It really was the place to be. People from all the surrounding areas went here. I lived in the Smyrna area and we always went to this mall. Even people from Murfreesboro came here. But sadly it became more urban and all the suburban folks went elsewhere.
This is so depressing. I was a Hickory Hollow Mallrat between 1997-2002 and I remember Friday and Saturday nights the mall was straight up packed with teenagers. This was right before the gangs came in and destroyed the mall and the surrounding area. I worked at Petro's Chili and Chips in the Food Court (back then called the Food Garden). I still have some pictures of it. I could most likely walk through the mall and tell you every store that was there around my time. This mall is very special to me and it was cool to see a walk through on YT, even though it's sad.
kode LiMe Hey there! I also worked at the mall during the same time as you did. Petros was awesome! Hickory Hollow Mall was a special place before the bad. It was really "the" place to go at one time long ago. Do you remember the store Mori Luggage and Gifts? That is where I worked.
That's awesome! I worked at JCPenney for several years and grew up going there in the 80's & 90's. My wife and I still make homemade "Petro's" about once or twice a month. It's to bad that place never took off but they are so easy to make at least. We loved that place! You've probably served us. =) Thanks!!! Do you still remember how to make them exactly as they were?
Bellevue Center Mall in Nashville is even worse. It is actually abandoned, unlike Hickory Hollow. I remember Hickory Hollow from when I was a kid. I didn't realize it had gotten this bad. With mega centers like Opry Mills and Nashville West moving in, traditional malls aren't in vogue any more.
is this the one with a train store and a fish store or somethin like that that was gang territory. I even saw tags in the bathrooms when I went there in 05! it looked like a deal was even goin on infront of dress barn o_O
There is an old mall in Chattanooga called Eastgate. Had all kind of stores back in the 90's. It's nothing like a mall now mostly call centers and a collage.
So very sad. We have a mall near me that is struggling too. All the inside stores are junky or closed up. Although, it still has a few good anchor stores. They built so many of these malls and they ruled in the 70's and 80's. Somehow things have changed with the internet or people do move onto other shopping malls/experiences.
CA after the Adam Walsh incident. Our mall in Ft Walton sucks I used to go there only when they had Earthbound then they moved out along with Hallmark and Kirkland's and a bunch of others and it almost looked like Sears was gone there wasn't one car in there lot and it looked all dark but I saw somebody come out. But I haven't been there for a long long time.
Wow! My wife and I met at Belmont University in 1988 in Nashvegas. She used to work at the Dillard's there. Many fond memories. Thanks for sharing. So sad!!!!
12:16 - Actually, that food court sign was added during the last major remodel Hickory Hollow Mall received around 2001 or so. Now, the sign that it replaced? THAT was relic of the 70s, for sure! Google photos of the mall, and you should be able to find a pic of it.
Was there in the 80's and I remember watching in awe as country singer Earl Thomas Conley was picking out eyeglass frames at one of those eyeglass superstores.
I remember this mall as a kid when I live in the area. Dont think there was a vacant store in there at that time, loved that place. I was surprised to see this great vid!
I grew up in that area. I remember there was a lot of gang activity at Hickory Hollow when it was "open". It continues to be a rough area now unfortunately. ☹️️
I lived outside of Nashville and fondly remember this mall when it opened. In its prime it was a great place to go. Other shopping opportunities opened in the more affluent parts of town and the Antioch area became a home for people being settled in Nashville from other parts of the world. A lot of the 'support' businesses on the outside of the mall closed and the whole area just looks ran down. Recently a college has opened, a library is being moved in and the Nashville Predators opened a practice rink in the area. It will never be the same as what it was but at least some of the area is being reclaimed. Thanks Adam! Great video, wish I could have ran into you on your trip here!
Someone could purchase the mall and turn it into the greatest paintball arena in the world. Entire mall, teams or free for all. Paintball lovers would come from around and pay big bucks. That's my million dollar idea for the day.
I remember my parents taking me here when I was a kid back in the early 80s. Toy store and corn dogs are all I remember about Hickory Hollow. Good times.
Before Zales, that store with the window cases was a sports memorabilia store with autograph helmets in the cases. Lived not too far from there when I was young. That mall was nice.
I was in the area today and actually stopped at mall and found your sticker stash believe it or not. I am apparently the only person that has been there cause all stickers were still there. Gave one to the Vietnamese lady at the only open business in the area, she was a little confused as to what the hell I was doing looking under trash cans. Anyway, thought you'd get a kick out of that. The rest are still there if anybody else wants to go confuse the Vietnamese lady.
That looks like a mall in my city, it was built as an Eaton Mall, when it was in its prime it was a beautiful place, my city is a college cities so now it's pretty much all college related facilities in the building but there are a few public stores. The way the story goes it was built on Indian burial ground, the legend says when they took the land to build the Mall the land had a curse put on it.
