Turns out I've been relying too much on the weak fabric around holes, in high stress areas, and didn't even realize it--explains why my mending hasn't been successful. Thank you for the tip, I was ready to give up! Would not have figured it out on my own.
Hello! My apologies for the weird sound. I make these videos for Instagram and cross upload them to TH-cam for folks to watch on either platform. I have just listened to the video here on TH-cam and I see what you are saying. On Instagram the sound is even and normal but for whatever reason on TH-cam the sound levels have been warped. Next time I upload a video, I can keep and eye on this and make sure the sound levels are consistent. Thanks for letting me know!
What a lovely video with lots of great tips 🥰 I'm not sure the music was necessary though, at one point it was covering your nice voice. Thank you so much for sharing 🙏 greetings from France 🇨🇵🤗
Hi there. Your video just popped up in my TH-cam suggestions. This is exactly what I would love, love, love to watch. I absolutely agree with mending clothes and I’ve been doing it for decades. Your wonderful way of stitching is like the Japanese art of mending and it’s so fantastic. Thank you. However, because of a neurological condition, I am not able to listen to the human voice with any music overlaid. And this music was so loud, I started feeling dizzy and nauseous. 😢 I’m devastated because if there was no music on your videos, I would subscribe and watch all of them! You have the perfect voice for me to listen to - it’s gentle, calm and quiet. You’re a great teacher, your work is neat and fun, and I’m so sad I can’t watch any more. Please could I beg you to make videos with no music, especially dance type music with drum beats. Loads of people don’t like music with everything; and all adverts, dramas, documentaries etc. come, nowadays with really loud music that gets turned on and off. People will say mute your device, but then I miss the teaching and great advice. Also, I am partially disabled and live alone - hearing the human voice is wonderful and therapeutic when you’re lonely! Bless you ❤
I love visible mending, but I am so wary of doing it in places where I don't want to draw any extra attention! (like the inner thigh area) These are some great tips I'll be sure to keep in mind!
I’ve been charged with saving my husband’s favorite shirt. It would probably be easier to make another but this denim shirt is already soft and he really really likes it. I need to reattach part of the collar, add a patch to 1 elbow so I’m doing both, the cuffs, y’all get it. 😂 Anyway, this video was inspiring and so helpful. I went thru many searches to finally something helpful. Thanks so much
Just seeing the thumbnail made me wanna go out and find a ratty ol chair and visibly mend it! Your chair was sooooo much prettier after mending. Never thought to use a curved needle to sew on items u can't pick up and maneuver. The other day I was mending a hole in a mattress. If I'd used a curved needle instead of a straight one I wouldn't have slightly bent my needle.
the colour combination and patterns at 6:29 are so good, i'm tempted to try to copy it on clothes without holes. i love how there really is no clear line between mending and embroidering
This completely inspired me to repair my sweater with too many holes, I don't mind the holes, but they'll soon force me to retire it all together, unless I repair it! Everything I've seen in visible mending revolves around denim, woven fabrics, or darning knits. Any advice for fleece??
This is a great video - very helpful. I found it looking for sashiko repair of rear pocket edge rips (right down the edge of the pocket. Do you rip out the double sewn seam of the pocket and fold it back to make your repair? It looks like you might - looks like the patch goes under the pocket side seam. How do you sew the pocket seams in place again? The material is so thick that I'm afraid I won't be able to get my needle through.
It is a little tough to get through all of the pocket stitches when you put them back but it is not too hard if you use a patch that isn't too thick. I add both of the double stitching back but I promise it's not too hard! :)
If you machine sew the pocket back on...through 3 layers of denim, best to select a CJeans" needle, or a "Jeans/Leather" needle for safer machine repairs. Also, check the type of stitch you are choosing, if your are using an electronic machine. Usually those choices are: thin fabric, medium fabri , thick fabric, knit fabric or jeans/leather fabric.
Hi, Margot, thanks for your feedback. I am new to video making so the first couple that I made had sound levels that are inconsistent and at times too loud. I have gotten a whole lot of comments about this and worked out the sound issues in my more recent videos. Learning video editing programs is a huge learning curve and has taken a massive amount of time. I hope there is still something you can get from this video I made, it was a labor of love. ✌️
Hi, Your mending is very creative and innovative solutions and Why don't you make it a fashionable design for the customers who like this ? I like your work, Thanks and Regards
Oh yes - I'm rewatching your video I see how you folded the pocket back to put your patch. What sticking did you use to resew the pocket seam? Did you sew it back by hand? Thank you! Thanks for the video and the ideas!
