there any tips or I just need to practice over and over again on my wacom tablet
Follow thesse steps: 1.Get a paper 2.Get a pen 3.Grab a paper 4.Place a paper vertically in front of you on a smooth surface 5.Hold the pen 6.Start drawing horizontal lines with fast movement of your hand 7.Do it from top to bot of the paper 8.Do it as much as you need until you naturally start drawing straight lines 9.After you finish with horizontal lines, then start drawing the vertical lines 10.Get a paper 11.Get a pen 12.Grab a paper 13.Place a paper horizontally in front of you on a smooth surface 14.Hold the pen 15.Start drawing vertical lines with fast movement of your hand 16.Do it from right to left of the paper (vice versa if youre left handed) 17.Do it as much as you need until you naturally start drawing straight lines 18.After you finish with vertical lines too, then start drawing circles 19.Get a paper 20.Get a pen 21.Grab a paper 22.Place a paper in front of you on a smooth surface 23.Hold the pen 24.Start drawing circles with fast movement of your hand 25.Do it as much as you need Youre welcome :)
Hello! Thank you for this wondeful learning material. I follow your advice for a long while now. I recentlly started taking drawing classes. The teacher says that my lines are too clean and "engineresque" and now he is trying to teach me to draw more free, artistic, dirty lines. This goes against what I struglled to achieve so far. Could this be true? Could lines be too clean?
In your last episodes you said "mostly big clients are not taking risk and do different things" You which games took risk recently and became succesful? I wonder your opinion about it.
Λέανδρος I don't know if everybody uses Painter more than PS, but painter is specifically designed for digital painting, so it has a lot of advanced paint features not directly available in Photoshop. For simple sketching you can use whatever you like best.

Hi Miklas trolle, good day and thank you for the message. For your reference, the students and instructors at FZD School use the Wacom Intuos Pro (medium size) tablets when working on digital mediums. We hope the information is helpful. Thank you and have a great day ahead! =)
Hey Feng I've watched quite a lot of your videos and you talk a lot about fundamentals, I was wondering if you might be able to suggest some literature, like a text book or something that one might be able to follow to improve in that area. I know you recommend attending classes and so on, but I don't have the time to commit to something regular. Thanks, and thanks for your amazing videos!
check out the early fzd videos where Feng anwsers viewer questions. A nice free source is any of Andrew Loomis books. He has them online for free (yes legal), very helpful fundamentals. google search it.
Hey everyone, I was wondering if you know how the whole salary situation works with being a concept artist at a studio. Do you need a degree if you want to earn a higher salary compared to someone who does not have a degree? Thanks in advance
No a degree isn't necessary to get into our to flourish as a concept artist. But get ready to grind hard for your opportunities. Especially those first few jobs will require you to work hard for sometimes very little. Just to build a resume. Also I'd recommend working on an indie project where no money is even gained unless you release a successful game. It will prove you are dedicated and can work well with all facets of the production line. A degree can and will help your skill set. But it does not grant you a job. It just makes you more well rounded and can bring you in contact with industry leaders at graduation events. Ultimately this job is portfolio based. Most hiring managers will say the first thing the they look at when judging candidates are their portfolio. I am an aspiring concept artist with no degree coming from graphic art background. I am just giving you the info I've gathered over the last year or so. This job will not make you rich. But you will live comfortably and if design is your passion you will be very happy. Even doctors and lawyers are miserable, no amount of money can buy happiness. Instant gratification yes, but not happiness. But I'm sure you know that.
DTownMalo Thank you so much for your response! I love drawing and designing, even though I have not learned all of my fundamentals yet. I plan on applying to FZD school within the next 2-3 years. In the meantime, I am just learning by watching tutorials on TH-cam and practicing every day. Thank you again! :)
PictureThisLeon Your welcome! not a bad way to learn. TH-cam and books can teach you all you need to know really. Studying at fzd would be a huge leg up( i think a student was hired to dice to help with battlefield games a couple graduations ago, at graduation!) But don't get bummed out if you can't afford it. If your dedicated you can do this. Just remember to also learn the video game development process. His last video before this one was boring to some people but to me it was one of his best because he went into the production process. That's the stuff you can't learn just anywhere. Also a tip. Take a lot of mental pictures(and real ones). Like feng has said many times build a visual library. Go out. Experience as much as possible in the since of scenery. Our mind has an easier time recreating places we've been rather than photos of places. When you go to a place. Sketch it from your perspective. Now mentally place yourself somewhere else within that scene and re draw it from that knew perspective. Even if you have to make up a little. It will teach you to view things on three dimensions. And to log it in your memory as such rather than a snapshot of where you were standing and what you were looking at. Good luck man. Maybe one day well both be working on the same project and not even know it! Haha
Hey Feng, I haven't received my high school diploma yet. It would take to long to explain, but my school really screwed something up and is being extremely unreliable. Idk if things work differently in Singapore or if there's some crazy way around it, but is there anyway I could apply to your school without my high school diploma. I will continue to try and work with the school to get it. I highly doubt this, but can a promising portfolio or one with a lot of potential help me out if I'm unable to receive my diploma?
Hi Deus, Good day and thank you for the interest in FZD School of Design. We understand your situation as some institutions may take time to issue the transcripts. However, as per our will School’s Admissions requirements, applicant’s need to submit their educational certificate / transcript in order to apply at FZD School. It is possible to proceed with the rest of the application process if you require more time for your high school diploma to be ready. Please kindly note that only applicants who have completed the application process (document submission and interview with the Admissions Department) will be considered for their desired intake. Feel free to email us at contact@fzdschool.com for further assistance. Thank you and have a great day ahead. =)

