- Perhaps the first 60s rock band to play ethnic world music, the KALEIDOSCOPE offered a mix of rock, bluegrass, middle eastern, jazz, country, folk, blues, flamenco, r&b, psychedelia, and other assorted genres. Using exotic instruments and unconventional arrangements, the KALEIDOSCOPE will dazzle with their own style of progressive folk.

I found Kaleidoscope a few years ago when down a TH-cam rabbit hole. They are one of those bands that I enjoyed and only later realised how much they mean to me. My favourite track is probably “Nobody”.
With the passing of David Lindley, time to look back on this, one of my favourite late 60's bands Matt.

Sol Felthouse was a friend of the family. He played with his family at my wedding.
He played at my wedding too, when I married his son.
One of my favorite psych bands. Favorite song is Pulsating Dream, and Please. Those harmonies and melody’s are just 👌
This band was the real deal. I value fine playing and they are among the best.
I saw the Kaleidoscope three or four times in '67 and '68- but i never went to see them- they were always opening for somebody I did go to see

Excellent research and presentation on a great 60s band that achieved only minor success during their time together. Especially interesting regarding their basically unknown work with Leonard Cohen and Larry Williams & Johnny Watson. My mother is Turkish and she actually had their first two albums so I am tickled pink with this video. By the way, Oud is pronounced as “oood” “and “Taxim”is pronounced as “Taxeem.” Taxim Square is a famous area of Istanbul’s European side.

I’ve been a big fan of David Lindley for years, worshipped his polyinstrumental nature (I too suffer from IAS). I play fiddle, banjo, mandolin, mandola, octave mandolin and Hardanger d’amore, hacked away at oud for a few years, but only today did I learn of Kaleidoscope while going down a TH-cam rabbit hole of listening to David Lindley tracks. And I also learned about this wonderful website today!
RIP David Lindley and my heart goes out to his family, and as well to his music friends such as Henry Kaiser. It is so hard when someone you’ve played with for years leaves this plane. You not only miss them and their jokes, but their unique style. And DL had one of those special sounds. You can hear one measure of him playing slide and instantly know it’s him.

David Lindley, huh! He has been a part of many albums and projects (Madagascar, anyone?) I have enjoyed over the years. But candidly, it's no mystery why these guys didn't track. It's the voices; you can't listen to that singing for an extended period, period.

I heard 'Egyptian Garden' on a college radio station a few years ago and loved it enough to check out more of their stuff, which was great. I had no idea that was them on Leonard Cohen's album. I love discovering hidden musical jewels like The Kaleidoscope and other unsung bands from the past (why I love Spotify). Great video, can't wait for part 2.

Great wonderfulness!! I recognize Chris Darrow's name from his playing with John Stewart in the early 70s, a few years after the breakup of the original Kingston Trio. Their music calls to mind a combination of The Lovin' Spoonful and The Penny Arkade. In the 1990s it was rumored that Larry Williams spent a lot of time in jail and was a broke pimp when he passed in 1980.

When I read 40 years ago that Jimmy Page considered Kaleidoscope to be the perfect band, I had to track down everything I could of theirs. Also I had been a complete David Lindley fanboy '82-'84.

A really cool band of guys committed to the psychedelic middle eastern sound, love their music.
Thanks for this, I heard those first 2 albums about 30 years ago because friends had bought the reissue’s on the great Edsel label. “Keep your mind open” still stands up today and I’ve never forgotten it.
You have inspired me to find their albums.
Their work on Leonard Cohen’s first album is great and is a story in itself.

I bought every one of their LPs when they were released, I really liked their music. Never got to see them live, though. My fave was Side Trips, followed by several tracks from their 2nd LP, 'Beacon from Mars'. Glad to see someone covering their history. Subbed for more.

About the Kaleidoscope name I'm not sure they were aware of the English band, they might have been but certainly not the Mexican one... that's a real obscure album that was only released in 1969 (although recorded earlier, and nobody in the band was actually Mexican!)