I have so many memories of this mall. Growing up in the 80's and 90's this was the place to be. Always filled with people. But sometime around the early to mid 2000's this mall went downhill. Sad to see this mall like this. The whole Hickory Hollow area was awesome at one time. Movie theaters, great stores, etc. Not the case anymore.
We have a mall where I live that reminds me a lot of this mall. It has been named many things over the years. When it first opened, it was called Forest Fair Mall. It has since been called Cincy Mills and Cincinnati Mall. I'm amazed at how long it's been able to stay open. There are just a couple of anchor stores left, Kohls and Bass Pro Shop, and most of the smaller stores have closed up and moved on. Back in the 90s though, that place was the place to be! It's sad to see these malls so dead and empty. Such a shame
It's 50 degrees down here in Tampa. I can't imagine how cold it is in TN. Sleep warm and schleep well (if possible). Was the heat on in the empty mall? The mall looks like Epcot Center minus the planters.... There's not too many thiiings in the abandoned mall.
I worked for Wal-Mart twice & that's where Code Adam originated, in honor of John Walsh's son, Adam, who's remains were found just down the road from my house in Orlando. Code Adam is for missing, possibly abducted kids & whenever I heard it at work, it sent me into a panic, because I'm a parent. Keep up the good work Adam.
So depressing to see the mall I used to hang out in back in the 80's and 90's virtually empty. I was stunned when I heard that the mall sold for a million dollars a few years back. I could have pooled my money together with some friends and bought it.
Yay a dead mall vlog! Every time I go to the mall near me I always think of how someday it will be just like this one. I'd like to visit one someday, I would vlog it too:)
Our area has also went through the decline of our malls. The mall was own by a partnership of two large holding companies. One of the partners sold out to the remaining company. The local mall was no where near as big as the Hickory Hollow facility but was still a major shopping center in our area. The latest loss was the Sears store. The remaining owner is trying a somewhat new approach to bring new life to the mall. Instead of leaving the unused portion of the mall to stand and rot in hopes of finding a new tenant they have torn down the vacant parts of the mall and have centered on making better use of the remaining portions by doing a complete remodel of the building. There are still some major chains located there and the new management is offering reduced rent to them if they stay. The before and after is actually very impressive. All new entrances, more entrances, all new lighting, a new entrance for cars from an existing expressway and much more. The best thing about the remodel is that have asked for no money from the city or anyone else. They will pay for it all. In the days of the taxpayer funding almost all of the new retail development in this are it is certainly a breath of fresh air. I tip my hat to the developers for this. I also wish the well. Is it working ? So far yes. The head count at the mall is much higher than before. People seem to be buying. The new owners have also signed several new stores including two national brands. All we can hope for is that it lasts.
+ Life of JUBO What's funny is this mall is what started the first demise of 100 Oaks Mall back when the Antioch / Nolensville area was like what Brentwood and Spring Hill are now. Now the area is overrun with Kurds and Hispanics.
Cool Springs Galleria and Opry Mills are where the people with money shop. Green Hills mall too. None of the other malls can survive. Just too many malls in the area. When you're back in Nashville check out Bellevue Center Mall. It is completely abandoned. Oh, and I know what code Adam is. I've worked retail too long! lol
Code Adam is a nationwide alert system that first began in Wal-Mart. It alerts employees over the public address system that a child is missing and to actively search the store premises. The purpose of Code Adam is to act quickly and effectively to prevent harm to any child who has been separated from a loved one.
I cannot believe you were in Nashville and I didn't get to hang out with you. You couldn't pay me to go to Hickory Hollow or anywhere in Antioch, it's become a very dangerous place. I miss how the area used to be and when this mall was the place to go.
+lorrie mccormick Adam keeps asking why a "mall like this" would die. All he'd need to do is spend a day or two in Antioch and he'd figure out why. Used to be such a nice area...shame.
I agree. As a kid growing up in the 80's and 90's the whole Hickory Hollow area seemed kind of magical to me. I know that sounds corny but It was always fun to go to the mall or the movie theaters or Media play. etc. Great childhood memories for me.
lorrie mccormick Same! I am just now seeing this 2 years later. I hate that I missed him! ☹️️ I spent my teens between HH and Rivergate malls. There's no way I'd go out there now. Rivergate is kinda rough now too.
The upper level is most likely more populated because its warmer. One of the classic tugs of war malls play with their tenants is over central heat. The mall plans to get heat from the stores, and the stores usually hope to get heat from the mall! lol
We have a mall in Bristol, Va that is similar. It's dying out. Mostly cause of high rent and new development going on around the area. Sadly it won't be long before our mall in Bristol will end up closing.
Sad to see old malls going out like this. I been there many times I am on the Tn boarder and it was a nice place to shop. But it had the same problems as the mall of memphis had over the years. Now take Ky oats mall that sucker has made a heck of a come back being in this area you would think it would be shut down. But the people and the city seem to love it. Also has been used in a few movies so that must help a little.
