      Your father was one of my favorite guitar players and a sweetheart always. The first time I saw him play, at Yoshi's in Oakland, California, I was sitting at a table right in front of him on stage. He had ne mesmerized. I was fortunate to spend some time around him. Always a treat.

      I truly enjoyed reading about Howlin’ Wolf and your father’s relationship and adventures on the road in the Howlin’ Wolf autobiography. From there, I’ve become such a life long fan of their work both together and individually!
      Did your father ever have a biography? Or some type of documentary that was made about him? I’d love to add them to my reading lists if any are available.

      Hubert Sumlin was one of the greatest guitar players to ever live. There should be hundreds of comments on this thread. The great Howlin Wolf and your dad along with Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williams were "THE" Rock Stars to Everybody's favorite Rockstars from The Beatles to Led Zeplin, The Rolling Stones and even Jimi Hendrix. Your fathers and Howlin Wolf's music will live forever!

      One thing I've noticed [that's interesting to me, tho' somewhat lost to time] is that on a lot of these TV shows, when the host (understandably) gravitates to Mick for the interview segment, Brian insinuates his way (uninvited) into the conversation. I may be reading more into this than warranted, but to me it has always seemed a manifestation of the fact that BJ sensed that he was losing his status as groupleader [to Mick] [which of course he was], and didn't want to allow himself to be sidelined in the public eye as just another member of Mick's backing band.
      cf. Mike Douglas show appearance for another example: MD is talking to Mick, and up sidles Brian.
      Just a thot . . .

      Listen to Sam Phillips: Sam Phillips, on his first meeting with Howlin' Wolf, was bowled over. "When I heard him, I said, 'This is for me. This is where the soul of man never dies'. He was about six foot six, with the biggest feet I've ever seen on a human being. Big Foot Chester is one name they used to call him. He would sit there with those feet planted wide apart, playing nothing but the French harp, and I tell you, the greatest show you could see today would be Chester Burnett doing one of those sessions in my studio. God, what would it be worth to see the fervor in that man's face when he sang. His eyes would light up and you'd see the veins on his neck, and buddy, there was nothing on his mind but that song. He sang with his damn soul."

    Someone was wondering who was in the band here besides Billy Preston on piano and James Burton on guitar. It was Larry Knechtel on bass and Mickey Conway on drums. I interviewed them about this after Carol Kaye suggested that's who it was, and they both remembered this show. Knechtel and Conway were very busy session men in the 1960s and 1970s. Knechtel also played piano and won a Grammy for playing piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for Simon and Garfunkel. Conway played on countless sessions, and he was one of the only black, left-handed drummers in the studio business at the time. He was a hell of a drummer, as you can hear here!

    From AllMusic: At the height of the British Invasion, the Stones came to America in 1965 for an appearance on ABC-TV's rock music show, Shindig. Their main stipulation for appearing on the program was that Howlin' Wolf would be their special guest. With the Stones sitting worshipfully at his feet, the Wolf performed a storming version of "How Many More Years," being seen on his network-TV debut by an audience of a few million. Wolf never forgot the respect the Stones paid him, and he spoke of them highly right up to his final days.
    From Blues and Music News: Shindig was an American musical variety show which featured various musical acts including Sam Cooke, Sonny and Cher and Bo Diddley. The show debuted in September 1964 and ran through January 1966. Its fantastic house band included at various times James Burton, Leon Russell, Glen Campbell and Billy Preston. On this particular day of May 20, 1965, a relatively new act from England were scheduled to appear. They were called the Rolling Stones. The Stones requested that one of their idols be on the show with them. That man’s name was Chester Burnett, AKA the Howlin’ Wolf. In 1965, American television was very tame and strict. It needed something to shake its foundations a little, and to reveal to the public where Rock n Roll’s roots really were. Howlin’ Wolf did just that and then some. Wasting no time at all, Mr. Burnett grabbed us by the throat and greeted television watchers with “How many more years.” Wolf pointed his finger and shook around like nothing Americans had ever seen, all while teenagers and the Stones sat at his feet clapping and egging him on. It was simply amazing. It had been a long road for Howlin’ Wolf. From his early days of recording in Memphis’s Sun Studios to his legendary Chess recordings, Wolf was unique. On the one hand, he was a veteran. Already a seasoned performer, he had played everywhere and anywhere imaginable. He had already proved himself several times over. On the other hand, he was about to be exposed to a huge part of America who had never witnessed anything like what he had to offer. It was as if he was a new artist, debuting for the first time. Wolf already had an audience of his own that followed his work and knew him well. After his Shindig performance however, this new audience started to seek him out as well. This lead to new recording projects specifically aimed at this market (the London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions), and Wolf started to notice suburban youths at his shows in the Chicago clubs where he regularly performed.

    Yeah, he's so happy and right out PROUD!! Really, really sweet to see Brian Jones so truly exited, he just can't hide behind his cool when one of his heroes is about to appear. And then enter The Wolf, just filling the whole room, no space left for breathing, no prisoners taken. He certainly was something else as well!! But WHO is that guy on the guitar - he certainly knows where to fill in!!

      As addressed elsewhere in these comments, Wolf’s being backed by the Shindig house band the Shindogs. They had at least a couple of guitarists at different times. It’s thought to be either James Burton or Delaney Bramlett. Whichever one it was, he did a crackerjack job.

    • @diddywahdaddy
      @diddywahdaddy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gidneyandcloyd Mark Hoffman: "Many people have wondered who was in the band here besides Billy Preston on piano and James Burton on guitar. It was Larry Knechtel on bass and Mickey Conway on drums. I interviewed them about this show, and they both remembered it fondly. Knechtel and Conway were very busy session men in the 1960s and 1970s. Knechtel also played piano and won a Grammy for playing the piano part on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for Simon and Garfunkel. Conway played on countless sessions. He was a hell of a drummer, as you can hear here! "
