I honestly think people forget some of the Javert's due to the excessive popularity of others. In all actuality, Roger Allam, the original London Cast Javert, (the man who CREATED the role) is just as good as Quast. Terence Mann, the original Broadway Cast Javert is also really good. Not as vocally impressive as Quast or Allam, but his acting is magnificent. There are reasons why these men are originals. Now don't get me wrong, Norm Lewis is really good, but I believe Quast and Allam display the resonant, dark, and powerful voice that is required for Javert
Vocally: Quast "wins" hands down. Norm Lewis and Tam Mutu joint seconds. Allam has a beautiful and expressive voice, but - in this clip at least (I did not realise he was a singer, since I have only seen him as a tired inspector in detective stories,) - does not display the same vocal prowess as Quast (he is like a locomotive!), Mutu or Lewis. Expression: Quast "wins" here also, with Roger Allam as second and Norm Lewis as third.
Nice to see Roger Allam added here. He is THE Javert. The original Javert in the very first english speaking adaptation of Les Mis. He's the best Javert in my opinion. His voice is smooth while not being overbearing and yet has this commanding presence about it. It's perfect. He's definitely my favorite Javert.
When i sing Stars i always try to do it like Phillip Quast, he is by far the best Javert. Terrence Mann sounds like i do when i'm drunk and singing around the campfire....
I like how most of these actors don't try to sound like Quast. I feel like too many Javert actors (2000s onwards) just try to be Quast, not Javert or their own interpretation of Javert.
I love how you have chosen parts of the song for each actor to best show off their voice! Phillip Quast IS javert but I love Hadley Fraser too! Tam Mutu is pretty good too!
Allam is amazing. Would have loved to hear him sing the new version with updated ending. Lewis and Fraser are great too. My only issue with "Hadley Javert" is that if he's Javert, he can't simultaniously be my favorite Grantaire of all times.
Allam sounds pretty darn good. Tam Mutu is a favorite of mine. Quast is still the best, of course, but let's not forget the other Javerts out there that do fantastic.
Not entirely fair, as Quast's version is the better *recording*. But yeah, Quast was Javert down to his toes; his suicide performance, while not as rich as "Stars" is chilling...and incredible sad with his realization of what he had been....
✨✨✨ is good... is good .... is good.... ITS PHILIP QUAST AMAZING YEAH VERY VERY GOOD & I LOVE HIM....✨✨✨❣️❣️❣️ oh, there were some more...uh... Tam Mutu is his minimi...✨✨✨
Allam and Quast hands down. Of the two Quest is the better singer, but there is just something about Allam's voice that pulls him up right beside Quast imo
Philip Quast first, (of course) but Hadley a close second. Tam and Earl v.good too. Also love Roger and Norm but perhaps not quite as much as these first 4.
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that, lol. Hadley Fraser isn't singing, he's just yelling. He tried to bring out the strength and passion in the song...but he failed, ahem, miserably.
As someone else pointed out, his tone isn't quite right. He sounds more like a jaded, hard-as-nails man who's about to face terrible danger unswayed...yet he doesn't quite have the zealous, "I believe in this, and I am doing God's work" feel to him, and he also doesn't really bring out the sadness of the character. He makes Javert sound more like a commander of an army than a misguided, overdedicated cop. Norm Lewis went too far one way and made an all-out unyielding and cruel Javert, whereas Russell Crowe in the movie went the other way and made a sad and broken but unpassionate Javert. I think the reason why people praise Phillip Quast so much, apart from his great voice, is that he gets the balance just right and plays the character very well.
1. Norm Lewis, 2. Earl Carpenter, 3. Philip Quast - Others like Hadley are great but these three are made to play Javert. And why is it that the majority say that whoever was on the cast album they listened to is the best? Philip is a great actor - not singer!
Jack Browsing Philip Quast is a great singer. You don’t keep getting cast in lead roles in musicals and win three Oliviers because you’re an actor who can “kind of” sing. Granted, everyone shown in this video is a great singer but what I appreciate about Quast is his clarity and ability to deliver vocally without overdoing it. Some others cannot hold a note for even a second without going into full vibrato.
Philip Quast is the daddy when it comes to this song.
Without a doubt!
Philip Quast's 10th anniversary concert version is pure perfection - beautiful, believable, effortless!
Quast gives the role the power, determination, force and single-mindedness Javert portrays. Bravo!!
❤️
Philip Quast is a miracle
Norm Lewis I think captures Javert so well. His voice has so much power, and harshness about it but also and honesty that I think works so well.
this video needed to be called Javert All-"Stars"
Philip Quast stands head and shoulders above any other version I've heard.
I honestly think people forget some of the Javert's due to the excessive popularity of others. Allam gave him darkness and turmoil and also created empathy in moments. The best.
Vocally:
Quast "wins" hands down.

Very well put.

Me too. I copy every aspect of Quasts 10th anniversary performance and bask in his glory!
Philip Quast is Javert...
No roger allam
Philip Quast of course
I like how most of these actors don't try to sound like Quast. I feel like too many Javert actors (2000s onwards) just try to be Quast, not Javert or their own interpretation of Javert.