A blast from the past, loved every second!
That ending tho xD
It's amazing to me how your art-design-efficiency ideas translate to other creative endeavors, like writing music. Thanks!!
Its scary how excited i get when i see a new video for design cinema. O.o Thanks Feng!
"The training is nothing! The will is everything! The will to act."
I have been following you for over 8 years. You do great work but from my perspective at least, you are my favorite artist because you are such a great instructor. Thanks for all the great material.
Gorgeous ship designs and very helpful advice in this video. Thanks Feng!
Thank you very much for this,
All of your video's have meant a lot to me,
I hope you will continue uploading some older ones like these, you can really see how you've changed.
Wow awesome! was just thinking it would be great if there was another FZD video up, and presto here it is. cant wait.
The new youtube covers are awesome!

Thanks for another video and Thanks to Gnomon School of Design for sharing.
GOD THANK YOU FZD you're amazing
Nice video Feng, enjoyed a lot as a fellow aviation enthusiast.
Inspirational and great work, thanks.

Thank you sensei for all your work
Great video Feng, thanks for this!
Love your work! I was also wondering if you could do a video focusing a little bit on waterscapes and just some general tips on how you approach it.
Thanks Feng, this was really insightful!
Great great stuff! Really informative!
Excellent Episode, and funny too - Thank You ;)
awesome video Feng, Thanks!!
Thank you for your great video! Really enjoyed, even though the "noodling".
awesome as always
Really nice mate, thank you
I'm unsure at what point the audio mismatched the video you were describing but I knew that when you described something, that I would see it in 5 seconds haha.
As always, so helpful and a great vid.
haha i like that thorny barracuda looking fish, that would make a mean looking alien warrior-race starfighter covered in spikes like that would be awesome!
Hi,
It was a very helpful tutorial and well commented Feng as always.
Excellent!
which of the cintiqs do you recommend for concept painting design??
Que tipo de pincel esta usando en este video?
your way of speaking changed over the years!
Great results !
i would love to know the settings for that brush used.
I have so many questions but I'm afraid you've already answer them in the previous videos, if someone could make a post with all the questions asked and which videos are they answered, that would be great
anyway, great job, don't ever stop, love yea :)
Feng mentions he only uses one brush in painter. Does anyone know what brush that is or brush settings? Thanks
Fen - I am impressed as usually! Thnxs for tutorial!
Awesome!!!
What are the brush settings for the sketches? I usually have transfer on my brushes, but they don't work well for me.
Damn skills. love you
How do you search image on google? Like different thpe pf
Plants and fish
What does IP mean?
Intellectual property, a blanket term for a franchise, title, series or a character.
When can we expect a new episode???
Great tutorial as always :)
how do you get such straight lines on a tablet?
Thanks for tutorial, Feng!
Can you give an advise or solution how to calculate a final budget as a concept artist for a work like this? You always says that it is fine to redo or redesign again and again if client didn't like the final result but none like to work with redesign for free.

