- Asmongold recently made some statements about improving WoW but I think it strongly applies to Ashes Of Creation!
Asmon bigger video about this - • WoW Players Deserve This
I forgot to mention @RyveGenesis and @TangentsofCreationdid some tweets on this - check them out.

20 abilities is perfect imo, 10 is too low, 40 is too many
*EXACTLY !* 😉
at least 15 skills, 10 is not enough
Gimme 30-40, but let me use 8-10 at a time.
Asmon doesn't play WoW and wont ever play it again. There is no reason to remove the whole selling point of WoW just to appease him. If Blizzard bends to his will it will kill the game completely.
I don't want the burden to figure out the best add-on setup. Would prefer it just work
having 20 skills on a bar is about limit if you include buffs, utility etc.
Bro imma be out right *issed you guys actually turn my favorite game into Runescape 3 - I can get behind the no-addons movement. But turning WoW into League of Legends will just make people play League of Legends instead. I have a brain, and I can click more than 10 buttons on my keyboard. Please just play another game instead of ruining it for us that are still playing.
Damage Meter: you can play a game to have fun, but you should not have fun while others are carrying you. Since years I am always on top regarding damage. I have fun in finding out how to use buffs correctly, using synergies etc. I don't care what class you give me. I will almost certainly be the best DD, or briefly behind the no1 sometimes. With Damage Meter you can find out if someone is using you or your group without giving. And there's always the chance to tell other players, that you're still learning to play your char. Than it would be ok to help you out. I like Damage Meter. But I don't like to have to use a lot of Addons just because the game isn't giving me what I want.
This whole "fewer skills please" is a concern for me. I way prefer having a load of options, setting up keybinds/macros to suit my playstyle, developing muscle memory and adapting to every situation.
I don't care much about this for pve, so can only assume those who wants less skills are mighty bot slayers.
See i think the whole keybind/macro situation may actually be what some gamers are worried about here. Im pretty versatile and can macro as good as the next guy so idc which direction they take. I do think five skills and constant bar swapping is lame though.. looking at you eso.
But, games like Age of conan where you literally have like a hundred skills on each character with directional combos for most of them and tons of short duration buffs, macros arent just an option really they are mandatory unless you just dont mind everyone else in the game being head and shoulders better then you.
Appreciate the shout-out man! Great video!
I'm an idiot. I meant to mention your tweet in the video and completely blanked while recording. Much love
I know casual PVErs that have no problem doing their chill m+'s, Battlegrounds etc without ever using their defensives. I know high level PVPers and PVErs that can utilize all abilities. And you can macro buttons together, or make castsequence macros. Im actually shocked that people are so self centered that they grow out of a game(which is normal) but then try to ruin it for the rest of us. This happens everywhere in society. If you want to learn an instrument you can get kids versions with 9 keys for example. And your point about gatekeeping the game because of knowledge. This is literally what gaming is supposed to be. Even Tic-Tac-Toe has knowledge. It is what makes games rewarding. Counterstrike is the most straight forward mainstream game in history, and even in that game what people enjoy is the strategies, where to push, when to push, smokes, flashbangs. How to make the flash pop without the enemy being able to react. Remove the addons and you will get a natural destribution of players from high to low skill that can use however many buttons are available to them. Spending hundreds of hours so you can begins to utilize your full potential. It is a phone game, stop making YOUR brainrot MY PROBLEM.
you seem to know midcore player you cant be causal and do m+ that midcore to hardcore content.
If developers listen to streamers that troll and bully people like Asmongold does, then the game will be on it's way to failure. Take WoW SoD. These big streamers abused bugs in the PvP STV and got everything they needed before anyone else. I get that developers need to listen to the community but, not people like big streamers and they're followers. P.S. I have no idea what Ashes of Creation is. Your video popped up on my recommended. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck!
18-25 abilities + weapon swaps + different mounts to use. That's how you create a high skill cap and make pvp diverse and fun.
nop that's exacly the opposite
Give me buttons, give me options. I have a brain, keyboard and mouse, I don't need a mobile game.
10 spells for mage would be dull. If I want to be a fire mage I want minimum 10 fire spells, if I’m a frost I want 10 frost spells ect.I want each element to have some type of depth and be unique from each other.
It's not the absolute number of skills that matters, it's the number of skills that you need quick access to during combat, which is mostly main rotation skills, interrupts, heals, taunts, etc. On the other hand, skills like resurrection, long duration buffs, summon pet, conjure food, teleport to town and so on don't matter because they don't need to be accessed during combat and can be placed out of the way on the side of your screen.
Indeed, I sort of allude to that with the choice thing, having non combat abilities in a spell bar some place is all good
WoW has a strange dichotomy between specs where some need 3 full rows while others barely take up 2
Limited Action Sets, NO Addons, NO Parces, Perfect.
10-12 skills max should be the standard for mmos nowadays.
Also, no addons for Ashes pls.
Steven has already promised no add-ons
I fully agree with limiting the number of skills. Evolving passive skills rather than needing a third arm suits me perfectly.
