  • When talking about the future, native English speakers don’t always use the word “future” in everyday spoken English! The adverb “ahead” can replace this word in several situations, and in today’s video, I explain how we use this word so you can start it using it more yourself. I hope you find it helpful! 😊
Before listing the uses of “ahead” that I talk about in today’s video, here’s a quick recap of the basic meanings of this word:
🔸 If something is ahead of you, that means that it’s physically in front of you: The cars ahead of us were moving really slowly. / He was ahead of me in line.
(Note: “in front of” is often used to say that this thing or person is close to you, while “ahead” just means that they’re just in a more forward physical position than you, so they could be close to you or far away from you)
🔸 In the future: We have a lot of work to do in the weeks ahead.
Now, let’s take a look at the uses of this word that I talk about in today’s video:
    1. We can put “ahead” after certain verbs to say that we’re doing something related to the future; examples include plan ahead, think ahead, and look ahead:
It’s important to plan ahead when organizing a big event like a wedding.
    2. ahead of time = a more informal way to say “in advance” (= before a certain time in the future):
It’s always a good idea to get to the airport a couple of hours ahead of time.
    3. If one country is ahead of another by a certain amount of time, that means that it’s further forward in time than the other country:
Japan is thirteen hours ahead of the United States.
    4. If we have something ahead of us, that means that we have to deal with something in the future:
She has a long road to recovery ahead of her.
    5. To be/get ahead of the game = to be in an advantageous position because of extra work you’ve done:
I stayed up late working on the project last night to get ahead of the game.
Now, practice these uses of “ahead” in the comments!
