    Thanks Chris, these are really useful tips. I am trying to grow them for the first time, primarily to use them in a Serbian dish called ajvar. Loads of meaty red pepper plants too. 👍🏻

    I live in wales
    My aubergines, started 6 weeks are growing so slowly, due to no sun, no heat really[they were in a room]
    Now i m putting them outside still in a barquette, but heat will hopefully get them to grow

    Hi Chris (I believe?), I live in NE Scotland and having decided to start growing a lot more of my veg (something I haven't done in about 25yrs due to lack of space and time) I decided to give aubergines a try and purchased three grafted plants, Scorpio. Only now have I leart just how much heat and sun they require! I have to move them between my greenhouse and my conservatory, which are at opposite ends of my plot :( , as the greenhouse is not warm enough at night and sometimes not during the day. I learnt that they drop their flowers if the temperature gets below 10 deg and all three plants have lost one flower each. I have gradually moved them up to 30cm diameter, 25cm deep pots and they have reached 60cm in height (I pinched the growing tips out at 40cm?) and have loads of flower buds which are just beginning to open.
    QUESTIONS; some flower stalks have one bud, others have two. Should I remove one where there are two? Also do I start removing leaves at this stage and start feeding or wait until the fruit sets? Do I restrict the number of fruits per plant? I try to mist twice a day but should I manually polinate as they are inside?
    We cook with aubergines often so I would love to make a success of this, however, for all the fruit I am likely to get, if any, it's going to be an arduous and costly process growing here in the NE without a heated greenhouse as the conservatory doesn't get the sun until very late morning, when we get sun! At about 80 pence per fruit from Aldi I'll have the personal satisfaction and freshness of growing my own but at considerably more cost! :(
    Thanks for the video.
    Mike

      Have read your comment (posted a year ago) with interest Mike. Just realised you are in NE Scotland, which I can see might cause you problems warmth-wise for your aubergines. (I’m in North Wales). Anyway, the thing that has impressed me is that you have a decent amount of flowers on your plants, so good on you for that! That was where you left it, but hopefully you have managed to convert those flowers to fruit! Hope so anyway. Please could you update all of us who have been interested to read your comment. 😀

      W Danowel Im based in Ipswich, Suffolk, and all my warm season crops like aubergine, peppers, chillis and watermelon are planted out about middle of May. Give or take a couple of weeks depending on the weather. I usually always plant them initially under horticultural fleece for them to get established for a few weeks.👍🏻

      @@gotropicaluk8362 Great, Thank you very much. I`m in London, so that would apply very much to me too. I`ve got a little laughable problem right now. Because I was so eager to starts all seedlings on time this year I`ve already relatively big plants, especially tomato plants - some of them 12 inches tall. I might have red tomatoes to eat by the time I should take them outside. Any idea how to stunt them? haha

    Glad to see you growing aubergines, I grow czech early. They are prolific and because the fruits produced are smaller, once I attach the starts of the sideshoots, the plants can hold the weights of the fruits up right. 12 is more than enough for a family of 4. They grew to 18x18 inches, almost as big as my tomatoes (just not as tall).

    I tried aubergines for the first time this year. They were growing really well but no fruits had formed. The plants are looking a bit worse for wear now and still nothing in the way of aubergines. Do you need to pollinate by hand maybe?

    I kept mine indoors for a while and they got spider mite on them. I treated them with soapy water which cured the problem but it comes back when they get dry. Outside or in a greenhouse is best. They seem to need air circulation as has been mentioned on the TH-cam above.

The word itself is actually Arabic... so who knows its origin, all I know it's a great dish. And yes using them as lasagna sheets works really well to! Regards. Chris

    Hi, This is my first year of growing anything in a greenhouse. I sowed some Black Beauty Aubergines from seed and have grown quite good so far. I'll be growing in the greenhouse as I'm in the North East of England. I'm potting it into a 40cm deep planter pot. I've been told they attract white fly like magnets..Is this true as I have Toms and Peppers growing also.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Beth Banderton I’ve not had a problem with white fly growing them outside, maybe because they’re always after my romanesco! but the best way to prevent it in a greenhouse is to have some french marigold plants amongst your peppers, tomatoes and aubergines. They do a great job of keeping aphids and white fly away, rather than getting into using sprays on anything. All the best with your aubergines! Regards Chris

    I live in the south-west, lots of rain falls. My Aubergines have been growing for 3 weeks but they are growing SLOOOWWWW. I fed them with some fertiliser yesterday and managed to kill one of them... I don't know what to do anymore.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wenkai Zhang I assume these are in a greenhouse still at the moment? If you started them in normal potting soil, as seedlings you shouldn’t need to fertilise them until you plant them out in the field or in their final container. The soil outside is still to cold at the moment for planting out. Even tho air temps are warming up, the soil for plants like peppers, aubergines and tomato’s is still to cold, and they will just sit there if you do. I usually plant them out in Suffolk around the end of may. All the best.

    • @genericuser2339
      @genericuser2339 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you get flowers? If so then the problem is likely to be lack of germination. You can do this manually with a small paint brush when the flowers form. I believe it's called "setting". If the flower doesn't get germinated then it's not done its job and the aubergine won't get going.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think pollination is the problem, sometimes the growing conditions can have an effect on fruit set. They need plenty of warmth, and moisture, so if the weather is on the cool side, fruit set may be a bit hit and miss. If you wanted to be really certain they are getting pollinated you could brush the flowers with a small paintbrush? I tend to find with having a number of aubergine plants in one area pollination is pretty good. Where are you based? Chris