What's funny is that the theater right outside of this mall has been renovated from top to bottom with new stuff like recliners, so why can't Nashville do something with this mall like they did with Opry Mills following the flood?
Get a Linkin Park concert and even a (Please forgive me) Justin Beiber concert here and even get a Comic Con going there and I think the place would possibly Roar back to life. [Edit] Perhaps shoot a Mall Cop movie there where the Mall Cop gets relocated and takes the dying mall from crime and insanity and turns it around in to a very much better, crime free, and happy and thriving mall. And disclose the actual location on the movie. There are a few other ideas brewing in my head so you guys are pretty much getting my first and nu-refined thoughts on this one. I am open to constructive criticism and feed back.
Come down to carousel Mall in San Bernardino California, its almost dead and its beautiful, but only thing that remains is a Daniel's jeweler and a Chinese food spot. It still has the carousel that never operates.
I work in a store that's in a dead mall, actually it's a dead strip mall so we do get some 'drive by' traffic and enough sales to stay open, but the only other stores in our strip is a Dollar Tree, Sally Beauty supply, a nail salon, and a small hair salon. I'm very familiar with Code Adam. I used to work at a store that held weekly practices and kept a schedule of who covered what area in case of a Code Adam.
Great video Adam love this!!! it remind me of a mall that I used to go to as a teenager with friends in Dedham mall in Massachusetts in the late 60's into the 80s Dedham mall was a thriving lots of life specially during Christmas time had a lot of things I even have old pictures of this place because I used to go there as a child a lot during holidays as I got older the mall was dying the stores left there were only a handfull of stores barely a food court all the major restaurants were closed shut down and gone as well And inside the food court had three things to eat McDonalds, Chinese food and maybe Mexican food stop that mall stayed empty for a few years eventually they tore the mall down and turned it into a strip mall and it was all because of a festooned of burglaries lol! so they took them all down took a while and now these malls are individual stores in the area little individual stores they are all connected together in some way but it's nowhere near many stores and as lively as it used to be in the 80s and still no one goes there really much anymore.
One mall here everyone left cause the rent got too high. The Old Navy has been empty for 4 years. Blame it on Wall Blart and Ama zone. I'm mall confused.
There's a mall near me in North FL that's dying out, stores and restaurants closing all over the place. There's a few still left but after the theater closed that caused the mall to have a lot less public interest. When I was in South FL there was a mall that eventually became a shopping center and I think the one by me now will have that fate too eventually. A lot of it is people just flooding the local Walmart probably
ex wal mart employee, code adam is when a child is missing and the sign mean for little kid to remain at this spot and ask for help, its a reunion spot when there is a sticker
code Adam I think it means the store employees found or are looking for a missing child. They would announce a "code Adam" on the loud speaker in the store to locate parents or to alert fellow workers of a missing kid. In honor of Adam Walsh who went missing in a some store I don't remember, but he was John Walsh's kid of America's most wanted fame.
I imagine what causes most malls to close is over time, some of the larger stores will either file for bankruptcy or move to a more affordable location & due to the centre losing the pull of the big name stores it has a domino effect as less people would want to visit which reduces the customer presence which slowly kills it off. Like you said, they need to get a few big names in and visible(hopefully within not too big a distance from each other in the mall) and slowly but eventually it'll happen. Bluewater in Thurrock which is my usual mall has 3 big chains stores on each end (the layout is a massive triangle) that offer similar items but as there are plenty of stores in between, it's not as in your face as it would be there.
I remember when they were emptying out a mall in my hometown. It was almost like they were removing my memories. So much time spent in the mall during my middle school land high school days.
Dillards: Slightly Cheaper Neman Marcus. Santa Monica California had a mall that was in the same shape. Prescott Arizona is almost at that point. Malls thrive where people have the money for the item and sales tax, example Glendale/Thousand Oaks/Valencia California.
Many factors leads to the decline of malls: * Demographics change * High crime rates * Bigger/better locations malls are obsolete in view of online shopping, no need to go to an unsafe area to buy merchandise or worry about being robbed anymore when you can shop from the safety of your own home which is a shame because these malls are beautiful in person.
This TH-cam videos remind of back in 2000 there used to be a mall behind the stadium where the Tampa bay Buccaneers play at I went in there back it was dead back than it torn down about the time when won the super bowl now what there is Tampa bay Buccaneers training building
Hickory Hollow was a great mall about 25 - 20 years ago. It was a destination for suburban Nashvillians.
It really was the place to be. People from all the surrounding areas went here. I lived in the Smyrna area and we always went to this mall. Even people from Murfreesboro came here. But sadly it became more urban and all the suburban folks went elsewhere.