Witch Cintiq do you recommend? using zBrush/photoshop
When your sketching, do you use just a normal Dot brush with varied Line weight? or do you use a different brush?
You can sketch with pretty much everything. As youve seen in some of the earlier videos,he was using various techniques: Square brushes, circle brushes, fluffy brushes, textured brushes, blurred circle/square brushes, calligraphic brushes (my personal best),the fading brushes (faded to visible (the more you press)) or even the shortening brush (thin to thick (the more you press)).
With a sketch, you just need to set the basic tones/colors/shapes of drawings,at the end, they wont be visible,so sketching is not so importnant for the look.
This is easy and inspiring
im a feng zhu junkie, i want more
Hey Feng, how would you go about mastering fundamentals like perspective drawing?
Scott Robertson's How to draw book
Amazing! :)

how can you do such clean/strong line quality. Is this on cintiq or wacom.
Cintiq is made by Wacom.
sorry i mean the normal intuos
Those clean/strong line quality comes from experience. No brush or anything, just practise every day for years.
Thanks for all the info. I know that it come with lots and lots of practice. But i did practice alot and the linework on photoshop is just so bad compare to the one when i use pen/ pencil on paper.
Hey OP, you might wanna check out that software called Lazy Nezumi. :)
Hello Feng, do you change your brush size while you work (for lineweight) or do you only control the size with pen pressure?
When you work for the cinema, How do you manage the
Copyright?
Do you find yourself using more the Wacom Intuos or the Cintiq monitor? Either for sketching or painting/coloring? I have the Intuos Pro Large but wondering is it worth using/investing in to the Cintiq 21ux DTX-2100 2nd gen,(2048 pressure sensitivity) they are like $1000 used now on ebay, ( even if you have the cash to spend but if you don't need it why would you right?) just wondering

Hello Feng
i have a question if you dont mind
considering that am now 27 and by the time i apply ill be 28.5 would you consider it too late to get into the industry ?is it possible to compete with some one who started 10 years earlier ?
and could you please provide me with some insight since i didnt work in that field before, i will be leaving a job in architecture while being married and spending all i have for this move, would you think finding a job in the field tough ? its a massive jump for me and i really want to make sure i dont leave a good living to live in the streets in 2 years time.
i understand that it depends on how good you are and how lucky at the same time.

Could someone tell me the programs which were used?
Hi Kiran Jesse, good day and thank you for the message. The program used in this video is Adobe Photoshop. We hope the information is helpful. Thank you and have a great day ahead. =)
Thank you! Have a great day as well!
Kiran Jesse He used Corel painter for the linework then photoshop for coloring , feng always uses painter for line
Hey Feng,
How about redesigning a game like Brave Fencer Musashi? I would love to see a modernized version perhaps with a serious undertone yet remain true to the source material
im being curious, what software were you using in the vid? it doesnt look like photoshop
Hey Feng really really smooth lines, I wonder how can I draw such smooth lines, are there any tips or I just need to practice over and over again on my wacom tablet
Follow thesse steps:
1.Get a paper
2.Get a pen
3.Grab a paper
4.Place a paper vertically in front of you on a smooth surface
5.Hold the pen
6.Start drawing horizontal lines with fast movement of your hand
7.Do it from top to bot of the paper
8.Do it as much as you need until you naturally start drawing straight lines
9.After you finish with horizontal lines, then start drawing the vertical lines
10.Get a paper
11.Get a pen
12.Grab a paper
13.Place a paper horizontally in front of you on a smooth surface
14.Hold the pen
15.Start drawing vertical lines with fast movement of your hand
16.Do it from right to left of the paper (vice versa if youre left handed)
17.Do it as much as you need until you naturally start drawing straight lines
18.After you finish with vertical lines too, then start drawing circles
19.Get a paper
20.Get a pen
21.Grab a paper
22.Place a paper in front of you on a smooth surface
23.Hold the pen
24.Start drawing circles with fast movement of your hand
25.Do it as much as you need
Youre welcome :)

check out the early fzd videos where Feng anwsers viewer questions. A nice free source is any of Andrew Loomis books. He has them online for free (yes legal), very helpful fundamentals. google search it.
ColCoolman Thanks very much!
Oh yeah!! \m/
Don't you wanna write your own book about drawing and concept art?
Hey. Your Videos are great. Could you perhaps do another characterdesign video?..perhaps in real time again?
thanx master :)
Haha
PictureThisLeon sense* not since
DTownMalo Will do! Thank you for your knowledge kind person :) Good luck with your future!
please make a new video

Hey Feng, I haven't received my high school diploma yet. It would take to long to explain, but my school really screwed something up and is being extremely unreliable. Idk if things work differently in Singapore or if there's some crazy way around it, but is there anyway I could apply to your school without my high school diploma. I will continue to try and work with the school to get it. I highly doubt this, but can a promising portfolio or one with a lot of potential help me out if I'm unable to receive my diploma?
