    I used a Dremel tool recently to polish every screw in an antique pump organ....polish all the metal bits on a treadle sewing machine, and also to carve an ornate piece of wood to replace a broken applique on a piece of furniture. It is one of the most versatile tools on the planet! If it's a smaller scale piece of work, there is almost nothing a dremel tool can't do! It's amazing!

      Hi Bill! I agree 100% This tool fills a void that no other tool can... It has saved me more times then any other tool! (like the vise grip!) =) Thanks!!!!!!!

    Have had a 395 3rd gen variable speed model for many years. The shaft flex coupler recently broke when using a lot of cutoff wheels on a project. Didn't even know they had one inside. Thanks to TH-cam, I discovered the issue and ordered a replacement coupler. You br video has inspired me to break out the Dremel and use it on some Easter projects. Thanks!

    You know the person posting the video is great at what they do when you already are more than familiar with the subject matter, yet you still sit there and enjoy every single moment of watching the video! I actually wore out the wrench that came with my original Dremel, so now I use my small plierench (learned about them from some guy on youtube!) instead. As always John, great job. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
    One thing I have also used a LOT with mt Dremel is the tiny metal circular saw blade. BTW, there is a guy somewhere here on youtube who makes his own cut off wheels using flattened bottle caps and bolts! Seem to work great.

    Hi and welcome to the History channel we love this a lot, tuned in to stay through to the end. While we have their latest we did switch to another brand (the green ones) due to not being made with bearings. We like your drill press, also your older tools are better in our opinion likely, then the new ones, you hold on to those we are thinking.

      Dremel does have a lot of attachments, but some of them (the original Dremel branded) are also awful. I have the 90 degree angle attachment and it makes a lot of grinding noise and heats up quickly. I even took it back to the store and they changed it to another one, but it is the same. I also have the model 670 rotary minisaw attachment, and it has a design defect where the spring loaded safety flap does not go deep enough, so that you cannot fully utilize the flat bottom of the saw. So although Dremel may be considered a quality brand, they do have some major fuck-ups in their devices. Another example is the Moto-saw (not an attachment but a complete reciprocating jigsaw). It is quite bad for cutting anything other than thin cardboard.

    Excellent introduction video! I didn't realize there was a Mr. Dremel! I love my home-made scotch-brite discs! I think those, the wire wheels and the polishing wheels are what I use the most for tool restorations! I just got some of those thicker cut-off wheels from HF. They seem more durable than the original thin brown ones.

      Hi N! You know there are so many different accessories that I could never cover them all! For example, the cut off wheels come in many different thicknesses and grits!!! I love that horizontal boring setup! It's so cool! I really should get myself some kind of rotary tool for small grinding wheels, so I can grind off hard spots that you can't cut with a file. I was disassembling a big Record No.114 vise that I bought locally here (great price!) and it had a really hard weld splatter on the back of the slide which wouldn't let me take it out. I bought one of those wheels you show at 2:13 and chucked it up in a big corded drill that went up to 3600 RPM. It got the job done very well but of course a small rotary tool would have been the ticket for that kind of work. I still have that small grinding wheel for a day like that. I have been thinking about getting a electric die grinder or straight shaft grinder instead of what you'd call a 'rotary tool', just to have something a little more heavy duty to use with small wire wheels as well. What do you think of those? Do you have one? Would you advise against one? Thanks for the video!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Aryan! The air Die grinders are awesome if you have a big air compressor. The Dremel tools are good because they are light and easy to handle but the bigger more powerful motors are nice for different uses. We have a line of rotary tools here made by Foredom that are worth looking into!! Thanks!!!!!!

    I really like my Dremel tool and has got me through some of my projects. But I always felt like the Dremel is a jack of all trades but master of none. I’ve had terrible luck with Dremel wire brushes..they seem to last all but 10 minutes before all the wires disappear. I use the drum sander bits often as well but the longevity of those aren’t to good either.

    I like the early model's spindle lock switch. My more recent button type can be tricky if you're using the little spanner [sorry, wrench] and you want to control the depth of the tool in the collet, 'all fingers and thumbs' me mum would've said. But definately a tool that once you have one, you'll miss it when its gone. Versatility is often no more than a selling ploy - but in the Dremel its the reason it exists. They bought me a new one for xmas but I still use my older one 'cos I don't want to put any wear on the newbie!

    I love my dremel tool and I wholeheartedly agree to spend the extra money and buy the dremel brand accessories. I once bought some cutoff wheels from Harbor Freight thinking I got a good deal. I guess that Aric Bolf never read "Popular Science" or "Popular Mechanics" as a child. I remember the ads from ever so long ago, touting this little hand-held motor device that had interchangeable bits and bobs that could do some astounding things. Laugh at this one. I had heard of Dremel but never looked or had any interest in getting one. About 12-13 years ago I bought a house and there were a few bits and rolls for the drum in a parts organizer left behind by the seller. I never connected the dots that they were for a Dremel. Scout, thanks for doing a video on the Dremel. I have one. Haven't used it much but should use it more. One of the extra attachments I bought is the little saw. It even has a plastic safety shield just like a regular table saw. I do need to get some wire brushes. A lot of things came with it but no wire brushes. Do you use regular compound when you buff? Or does the high revolution speed need a special compound? - Kathie

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kathie! The wire brushes are great but you do get what you pay for! The cheap ones don't last, but they are cheap! LOL I find polish like Flitz or Wenol work really good with the Dremel but most types of polish will work! They really are a great addition to the shop!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!

    I believe Dremel made the Craftsman tool for Sears.
    I have 2 of them and the newer drill stand.
    You said something about the wires coming out of the wire wheels. The wire wheels should not be run over 8 or 10K rpm because the wires get slung out. The top limit is on the package.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Roy! I think you are right about Dremel making Craftsman tools! Also many of the import Wire brushes spit wires when they are used a little and loosen up... There is a reason you get 30 for $5! LOL Thanks!!!!!

  • @EVILDR235

    Good information. Yes Dremel stuff is costly, but worth it. I see around here the Dremel tools at the store no longer have replaceable brushes. So what do you do when the brushes wear out ? Send it back to the factory for repair or spend more money and buy another one ? I believe I have 3 of the older tools at the present time and several sets of new extra brushes. Seems like every time one tool company buys out another, they start making them cheaper with global components. (Vise Grips ) is one. I support AMERICAN companies not some company in Kow Dung Pi.

    • @ScoutCrafter

      Hi Chuck! You are so right! Planned Obsolescence!!!!!!! Once you know you really like a particular product then you have to make the decision on if the product is worth buying again or moving up... A perfect example is the Foredom tool... They took a lot of business away from Dremel when things changed... Thanks!!!!!!!!!

      Hi Derek! That seems to be a common consensus with some of the new Dremel tools, However they do have certain features like as the load increases so does the power from the tool... I would love to see how the old does against the new! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!
