In my perspective, Beau wasn’t as traumatized by the whole thing as his family thought he was! When he talks about it, he explained (in one of the chapters) that the hardest part was losing his purpose and sense of self. Like he didn’t know who he was or what he was supposed to do after he left the military, and that was the main issue in his head! He does talk to Bailey at one point and tells her why he came back for the guy he rescued, how little food they had to eat, and how he even had to eat cockroaches, but he says that he knew it was going to go like that the second he decided to turn back to get the guy. So the aftermath of the incident itself wasn’t as traumatizing as the fact that now, everything he was had to be reinvented!

The way you felt about hopeless is how i felt about things we left behind by lucy score😂. I think i felt like this with alot of the releases as i built them up in my head and painted this story which obviously didnt happen. The 3rd book is Henry and it's already up on GoodReads with a set release date for summer 2024!!! The 4th book is speculated to be about JJ. Idk if we're getting more after that tho
The whole chestnut springs series had no depth in my personal opinion. The way people talked about all the books gave me completely different expectations. I wish people would say these are extremely fluffy romances, so when I was reading I wouldn’t be expecting more and get disappointed. So thank you Steph for talking about that.
I wholeheartedly agree. I stopped after Book 2. Book 3 put me in a slump. I think the characters love one another and care for each other but it's kind of difficult to believe in this deep love the author wants us to when they all read the same if you remove their names and they don't delve deeply into emotional things once the romance/sleeping together starts. Things also seem so rushed. I wanted to like the third but couldn't get passed the 60-page mark. It almost mostly reads like books in which characters can't get over their hormones long enough to connect deeply with sprinkles of heartfelt stuff. I also don't like that the guys kind of take over the spicy scenes. The girls are portrayed as bold and feisty and it's almost like that goes away once the scenes start. Also, like Steph said, they're very two-dimensional with the same two character traits mentioned again and again.

So I completely agree on Hopeless! When I initially read the book, I finished it super fast simply because I adore the world and the characters so I gave it 5⭐️. However, I then found I was thinking about it way too often in the sense that I felt like there were things missing and information we didn’t get and I completely lost the satisfaction for the series ending if that makes sense. So then bumped it down to 4⭐️ and i don’t know, it could go lower. Like I totally adore the series and would recommend to anyone, but but like Cade and Willa and Theo and Winter have my heart. Their books were top tier for me 🫶🏼
I completely agree with you on all your thoughts about Wildfire! Caught Up fell just a little bit flat for me because of how forward and flirty the characters were from the start I think it broke the tension too early and it’s my least favorite in the series so far. I liked Hopeless, but I had no expectations going in because Beau isn’t one of my favorite characters, so it ended up being probably my second to last favorite in the series. I’m so excited though for future books in these series and Elsie Silver’s new series, and I loved hearing all your thoughts! 💞
Steph I agree with everything you said about Hopeless, sadly I was really bored once I hit 46%. I feel like there was no plot. Overall I was pretty disappointed 😞 it really did have so much potential! Imagine the author had tied in some drama about her brothers. Like they got her into legal trouble and thats why he proposed the bet!

hannah grace said the books will alternate between summer and hockey season which makes since cause the next book will be henry’s and that’ll be during hockey season so we’ll get to see him as the captain. since Russ wasn’t one of the “main” hockey guys it kinda makes since that his story is set during summer cause the readers probably don’t mind not getting all the hockey vibes for his story
I feel you. I really hate that a lot of the books I pick up these days with all the reviews saying "slow burn" only to have them get together like within 50% of the book. That's not slow burn. That's literally regular stuff. If it happens earlier, that's probably just erotica lollol. But I want a good loong slow burn where we get cute banters every chapter and slowly, very slowly see them start to think about the love ineterest, then slowly start to think differently in a more romantic way, and so on. Before finally around 85-90% is when they finally just get together.
Hope you read once upon a broken heart by stephanie garber. I know you’re getting into fantasy and that trilogy is the best to start with since it doesn’t bore you with world building plus the romance is so good especially if you like enemies to lovers and ✨tension✨

the one thing i really enjoyed about icebreaker was that there was no third act breakup which was genuinely so lovely, them being cutesy for the majority of the book pissed me off but omg, i am so glad that henry's book is the third book!!

Willa’s brother gets a book but it’s her new series in the same world I believe. Hopeless was the worse one for me. I struggled getting through it

im so happy someone else has the same thoughts as me with hopeless. i feel like the book was rushed , this was my least favourite i think. there were talks of him having issues with alcohol due to his 'ptsd' but there was barely any sign of that either she started giving him tea and he didn't have another drink again like it was just unrealistic. i liked the character seperate, but as for the plot and the relation it was mehhh, hate to say it because i loved the rest of the series.

In the first draft of the book, Elsie wrote that Beau was lost because he went back to save a *translator*, but she changed it in the final version to a journalist.
Most likely, she received backlash from readers because in real life, neither the USA nor Canada ever went back for the translators they left behind in Afghanistan. Her writing that one did, even if it was fictional, may imply to some that she is trying to make the military look better by creating a fake narrative. So that is why, I think, she didn’t dare to expand on what happened to him for fear of looking like a war propagandist.
If anyone wants a good ex-military hero with PTSD go for "love in the afternoon" the Hathaways #5 by Lisa kleypas. It's the best