To me the more skills the better, as long as they are clearly defined. The reason is you have different forms of things. Let me just list things: hots, dots, snares, roots, stuns, disarms, dazes, blocks, damage reducers, cc immunity, pulls, pushes, quick attacks, channels, cast time attacks, leaps, rolls, dodges, mana/energy/resource gains, ability resets, abilities that lower other CD’s, various buffs, stealths, interrupts, various special attacks. My point being look at how many categories I listed let alone specific abilities. For example as a healer you want access to slow casting standstill big heals, but also on the move lower gain hots and instant heals along with low resource use heals with middle heals. All that plus more for base healing abilities. The game should allow players to compete with simple rotations, but have a higher skill ceiling with those that skillfully rotate the other options out there. Simply removing options makes each character a lot less unique and puts most everyone on the same track with a much more copied and obvious META. Individuality goes out the door. It’s the difference between liking chess or checkers. To me this is one reason New World died so quickly. It was too simple combat and I refunded in beta. I’d rather play a single player rpg, but then again most are more complicated than NW. if you like NW then you like checkers vs chess, which is ok. However, I’d rather people not encourage other games to be dumbed down because they want it casual. You will still be able to play it casual, but someone willing to learn higher skill curves should beat you. Wanting to be the master of simplicity should not be rewarded. With so many classes, though, I guarantee you will be able to create builds that are super powerful with simple rotations. I always have been able to in games that allow build diversity. In fact, it’s almost advised to simply pick 1-2 skills and maximize them, especially ones on no or low CD.
I like abilities as they were in wow classic. Spells and UTILITY both are so important in a actual mmorpg
imo addons dont ruin the experience. content creators who insist on exposing every aspect of mystery and discovery by breaking down games and creating meta build guides before the game is even out ruin the experience. nothing will ever beat the likes of vanilla wow because theres no such thing as mystery anymore
I dont min max in my skillz anymore.. i dont mind making it harder on myself.
i will keep a piece of gear on if the upgrade looks like shit~!
All that to say i love that the game is fat with too many skills. ill take a wicked looking skill that does x damage less, i dont care if it takes me 1 or 2 more hits to kill it.
I played a warlock in Wow back when.. so i was usually at the top of the dps charts and prob voted to have you replaced ~! LOL
I think ashes is going to focus on 4 abilities, because you only get 4 ability augments from your sub-class architype. Now you are obviously going to use a few more, and you may get weapon augments, religion augments as well, but I doubt you will be able to boost more than 10 abilities. It is also the reason why I think the 64 classes will work. If you can double up augments, then the chances are each of the 64 classes will have key abilities that you can spec round. It may be that they become meta, but 64 metas isn't that much of a problem.
The other thing is that in the talent trees, there seem to be a lot of bonuses for using the same ability consecutively, at least on some classes. That sounds like Intrepid want the skill of the game, to be more strategic, about movement and group tactics, rather than about button pushing dexterity.
Now, it may be that you have different action bars for PvP and PvE or solo/group, but that is OK I think. In any case, I think there can be some optimism that we wont have to grow a 6th digit on each hand to be good at the game.
I do agree with you on add-ons, but there are key decisions to be make here mainly around healing/tanking which I believe was the main impetus behind add-ons in WoW. Do you allow click to heal? Do you display debuffs on the grid, and so on. In this regard I think there is hope too. Stephen seems to always play a healer, and so he has the experience to set a reasonable standard interface.
I'm going to stay upbeat on AoC. I have no evidence to cause me to be pessimistic, and they have IMHO got it right so far.
One thing you want to avoid is having so few skills with such long cool downs that you are left with nothing to do but spam weapon attacks. So how many skills you have becomes less relavent without considering cool downs.
However, ppl are saying too many skills and buffs are confusing and thats the problem with them lol. Thats far from the problem. If you give me 100 skills i will figure out a macro set up to easily use them all. Once the min/maxers figure out a macroed response to every situation with tons of skills and options the casuals will stand NO chance.
No one cares about his opinion. He doesn't even play the game and hasn't played it seriously in a decade.
I don't really care about his opinion on wow because I don't play wow and won't I think. But I do think he's probably actually right. It doesn't matter if we care or not, it matters if he is right or not.
The whole add-ons conversation just doesn't make sense for me in the context of AoC. I feel like people look at the game from the lens of a Theme park MMORPG where you go into instanced areas and safely do your dungeons/Raids. That's not the case in AoC, though; your hurdle for raiding is going to be other players. When it comes to PVP, the UI should be good enough, so that add-ons aren't needed.
Playing the same character with only 10 skills will probably get repetetive. If you want that go play some action MMO like ESO, or GW2. Or maybe try a MOBA
They're not going that way, though - all games that have done this, allow you to choose other skills and swap them in/out as required, but when you're out and about, or in dungeons - those skills are locked in.
Ten skills if you have a sidebar to swap in and out. Also, combos can work well, especially with other character's spells to take gameplay to another level.