Yep, sorry, I made this video when I was new to video making and the sound is messed up. Turning on captions is super helpful is the background music is too loud. My apologies!!! 😊🙏
Yes, this was one of the first couple videos I made and so the levels on the audio were messed up when I cross uploaded the video from IG. My apologies, I know it's a pain. All audio issues are fixed on more recent videos. :)
learned a lot, thanks! great idea to actually use patches on sweaters too. question though: do you use a thimble? and how to find a needle that goes through jeans? does it have to be large?
I do use a thimble, different thimbles for different projects. For heavy duty stitching I use a metal thimble, needle grabber silicone finger and thumb thimbles, and plyers if needed. For needles I use sashiko needles for big jobs. Hope that helps and happy mending! ☺️
Do you simply press the edges of your patches under or do you sew them so they won’t fray? Also, do you machine sew the patches in place first before doing the ‘visible’ part of the mending?
I just press and tuck the edges under. Fraying isn't a problem if your stitches are close to each other but if you want to make double sure there aren't any stray threads you can cut your patch with pinking shears which I do all the time. I don't use a sewing machine for my mends but if your mend is in an easily accessible area a sewing machine is a great option. Happy mending!
Incredible content and work. I would love to replicate this for a pair of jeans I have. Where do you buy your threads and patches? Or, where can I find the materials that you use? Also, what kinds of stitches do you use for the patches (as I see you press the patches and then fold them under)? I am a complete newb at this, and think this methodology is just brilliant. Thank you!
Hello! Everything I use in my videos is available in the SMT shop (link in vid description). I think the patches are sold out at the moment but will be back in the shop on Wednesday 9am est when the next shop update is posted. For the pants patching you can see exactly what kind of stitches I use in the SMT pants patching video, lots of details and close UPS in there. Hope that helps and happy mending!!!!
@@stuartmoorestextiles Thank you so much! I started yesterday on the patch with the whip stitch. Been watching your vids like crazy for ideas on the embroidery. Got a new subscriber and fan from me. :)
Yes, the volume is very messed up in this video. It was one of my first videos, way back when I did not know much at all about video editing. I think a few people have mentioned that it is possible to turn on subtitles and turn the volume way down. Hope there is still something of value for you in here, despite volume issues. If you missed something in particular, just let me know, happy to help if I can.
Hi, : Thanks for your feedback. I have only started making videos recently and am still working out the kinks. I have gotten a lot of comments about the audio and have tried to fix that in my videos that I am making now. The second part of the Swiss Darning video series has those problems fixed. Hope that helps.
@@stuartmoorestextiles oh, I don't mean delete this version. but if you would publish an updated version with less or no bgm, it looks like it would be helpful to me and a few other people here.

Hi Liz, thanks for your feedback. As mentioned above I made this video before I knew much about video editing. I have since made around 15 videos with improved audio levels. Hope one of those work for you.
Indeed it is. I made this video when I as very new to making videos and I didn't get the volume level quite worked out. A few people have mentioned though that you can turn on subtitles for the hard to hear bits. Hope that helps and hope you can still get some good info despite the sound issues. They are fixed on the more recent videos.
It is true that the music is too loud, I have gotten a lot of feedback in the comments about this. I was new to video making when I made this video and have since sharpened my video editing skills (I hope!). A few people have suggested turning on the captions and lowering the volume, hope that helps!
I really do not like music accompanying instructional videos of any kind. I have a hard enough time understanding people as it is because their sound is all coocoo most of the time. The music is distracting as well.
Hi Roxanna, I'm sorry to hear the music is annoying for you. I made these videos when I was brand new to video making so as many have pointed out the audio levels are too high. My apologies for this. I am learning to make videos better and have worked out the audio kinks in my latest video tutorials. I hope that helps and I hope the videos I am making now are easier to watch with the audio fixed.
Sorry about that, as mentioned I was new to video making when I published this video and didn't have audio leveling quite figured out. As a few others have mentioned in the comments, if you turn on subtitles and turn down the sound you can still get all the info. Hope that helps!
Hi Kate. It's true, the music is not well mixed in this video. Many people have pointed this out and I appreciate the feedback. As I have mentioned before, I was new to video making when I made this video so my skills were not where they are now with regard to video editing and mixing. There are many more videos I have made since that have better audio mixing. A few people have suggested putting the captions on and turning the volume down, perhaps you can try this?
