The day after the day off game. Davey Johnson’s best managerial decision. Seeing that the Mets were tired and distracted after the tough series with the Astros and losing the first two games in New York he cancelled both media day and workouts and told them to go to their hotels and relax. Keith Hernandez wound up taking a four hour nap. It paid off.

Jerry Koosman was “The Koos can’t lose” in 1969 and Bob Ojeda was “You can’t beat a Ojeda” in 1986. The best Mets teams always had a top line lefty starter tossing gem after gem.

Boyd threw a tantrum when he got to the dugout after the top of the first. There is a framed shot of him shown after the commercial break before the bottom of the inning. I clearly remember in the original broadcast seeing video in that frame of Boyd kicking over the bench and fuming while the other Sox kept clear. Seems to have been edited with a still shot replacing the video.

I was a kid at the time just getting into baseball and I was a big Mets fan. I wasn’t overly familiar with the American League players. The way they talked up Boyd during warmups I thought they were facing Cy Young and didn’t stand a chance 😂😂

1986, WHEN BASEBALL WAS STILL BASEBALL, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE STUPID DH. NO GHOST RUNNER AT 2B IN XTRA INNI NG GAMES, NO PITCH COUNT, NO LIMIT ON THROWS TO 1B BY THE PITCHER, NO OVERPAID FIVE TO SIX INNING STARTER.

But also no walk up music, no glove adjustment routine b/w pitches , no armor to be taken off after a walk or a hit. , no replay challenges, no specialty relievers facing one batter ...all the things that caused the game to drag.
      This was special. Just baseball

Interesting piece of meaningless trivia. In their first 3 World Series the Mets had a leadoff Home Run in Game 3!
38 years later and I'm STILL kind of shocked that Vin Scully (and everyone else in the booth) had no clue that the Mets lead off Game 3 of the 1969 and 1973 World Series with a home run too!! Tommie Agee in 69 and Wayne Garrett in 73.

Lol I feel like 40% of the league was on white. Gooden and Strawberry. Oil Can Boyd lmao. Just hilarious. On another note could you imagine a black dude having OIL CAN as a nickname today Lmao? Wouldn't be allowed. Too racist. Wish we could go back to late 80s early 90s and stay there permanently.

Third best pitcher for the Red Sox wouldn’t have cracked the Mets rotation. But in a series where you can start Clemens and Hurst five times you can keep it close.