Thank you for introducing me to this group. I am aware of David Lindley through his work with Jackson Browne. I wonder if there was a regional aspect to their exposure and acceptance. I realize this might be considered late in the game for regional music to be such a determining factor for group success, and the inclusion of non-western instruments had already begun in pop, however, those sonic voicing certainly drifted from the familiar. I could see parts of the country where they were years from a platform of acceptable.
A cool, eclectic group. Ever notice How Beacon from Mars starts off with the Smokestack Lightning riff?
Real interesting stuff, I think the Young Rascals would be another good band to cover...
One of the few 60s bands I knew nothing about so I really enjoyed this. In terms of eclectic groups who made absolutely magnificent music maybe you could do an episode on the Millennium and Sagittarius meaning the works of Gary Usher and Kurt better. They made absolutely brilliant music and their vocals were as good or better than almost anyone out there

Thanks Matt. This is a band that I only know in passing. They tend to show up with a track or two on 60's compilations. I must have "Get Your Mind Made Up" on 3 or 4 different collections. Your video made me pull out the 3CD compilation "Pulsating Dreams" on the Retroworld label again (basically a complete works I believe), been too long!
The word "eclectic" might have been invented for these guys. Their musicianship is impressive and it's not hard to see why other artists admired them for that quality. Also no surprise they could provide a good backing for another artist, as they basically seem to do roughly the same thing within the band, for the guy who happened to pen the song.
I do feel they can sound, sometimes almost uncannily, like other bands from the period (for example the Lovin' Spoonful and Fairport Convention) and even within the same album they can sound like a completely different band from song to song. Maybe these are factors that worked against them in finding a larger audience, as people may have found them hard to figure? Again, for other musicians this may have made them more interesting.
Personally I find their long songs like Taxim, Beacon from Mars and Seven-Ate Sweet perhaps their peak achievements, as here they achieve something quite uniquely theirs.
I agree with those 'long-songs' as no one else could really achieve that in a live setting. I'm so glad we got 4 albums out of them! Too bad they could find more work backing other artists. Thanks for great comment!

I often confuse this band with the UK 60’s band Kaleidoscope. Always get excited when you post new videos, especially these deep dives of smaller groups.

The band’s mix on Cohen’s “So Long Marianne” is among some of the most unusual I’ve ever heard. The bass fading in and out etc.. Quite experimental. Those are wonderful tracks.

This is amazing…are you sure you didn’t make this band up!? If I did not know the name David Lindley , I would have suspected you made them up…too funny. No I never heard of them and I was 13 in 1967…of course I was in Florida not L.A. ….some cool sounds but man pretty oddball.
Great job, Matt. Kaleidoscope and Devil's Anvil were the 2 first world-music rock bands. While 'Side Trips' was recorded, the company (Epic) sacked several good songs (I have them) because they were nothing like 'hits' and then the LP became too short. At the same time (early spring 1967) Felix Pappalardi (Mountain etc) met some middle-eastern musicians. They recorded 'Hard Rock from the Middle-East' as Devil's Anvil. Unfortunately the release-date was postponed to a few days AFTER Syria and Egypt attacked Israel (in the 6 day war) and then their career immediately stalled. The LP has been very rare for many years. Do you know their 'short'-story?

This is great! I always heard a bit more about the U.K. Kaleidoscope but never knew much or anything at all really about the U.S. band. Never knew what they sounded like, so this is awesome psych ed 101. Makes me wanna pick up these albums and dig more into them!

Their album cover is similar to Rubber Soul. Dive Into Yesterday is one of the best song I've heard. I got to know them through Leonard Cohen biography, as they played on his debut. The best thing about the 60s music is how organic, inventive and fertile it was. A really magical period.
Dive Into Yesterday is a completely different band. That is the UK band of the same name. This is about the LA-based band.

The 2 names in contention were the Bagdad Blues Band, which the band nixed, and the Neoprene Lizards, to which the record company said 'no'. You're right - very much like Spinal Tap!
@@popgoesthe60s52 I think LeafInThe Stream referred to The English Kaleidoscope (also psych but much softer) from the same period and the Mexican Kaleidoscope (more punkish) They came later and are nowhere near Kaleidoscope (US). I also think there was a jazz-combo at some time.
