I learned "Muddy Road" from a 1960s recording of Claude Wolfenbarger of Grainger County, Tennessee. This song is known by various titles, including "County Jail," "Fall On My Knees," and "Lonesome Road." The A part melody is the same as "Willie Moore."
My instrument is a traditional gourd banjo handmade by myself. My tuning is dADF♯A ~ gDGBD.

can you make some of the octagonal/hexagonal wood-top mountain banjos? I have seen pictures of them from isolated mountain communities along with other mountain instruments like mountain dulcimer, diddly bow/pickin' stick/'canjo', and cigar box guitar.
I make them sometimes: th-cam.com/video/bFM0loU2c1A/w-d-xo.html
The lyrics for anyone wanting them:
The longest day I ever saw
Was the day I left my home,
I walked that porch from post to post
Hung down my head and cried.
Look up look down this long muddy road
Hang down your head and cry.
The best of friends must part sometimes,
Honey why must you and I.
Don't you see that little turtle dove
As he flies from pine to pine,
He's mourning for his own true love
Just like I mourn for mine.
Edit: Missed a part in the middle :]
Many many thanks. Lovely song and rendered very real...thank you
I thought it said Hog instead of Home lol
Man great song. Reminiscing on my marriage of 23 years to beautiful wife who has been by far the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thanks Cliff
Since it is fretless, how do you get the right chords? Do you just guess? Do you have it memorized? Or do you make it up as you go and just do whatever sounds good?
All of the above.
Thanks Clifton for everything you do in this great tune. I really appreciate it. I actually appreciate everything you do in ways. I can’t even express there are new actions just pure thanks.
Amazing sound✨The best TH-cam channel for banjo's and life lessons on the internet. Congrats, Clifton!
Your voice is very distinguished; graceful and perfect.
How can I come to posses one of these gourd banjos?
This one is for sale. I will mail anywhere in U.S. for $600, shipping and insurance included. clifhicks@gmail.com
The color scheme on that instrument is fantastic , especially love the neck and peg heads deep rich look. Ever try wetting the wood with water to raise the grain a bit before staining it ? Takes some extra time but the end result is pretty cool.
Yes, I always wet the wood to raise the "fur" of the grain during final sanding process before oiling. No stain on that neck; that is just oiled black walnut.
Beautiful song I think I’ll learn this one I like traditional style songs but that banjo is awesome especially since you just made it
you need to be a music teacher !!!
Hello there, Mr. Hicks. Thank you for making all these great videos and sharing all of your knowledge with us. Words will never be able to describe how much I appreciate it. I was just wondering though if you might have any physical records out there for sale anywhere?
How much do I need to pay for one of these please send lol I’m only in Florida
$600, shipping and insurance included. clifhicks@gmail.com

Songs from the past. You Sir are doing them Justice.
Love that song, I like to learn to play that tune, please.
Tab available at Patreon.com/CliftonHicks
Hi, I was wondering what mic you were using in this video. I find it hard to capture the bassier side of gourd banjo without it sounding thing.
Nice sounding banjo 🪕 is it one you’ve just made?
Have same shirt unfershirt and hat. But still can't play so well.
nice
love that old sound. does resting your fingers on the skin mess it up though?
Cool to hear that flatt and scruggs borrowed a verse from this for Good Times Are Past And Gone
Where do you go to find old songs like this?
Check out Digital Library of Georgia and Digital Library of Appalachia.
Eating butternut squash while I watch. lol
nice
Id love to see minstrel style being played on some of these banjos ,
Makes me think of the wife who left me 7 years ago, after 17 years together...life can be a very muddy road indeed...
Ain't it? Ten and thirteen for me but I still dream about her.
@@punishedmatteson7108 Same here, been dreamin about her and I live in a world of regret. Havent been with anyone since.
Simps
Bravo good Sir. 🎃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💀💀💀. BRAVO
You been dyein your granmammys hair with those hands?
My favorite of yours, Cliff. Gets me deep in some way beyond sad or happy.
Hi clifton, that's a great sound you got there. On the video of o'death how is your banjo tuned? i'ts a great song. Do you have any tablature of o'death, it would be great.
Live in France. Thanks
Thanks for writing. Tab for O Death is available at patreon.com/cliftonhicks
Clifton, you must have a magic banjo. I Surely believe that you appear younger with each video.
I have consumed a low fat, high fiber, plant based diet since 2016. I highly recommend this diet.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo no meat?
@@blllllllllllllllllllrlrlrl7059 Six months ago I ate a piece of deer jerky.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo glad that works for you.
@@Invictus13666 certain diets work for certain people.
Lol cool song but please scrub them nails
Clifton is a national treasure.
The Banjos all have their own unique personality and Sound ♥️👍👍👏
Well, there is one banjo that isn't unique. It sounds like all the others. The problem is figuring out which one it is.
well hell, it's a gourdjo
Awesome song to garden to
is Mr. Hicks goin grey??? lol
Very nice sir thank you.
