    Jay, About 7 years ago I made 4 of this type of chair from an old article in popular woodworking. Your design and instructions are much better. But, too late for me. I wanted you to know that my chairs do not have that brace on the lower part of the legs and they are still strong and wobble free, so I think you will find yours to be the same. These chairs are very comfortable.

    I've spent many, MANY, hours in one of these chairs watching my daughter's soccer games. It's super comfortable and way better than crappy fabric chairs that break all the time. It's been one of my favorite projects to date, and I've even sold a few to other soccer parents!
    I use my original template as my working template. If it mess them up, Jay gets more of my money! 🙃

    Great video Jay. I bought the template a year ago with the thought of making a chair for me in my shop. It served me well in the evenings after working in the shop.
    Little did I know that my wife Michelle had other plans for my chair… she made it HER chair.

    Jay, I purchased your set of templates and have made four nesting chairs: one out of pine, one of plywood and two from hardwood. Everyone loves them and think that they are very interesting and comfortable. They are all well-loved and work great. I've literally spent countless hours reading in my nesting chair this past summer. Thanks for the plans and template!

      @TheRPhelps24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you incorporate the cross brace in the bottom piece?

    • @gpdoyon
      @gpdoyon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRPhelps24 I did for all of my chairs. Like Jay said, it's the hardest part of the chair but it gives a nice accent/look to the chair. My only "problem" with all versions of the chair (pine, plywood and oak) is that the point between the two halves of the chair meet and hold all of the weight tends to crush in. So, if you stain the wood a dark color (or paint it!) it becomes very noticeable after a while. But, since the chair is in a stored/collapsed configuration most of the time it's not noticeable. Still, I love the chair!

    • @rjmills126
      @rjmills126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like the bottom would be uncomfortable. Is it really that comfy?

    • @gpdoyon
      @gpdoyon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rjmills126 Actually, it is very comfortable. I have literally spent six hours at a time on these chairs during the weekend, sitting outside to read. I've never felt uncomfortable.
      However, if you want to you could always get a couple of those outdoor seat cushions for your chair.
      I've made five of these chairs so far. Everyone loves them.

    I bought your templates when they were first available. I made four chairs for me from Western Red Cedar and finished them with a teak oil and spar urethane blend. I made two more sets from White Oak, finished with an oil/wax, for my 2 kids after they saw mine. I'll never buy another set of plans or templates ever again. I'm approaching 70 years old and that was more work from my "hobby" than I wanted! lol (just kidding) But my gf is thinking about new chairs with hard maple for the legs and walnut for the slats. I told her to go to....the shop and make them herself. lol
    Edit: Thumbs up for the Ted Alexander hat! Ted's a good friend of mine and I miss his TH-cam channel!

    The Daddy-Daughter clips made my heart melt. What a little sweetheart she is! The fact you can grill meat on that fire pit edge scares the life out of me. That edge gets SO hot, have you considered fabricating a wooden surround to buffer little hands away from the fire pit edge? One touch of a tiny hand will produce 2nd or 3rd degree burns! Yikes! Oh yeah, the chairs are awesome!

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      You'll see a lot of these in built-in designs. This is done for both looks and also to prevent people from touching it. However, I don't have any wooden surrounds or deterrents from keeping my daughter from touching our hot kitchen stove either. We have rules in place and she understands boundaries. Education is the best prevention in my opinion. When the firepit is going we are all aware of the situation and continuously teaching her the dangers and why we stay away from the danger rather than just saying "don't touch!" And just like with the stove, we don't leave the fire unattended in the event that she tries to see what she can get away with.

    can the cross brace (the one you left out to test) be a half-lap joint ? that would keep the language of design the same with the slats.. thoughts?

    • @JayBates

      Yes. However, a half lap joint would be a reduction in frame piece width. I honestly don't think it's necessary at all.

      @bobd. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I built a half lap design similar to this years ago with the frame cut from 2x8 cedar. While they are still in service and I have planted my 200# butt in them more than once I don't trust them for loads much over 200# because I feel the half lap is a weak point.

  • @Samtagri

    So each piece of wood was only big enough for one side piece (with a lot of waste). Would it have been possible to glue the wood together then cut nested side pieces? Then you can utilize the wasted wood better. And since you are gluing edge grain it should be plenty strong. Or am I missing something? Of course the grain pattern will be different. Is that it?

      Absolutely. Gluing a panel will be the best use of material. The offcuts here went into the cutting board stack.

    Jay, i just purchased your MDF templates, love the design. In this video you are using 1 screw on each side of the slat. On your website where you purchase the templates, that shows 2 screws per each side of the slat. Do you think 1 screw will be adequate? Or 2?

      I think one screw is fine. Considering the joint is somewhat mechanical restricting movement in and twisting and then is secured with glue and then pinned with a screw...I don't think there will be an issue with using one screw per slat.

    I noticed that you use one screw in each end of the slats vs two in your older video. Did you find out that one was strong enough or was it easier with one? Or mixture of both? I plan on making several sets of these and I just was wondering. I'm a big guy so your design will definitely be put to the test! I'll keep you posted when I get the templates, which shipped amazingly fast btw!!

      I think 2 was overkill originally.

    Have you tested or considered max weight for these? I'm a bigger guy, 6'8" and 240#, I've messed with other chair builds and outside of the beefier build of an Adirondack and not been comfortable with the ability to support higher weights. In particular there is going to be a lot of stress on the cross members where the seat goes through the back.

      The frame pieces are the only concern as they will take the worst of the forces. Slats will better disperse the weight amongst many slats. For that reason it's best to avoid any defects and knots in the frame pieces so they are as solid as possible. A solid hardwood frame will be stronger than a solid soft wood frame like pine. A solid soft wood frame will be stronger than a soft wood plywood, due to half of the plys going in the weak direction. We put over 400 pounds on a pine plywood version to test it with no signs of cracking or failure.

      @@JayBates Maybe the concern is that 300 plus pound people don't sit down very gently and people are assuming you placed the weight a little at a time and gently.

      I have made several of these using Jay's template. Some out of cedar. Some pine and a couple out of Royal Trim Board (PVC board) which is manufactured for looks and not strength. But man is it light and completely waterproof. It also paints well. Anyhow they all held up to me with no problem 6' 2" at 270 pounds. One CON for the PVC board is that it creates an awful mess. So much so that I will not make anything out of it again but will use it for exterior trim always.

    I think I would feel better about the longevity of the chair woth a bottom brace in. The slight racking of a person sitting on it will put quite a bit of strain on the one screw and glue joint in the slats on the other end. I've had single screwed slats come loose over years of use on far more rigid designs than this.

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. I'm confident in their strength and construction. Time will tell :)

      @@JayBates Indeed, a harmless experiment, at most you'll have to tighten down the slats a bit. My furniture was exposed to the elements for most of the year, under cover they'll have an easier time probably.