I worked at that mall.... borders mid 90's......it was a busy place a teenagers home away from home
I worked at DJs. Good memories before it was ruined by people from out of the area who moved in and brought crime with them
That's awesome! I worked at JCPenney for several years and grew up going there in the 80's & 90's. My wife and I still make homemade "Petro's" about once or twice a month. This is in my hometown, Adam ! Good to see you here in Tennessee. In the late 90's and early 2000's that mall was the place to be !
+Britany no doubt I remember when it was the only mall to go to. Sad to see it go downhill like that.
So very sad. We have a mall near me that is struggling too. All the inside stores are junky or closed up. Although, it still has a few good anchor stores. Can't believe they had a theatre shooting here. Hickory Hollow was making a come back and now this tragedy.
It wasn't really a shooting but he had a fake gun and got shot I was at McDonald's when it happen because i was getting a hair cut for school
But I haven't been there for a long long time.
the code adam is a lost child, I don't know if it was started by Wal*Mart or not but that was where I learnd about it. Love the vids keep it up

Hickory Hollow mall was the thing in the early 1980's. Antioch has become little Mexico.
Love dead malls also Adam !!!
I grew up in that area. I remember there was a lot of gang activity at Hickory Hollow when it was "open". It continues to be a rough area now unfortunately. ☹️️