Horizontal progression altering skills to suit the play session is great.
Killing addons would be welcome.
I do not agree with only 10 skills. I want around maybe 30.
I've been playing MMOs since the release of Ultima Online. The same shit has been said about every MMO since.
any game that has pvp will never end up being balanced. Its a waste of time to carter to that crowd and attitudes that come along with it.

there're many reasons combat systems like NW and ESO are shit, one of them it the small amount of skills. wow is bloated, and many skills are redundant, that's why asmon wants them gone, but ashes has not even been tested yet.
Ashes on the other hand offers the ability to use less but more powerful skills, you if you want to have 8-12 you can, but you can also go for 20 less powerful skills that synergize with each other, this is how the system was described.
I don't see a reason to remove skills just because a group of players wants less of them when the game already offers you a way to have less on YOUR bar, tho a good compromise would be compacting things like combos, no reason to have a 1-2-3 combo be 3 different slots.
See I don't think that the small amount of skills in action combat games is worse, I prefer it.
Less skills is preferred. New world feels like a dark souls mmo which is nice
@@GenDrake3you're delusional, go play a real souls game.
@@SocialFutility I have dork. Over 2k hours across all souls games. Go sit in the corner
Are you still playing new world jay ?
Yes - I am a lunatic
@@AshesOfOdditya. HUGE lunatic 😂
everyone hates horseteethman
As far as the number of abilities on the bar, the cap should be about 12 to 15. However, Ashes also includes a number of non-combat on the bar as well, such as see traps, pick lock, and see hidden items and persons. So, a few extra slots are needed.
Great vid, Asmond just wants another WOW..plain and simple....nothing wrong with that, but that's the bare bones truth. Anywho, NO addons plz. I've been playing since Ulitma Online and I've never used an addon in any game...see no need to honestly. Steven has already stated no DPS meters in the game..which is a VERY good thing IMO. It breeds nothing but asshattary. The skill or abilities doesn't really matter to me as long as I have a way to do quick load outs depending on what I'm doing or about to do is fine with me...I mean casting the same lighting ball spell for 50 levels will get VERY boring.
Is this ashes of creation out already
Erm no, Alpha 2 is this year though
@AshesOfCreationOddity OK, I can't wait to play it
agree, Ashes gets it right, yet its not out yet. so we dont know if its right :)
Appreciate the content Jay, keep the content coming!
I prefer fewer but impactful skills. Lost Ark does a pretty good job in this regard.
After having played New World, I find AoC's tab-target combat too slow and immobile. I have an Alpha 2 key and hope the game will prove me wrong.
NW needs way MORE abilities, though. 6-10 is a nice sweet spot, but they have to actually all feel good to press
I only ask for a combat log for my character alone that I can parse separately in a 3rd party program (not something to add on to AoC) so I can learn, optimize, etc. Let's you really prove if something is working too. Think Star Parse for SWtoR but only for your character so as to avoid the toxic gatekeeper nonsense. Give me that and a game provided customizable HUD and I'm a happy Noob.
I agree.. The amount of abilities in wow just makes me feel hesitant about returning to the game.
No addons would be awesome, even playing field for everyone, and it would just make the game better in general.
you need to take a cough drop
We need more reactive action based combat like new world. Ashes of creations combat looks so outdated that it plays like it's supposed to be black desert 2.0. Combat is just mind numbing skill spam against sponges
10 abilities are perfect , Ashes must not be for hardocre players but for casuals too , just like Last Epoch is something between Diablo 4 and Path of exile .
Also i believe Tab target combat is outdated and not fun at all ,i know theres option for action oriented combat in Ashes and i hope its working fine .The one of the things that i loved in New World is the combat ,very active ,you dodge attacks without the "homing missile" and rng dodge of tab targeting
gl to u ashes players i hope u all get a reduction of skills or keybinds. we wow players especially me had long given up. can u imagine a dps rotation for eg arcane mage? u need phd + a few addons to even start competing. i bid u goodbye now.
If you arent good at the game and you are constantly bootom dps chart while being a dps, dont expect people who wants to be the best to accept you. Find yourself a casual guild, which tbh is 99% of guilds, and let the 1% enjoy being the best
so damn true
Casual player... You're opinion shouldnt hold much weight.
He's not right at all. he's 20 years to late on addons, 40 man raids where terrible and plunderstorm is not a success yet, at all. most seems to be doing it because they have to, my guess it will be dead in week or two when people get board. Ashe of creation will die like all the rest of the new mmo's.
Agree more skills to press doesn't make the game fun (10 i could agree)
- under 5 is really bad, higher than 15 is clunky AF
Addons are indeed killing games (screen aestetics aside) everything else is garbage
- I don't wanna play chart simulator
wow i was following the development but the game now looks really outdated. shame
Agree with moss points but we need a way to know about the dmg or healing maybe a way to know the top 5 and the end of raid ? In lost ark it feel bad to have no clue of how your doing you if you did not get mvp
a fucking yt channel for a game that doesnt exist
jesus fucking christ