Very nice sir thank you.
This one is really nice but really makes me depressed. I like the line walk post to post. I like it better than I’ve been “coast to coast” many hours walking the floor
Currently sitting alone… smoking Reefer… listening to this song… thinking how I thought world war three would be faster.
Kinda like how WW2 started in the '30s but we only think of 1941 to '45.
F’real@@CliftonHicksbanjo World Wars are slow… The pieces all seem in place… I got the World War Three Blues, I guess. I’m gonna increase my Reefer intake and watch some Dr. Ralph AFTER some Clifton Hicks, of course. Join me on the banks of the Withlacoochie River anytime, bruddy. Good smoke is always on me.
Awesome
I'm utterly impressed with the neutral leading tone/fourth mix. It reminds me of certain types of bagpipes.
Was that a bed pan ?
Excellent
Sick!!!!!!
Cool
Very nice Cliff. Ever play an old banjo ukulele? I restored years ago for a friend it’s an interesting instrument.
No tacks on the head? I don't recall seeing that before. How do you manage that?
Here's how I attach the head: th-cam.com/video/XEf5tyGii10/w-d-xo.html
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Thank you!
great tune pard *LIKED* and *SUBSCRIBED*
Captivating. Absolutely from the heart. 🪕🇬🇧
I play a gourd too but it ain’t nuthin without a voice like this!
Loved it!
Is that from this year's gourds Clifton?
It sounds great man!
This is an older gourd. It takes about one year for a gourd to harden.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo That makes sense. Thank you for responding, I love your videos!
krass !
Wonder skill. Great heritage brought to life.
I'm relaxed and kicked back in the light fall breeze listening to banjo magic!!! 🌞😊
when friends meet its pleasure, but when they part it's pain
Such a cool instrument! Beautiful song
So beautiful. Love every aspect of this video♡♧♡
what materials are the strings?
La Bella nylon strings.
You using gut strings on that?
Nylons from www.labella.com/
Those types of banjo 🪕 must be rare
You do know that Clif makes these gourd banjos, right?
what strings do you use?
I use custom sets from La Bella Strings. I recommend starting with La Bella No. 17 nylon.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Thank you.
Sounds good ,buddy, "love the new banjo "
Very good thanks!
Stay pure. ❤
Fuck yeah, that banjo is angelic
nicely play
very nice gourd banjo
Excellent Mr. Hicks 👍🏻🌞
A really beautiful tune and banjo, I've gotta make another fretless banjo. My last one was a bit of a Frankenstein!
Since it is fretless, how do you get the right chords? Do you just guess? Do you have it memorized? Or do you make it up as you go and just do whatever sounds good?
@@-jank-willson It's mostly just a case of muscle memory and practice, although it's not very common to use chords on fretless anyway.
Never herd this one before =]
Calming.
Fantastic
Respect.
Beauty!
There is no better setup for the tune! Love the sound of gourd banjo and the most authentic voice
That tune is very familiar. What other song uses it?
I hear Willie Moore in there
@@Matt-oe8el yes, you're it right it is. But I think it might be a English folk tune too. But i just can't recall it.
Wow! That sounds great, and it really amplifies your string bending..like nothing I've heard before. 😗🤌♥️ The lyrics go nicely with a rough arse week too. I hope you and yours are doing well brother man.
Showin’ off the what’s to come with those freshly picked gourds!!!
Touches the soul.
My God this is amazing
That sounds so much better than the traditional banjo. Deeper and richer.
This is the first video I've seen of you without the mask, I was like "hey that's the guy with the mask!!!" It's the eyes! Isn't it crazy how our eyes work and how we interpret facial recognition?!?
that sounds so nice
Very good 👍
Epic, Cliff. Well done... so appreciate your music
@@CliftonHicksbanjo thank you for doing that, we are brother's under the skin ❤️
I love that gourd banjo's muddy sound.
Love how you can see that he can fell the music
this is real as it gets unfortunately
I sure wish I could learn two finger style. I'm a new banjo beginner and I think that's my favorite sounding style for sure.
Well played my friend! You know this song reminds me of a Beatles song from Rubber Soul. Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown). God Bless you and yours for still being the real Army Man. Being real with veterans. Keep doing what you're doing bro!
Nice instrument, cool song and great style
I am without words this is just the most spectacular thing I heard all night thank you very much you are a very talented person and I actually am enamored with that music
I really always love listening to you play. You are the sole reason I’ve started playing banjo myself. I love how you make the songs so real, I feel like I’m in the story of the song.
Thank you for posting this. I really enjoy it
Nice. Banjer sounds really really great!
Fantastic!
My grandmother was from Grainger County. Deep roots there.
Mr Hicks, if you wouldn’t mind, a lesson on this beaut would be appreciated. Wonderfully sound as always. God bless.
This is awesome i love this kind of music i'm a fan of old music bluegrass / old country i just wish more people today liked this type of music but sadly not the good ole days are gone but not forgotten.
Such an amazing and haunting song. Thank you.