Someone could purchase the mall and turn it into the greatest paintball arena in the world. Entire mall, teams or free for all. Paintball lovers would come from around and pay big bucks. That's my million dollar idea for the day.
Barney Stinson would want to make it a giant laser tag arena
Ian Payton now that sounds like a better idea! Less mess.

"The Nether Regions" - 7:32. Really enjoyed Tom being on this vlog!

Love you Adam your true fans appreciate everything you do🙏😃😃😃😃
Adam, went by here this morning, glad to tell ya, your stickers have been found. Sadly I didn’t find them...😢 keep the videos coming!
That mall is in a bad area of Nashville unlike it was when it opened in the late 70s

Fountain square is another crazy abandoned mall in Nashville.
adam, you can get a visitor's pass for ft campbell,ky, it's about 30-45 minutes north of nashville!!

The Gold Mine arcade was upstairs by the food court when it first opened near Swensons ice cream.
I would love to wander thru an empty mall but that is a big mall!! Thanks Adam..
I remember growing up a mall rat. This video brought back some great memories. Thanks for sharing Adam.
Awesome Adam!, so glad you did a dead mall video!.
I wish I would've ran into you on your Tennessee excursions. You seem like a pretty down to earth guy. Hope ya enjoyed the Volunteer State!
Where is the food court?
I cant believe you made that poor old man play Alfred Hitchcock! LMAO!!
I used to work at that mall! At the Eye Master's optometry office.
I wonder if Dan Bell knows about this Mall?
It's an mtsu professor that owns. The city has offered him millions to buy it but he keeps holding out for more money.
I've been trying to get him to visit it.

You should check out the Barstow outlets. There isn't a whole lot of anything there either
Realized this video was uploaded on my birthday!!

There are a few other ideas brewing in my head so you guys are pretty much getting my first and nu-refined thoughts on this one. I am open to constructive criticism and feed back.
I'd love to tell you whycome this mall and many others failed, but this is a family show and you want to remain positive.
This reminds me of The West Oak Mall in Orlando Florida. When the gangs took over the mall went downhill
I live right up the street from that horrible mall it used to be a great mall but now everybody goes to the Cool Springs mall in Franklin Tennessee
Early 80’s this area was very very nice
Come, and check out the Dead Mall in Laughlin Nevada.
Eagle Ridge Mall is slowly dying. I had good times in there. Pinellas Square Mall was my favorite mall but it's gone.
great video adam
Hitchcook haha :) Thanks again Adam for another great video :) xx
That store at 11:19 was the pet store! I remember it cause I got my rabbit there!
I remember when they were emptying out a mall in my hometown. It was almost like they were removing my memories. So much time spent in the mall during my middle school land high school days.
come to memphis we got 3 or 4 malls like this
I loved the game store that was in there right before it closed
the only mall in our city is basically dead. there's only two food places and a few stores, yet people are always in it. I don't get why
*Good Evening, Doctor Falcon*
Just visited here and it's like a ghost town. It's darker dirtier and spookier. Ugh this was my mall as a kid.
that was a floor scrubber !
I used to repair those
an anchor store is White Castles or Krystals.
Adam, you should explore the abandoned massive Rolling Acres Mall in Ohio. That would be an adventure to say the least !
I used to work at this mall, when I was 18 at EB GAMES!
Nashville state tech 😀 I miss that mall!
Dillards: Slightly Cheaper Neman Marcus. Santa Monica California had a mall that was in the same shape. Prescott Arizona is almost at that point. Malls thrive where people have the money for the item and sales tax, example Glendale/Thousand Oaks/Valencia California.
I'm amazed.
Many factors leads to the decline of malls:
* Demographics change
* High crime rates
* Bigger/better locations
malls are obsolete in view of online shopping, no need to go to an unsafe area to buy merchandise or worry about being robbed anymore when you can shop from the safety of your own home which is a shame because these malls are beautiful in person.
Mb's??
*****
Just haven't had the time to run out there, he's about a 6hr drive one way
This TH-cam videos remind of back in 2000 there used to be a mall behind the stadium where the Tampa bay Buccaneers play at I went in there back it was dead back than it torn down about the time when won the super bowl now what there is Tampa bay Buccaneers training building
What a small world! I'm from Tampa as well! I don't recall the mall you speak of but I remember the old Parkside Mall before getting renovated.
What's the status of this mall Adam? If you know. Is it shut down now, demolished or has it been saved.
its still there. i can tell you that. i live by it
isnt a code adam a missing child? i may be from the uk but i do love retail history.
What mall is that and, where is it? That looks like a mall I used to go to. You know what the code is to Code Adam since you're Adam.
went there years ago. sad it is going
This renovated version has also failed. This is a poor area of town, it will never work.
Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City is another slowly dying mall too
