  • All are running 3/8" RSC. The Stihl has an 8 pin rim. (Might have been slightly faster with a 7 pin with that bar, in this wood though)

Well when you have to mod a larger husky to get it to cut faster than a smaller Stihl then I guess you still win. I know it's only a couple cc's difference, but it is still a different size. The guy that designed the 372xp and a few other husky saws is a saw builder that charges about $300 per saw to hop them up. Husqvarna responds so well to simple mods because he basically designed them that way. He claims he gets 50% more power and a prolonged life from his mods. But they're really not modifications at all. It's just quality control finish work not done at the factory like it should be. He charges a fee to finish your saw after you buy it.

    My numbers:
    first saw (395XP MM) - 12.03s 75% cut, 14.00s 100% cut
    second saw (395XP) - 17.73s 100% cut, 15.00s 75% cut
It would have helped if you could cut straight, but based on this, the MM mod saved you about 3 seconds (~125% faster). Very awesome!
    third saw (066) - 17.51s 100% cut, 16.88s 100% cut
The Stihl is either neck in neck with the stock 395XP or slightly faster (on the second cut). I'm surprised that the difference in speed was almost 0.75s between sequential cuts.
My opinion: For a 90CC saw cutting through only 16"-18" of wood (even hardwood), the saw shouldn't need a 7 pin sprocket, it should have enough power to pull the chain through without slowing down. The 7 is torquier, the 8 is faster - and was likely helping the Stihl here. If your saw was smaller, the bar was longer and/or you were burying it deep in hard wood, your logic would be correct though.

They all cut wood great, can't really see the point in a lot of these vids when it comes to time races, can't say I've ever worried about doing any of that when out cutting wood for the heater.

All great saws! As long as they get the job done, that's all that matters. I personally own a Husqvarna, but absolutely do not object to Stihl. He can send me any of the three, want my address?

that 395 is nasty.... to hell with an 066 or 660... had both. my stock 390 spanked my 660 with a 32" and husky 47 skip 8 pin... stihl is nice but husky's just flat run the piss out of the woods...

Fellow on one forum built a dyno for testing saws. 660 did really poorly, then some tweakers got major power boosts. Seems stihl's inclined to bask in their past glory. Then, pricing of saws & parts, and restrictive availability of parts keep me from even thinking of stihls, considering deals available on (better, IMO) machines from Husqy & Dolmar. Might accept a freebie though, if it's a healthy runner. (Did I mention, stihl dealers around Me are real gougers? Leaves bad taste.)

Wow its like BMW AND Mercedes. They both rock. Pick a color and then use your saw. Brand posers suck.

The cutting technique you're using for the Stihl appears to be blatantly more aggressive to my eye. Whether it was or not it was definitely different. I own both Stihl and Husky (I have twice as many Huskies) but I buy a saw based on the performance not the emblem so I like to think I am unbiased as possible. This test was not very well done because the cutting techniques used were vastly different for the Stihl compared to the Huskies.

The MS 661 is better but still a little disappointing on the power but then again mine is not broken in yet

Stihl is the strongest and most dependable, a Husky can't keep a chain and like to blow up but even without maintaning a stihl it''ll go forever, and the 066 cut's like a butter knife in butter in any kind of wood.