And so it must be for so it is written - Quast is Javert!!!!
Quast is Javert, the stars are brighter when he sings
Quast all the way hands down
I love Norm Lewis. By far my favrite Javert. Plus he looks so damn good in that uniform!
whenever hadley fraser sings the final suspension of stars a year is added to my lifespan
Philip Quast and Norm Lewis are my faves. They're just DIVINE.
Quast all the way hands down he is the absolute best there has ever been and will be.
I love Roger Allam! Only because of the way he sings "grace" at 0:22. I don't what it's called but I liked what he did having the note higher.
I love Quast and Mercier... I live on the International Cast and the original concept album...
I will always believe that Roger Allam is the best one to have played the role.
Chris Buneo agreed
YES YES YES. And he was amazing live in 1985
I like how Russell Corwe doesn't sing in this video
You left out me. I sang this in the shower in 2020.
Javert is actually Philip Quast and that is all there is to it
I didn't know that Grantaire was Javert! Then that means Enjolras is really eponine!
Only one Javert. Roger Allam. You had to be there in 1985.
Earl will always be my favorite Javert.
Yep, it's Quast without a doubt lol
Should have thrown in Crowe for a little audio dissonance.
He's a great contrast.
Ezy Teri Reddy what from good to bad
@Mr crabs Kachow Exactly that.
Nah. Crowe can't stack up to these top contenders. And anyway he sung stars in a different key
Norm all the way!!!!
My guy is Phillip Quast. We are learning at les miserable in school.
hadley
Hadley and Quast
Quast - hands down!
Philip Quast, Hadley Fraser and Tam Mutu for me. Beautiful voices.
Allam is amazing. Would have loved to hear him sing the new version with updated ending. Lewis and Fraser are great too. My only issue with "Hadley Javert" is that if he's Javert, he can't simultaniously be my favorite Grantaire of all times.
Love how Allam has also played Jean Valjean :)
Did he?
They are all very good, but i do love Tam! When i saw him this year he was one of the best actors out of them all!
From his look, action and especially his voice... Philip Quast is the real Javert actually he is Javert.....
Allam sounds pretty darn good. Tam Mutu is a favorite of mine. Quast is still the best, of course, but let's not forget the other Javerts out there that do fantastic.
Hadley Frasier and Tam Mutu are two names I wasn’t familiar with. Tam feels like he’s third, behind Quast (my favorite, THEE Javert), and Allam.
Quast. And no other. He IS Javert.
Quast owned it!
Roger Allam always, closely followed by Quast
Not entirely fair, as Quast's version is the better *recording*. But yeah, Quast was Javert down to his toes; his suicide performance, while not as rich as "Stars" is chilling...and incredible sad with his realization of what he had been....
it brillant
Norm tam and Hadley are my faves :)
Phillip Quast! Honorable mention to Tam Mutu and Hadley Fraser
Phillip Quast
Hadley is the beat
✨✨✨ is good... is good .... is good.... ITS PHILIP QUAST AMAZING YEAH VERY VERY GOOD & I LOVE HIM....✨✨✨❣️❣️❣️
oh, there were some more...uh...
Tam Mutu is his minimi...✨✨✨
Roger Allam.
10th anniversary Quast is the one true Javert
Philip is Javert
Did you get the Terrance Mann audio from the 2003 production where he acted like he was drunk? Because that doesn't do him any justice.
Philip Quast by a mile.
@bendabledoll LOVE BSM especially in Man of La Mancha...I just thought that these guys were better than him but thanks for the input!
Allam and Quast hands down. Of the two Quest is the better singer, but there is just something about Allam's voice that pulls him up right beside Quast imo
My favourites are Earl, Philip, Roger, Terrence and Tam.
I came here to write Hadley Fraser, Philip Quast and Tam Mutu... But I see it doesn't need, you all have very good tastes ;)
Marko Matvere . Tähed teavad - are a best.
Ranking Javert’s.
1. Philip Quast
2. Anyone.
I think the Spanish Madrid 2011 version should be ranked with or either right under Philip Quast
And Fred Johanson?
Phhhhh.... How quickly we forget that Javert is not just all about Stars, Norm Lewis ties with Quast
Can you do an All-Star Javerts for Javert's Suicide?
Roger Allam, Gary Morris and Philip Quast. In that order!
Ware is hans peter jannsens
Philip Quast first, (of course) but Hadley a close second. Tam and Earl v.good too. Also love Roger and Norm but perhaps not quite as much as these first 4.
For me, Roger Allam is the only Javert. Quast is way further down on the list. Maybe it's because I saw the original London cast.
should've ended with quast, the best javert
Philip Quast is the BEST ever!!!... Tam Mutu and Hadley Fraser in that order =))
I liked norm
Am disappointed there is no Paul Leonard!
Am I the only one who likes earl carpenter ?
1. Hadley Fraser
2. Tam Mutu
3. Philip Quast
4. Norm Lewis
5. Roger Allam
No way at all. Fraser just yells the lines instead of singing.
I’d put it exactly like that too
Dance Moms And Broadway hell no switch quast and fraser
Norm and tam all the wat
roger allam & Phillip quest...Hadley needs to chill.
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that, lol. Hadley Fraser isn't singing, he's just yelling. He tried to bring out the strength and passion in the song...but he failed, ahem, miserably.
To be fair, he will have been told to sing it like that.
Earl Carpenter!
Am I the only one who didn't really like Norm as Javert?
He sings well, but I am not a fan of his tone of voice.
1. Philip Quast. 2. Earl Carpenter. 3. Hadley Fraser
No way. Fraser keeps yelling instead of singing.
Tam Mutu is the BEST

quast
I like most of them, but Hadley Fraser wasn't one of my favorites
Roger Allam... c'mon.
Quast all the way.
hadley fradser is not so good
All of them..... Nahh
