    Bought a chevy custom 2.7 a year ago. I have 17000 miles on it now, average 21 miles mpg. I pull a 2000 lb trailer with it. I drive alot on hilly terrain, the truck does every I need it to do. At cruise speed can't tell from a 5.3. I'm VERY satisfied with truck and 2.7 motor.

  • @donjohnson2428
    @donjohnson2428 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Yesterday I test drove a Silverado with the 2.7 and then one with a 5.3 immediately after. I went into it 100% expecting to like the V8 more, but I honestly thought the 2.7 was better. It was noticeably quicker getting up to speed and was definitely way more responsive. The only thing that was better about the 5.3 was the sound, but even then the 2.7 sounds good in its own way with the turbo whistle. It spools up quickly and is more audible than other turbocharged 4 cylinder vehicles I’ve driven. It’s not the V8 rumble we all know and love but I still liked it.
    So, consider me a believer in this powertrain now. For someone like me who needs a truck to throw a dirtbike or a bunch of dead deer in the bed depending on the season, the 2.7 is a no brainer when you factor in how much money you save on the front end over the 5.3 and some of the incentives Chevy is offering.
    The boomers in the comments will surely come and make comments about how their uncle’s brother’s friend who was a mechanic in the 80s said turbos were unreliable, don’t belong in a full sized truck, etc etc… but if you do your homework and check out the videos of Kevin Luchansky (who was one of the chief engineers of the 2.7) going into detail about how this engine was developed and tested, you’d see this thing is a marvel of modern engineering. It’s a purpose built engine and was designed specifically for truck use. It is 100% worthy of being in a 1500.
    It blows me away how many people will scoff at new technology that is objectively superior in all of the major performance categories and costs less just because it challenges their preconceived notions. Then again, that’s the entire boomer mindset - out of touch and stuck in their ways!

      It gets the same mileage as the v8 , has less power for pulling a trailer so will get even less when pulling a trailer, also it’s a known fact that engines with turbos use more oil than non turbo models, been working on , and doing maintenance on vehicles for 30 years , I would not recommend buying a 4cylinder truck

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@timradke7775 Nope. I know from experience, having owned both engines, that the 2.7 does 3-4 mpg better than the 5.3 in real world, depending on how you drive. What you are expressing is based on BS internet rhetoric, not reality.

    I just purchased the same truck 6 weeks ago. I'm impressed with the power. What sold me was the incentives, I got about a 8,500 rebate by getting the 4 Cylinder. Even though the fuel economy is the same as the 8 Cylinder, the rebate made up for that. The power seemed to go up a little when I hit 1500 miles. My one complaint is the sound! ( It sounds like my daughters Fiesta) Hope fully the reliability is there.

    Where this truck beats the v8 is at the gas pump and on long trips. Stop and go you get around 17. Took a 400 mile trip recently, got 29 mpg. That tank of gas went 550 miles before needing fuel. The best the v8 I had did was 425 miles and 24 mpg. Once you figure out how to drive the turbo, you don't miss the v8 at all. Fuel savings is about a $100 a month over the v8

    2023 5.3 Silverado LTZ Z71, live in Colorado, getting 17-19 in city and 22-25 on highway. Drove the 4cyl, it has great punch when the turbos spool up, turbo lag wasn’t bad. IMO it’s a great base engine and definitely comparable to the 5.3L. I would’ve got it but it’s not available on high trims.

    My last 2 trucks were 5.3’s. Just bought a 2024 sierra with the 2.7. I’m happy with the power and love the sound of the turbo spooling up! I always kept the factory exhaust on my V8’s so the lack of rumble doesn’t bother me. These 4 bangers will definitely not appeal to everyone but certainly suits me and my use for a truck perfectly.

    I bought the LT2 Turbomax in 22 with the Allstar package 23 refresh. I just hit 50k and it's been absolutely flawless in every way. The gas mileage sucks, but I didn't buy it for that reason. I will say the fuel economy of the 5.3 is awesome when towing compared to a ram. We took a fishing trip to Canada this past summer with both trucks hauling a similar sized boat and the 5.3 was hands down more efficient on the 13 hour journey. The driver of the ram couldn't believe how bad his gas mileage was compared to ours. Ive been putting a lot of thought into the turbomax. Still waiting for incentives to bring price back to Earth. If we fould get to about $38000, I'd likely pull thr trigger. Until then my paid off vehicles look beautiful

  • @chrislowe4310

    When I first thought of a 22 Silverado I did consider the 2.7 after having owned two 5.3's. After researching the fuel economy figures I started to have doubts. In Canada the 5.3 at the time was about $2k over the 2.7 and about $2.7k for the 3.0. I don't tow anything big so in theory the 2.7 would probably fit my needs. Guess what changed my mind was the 8 speed transmission and the unknown of what the trade in value of a 2.7 would be down the road. There is still the stigma I think of a 4 cyl in a full size truck. In the end I ordered a 23 and decided on the 3.0. Biased of course after owing it for 9 months now but I think the Duramax is the best powertrain in a full size truck today, has all the torque that you would need and the fuel economy is phenomenal for a half ton truck.

    GM says it can run fine on 87. It probably will run better on 93 and get better mileage than the 5.3, IDK. Is it enough of an offset on cost? I'm looking at the '24 Acadia it's getting the 2.5 version of the 2.7. Like Ford and Toyota, they tossed the six in favor of a turbo in their SUV's. Now you got Nissan and Chrysler is going to a twin turbo six replacing the V8. It's not the mileage, it's the new emissions mandate. You have better flexibility with a turbo nowadays. They burn a lot cleaner.

    Price and mpg being equal, the N/A engine will outlast the turbo. The turbo will eventually fail and repair costs will be expensive, extra heat, and pressure on the internal will kill the longevity for a $55k 4cyl truck.
    I looked at the 2024 2500HD Pro Crew Cab 4wd with the 6.6L and Allison 10-speed for $54k, so why would i ever buy a 1500 for the same money and fuel economy with less towing capability, no plowing, and less longevity?

    I know a 4 cylinder truck is weird. But if you compare numbers to older 8 cylinder trucks, these usually outperform trucks from even a few years ago.
