  • In this video we will be taking our first look at "Welcome to Wrexham" Season 2, Episode 1. “So, the King of England called.” The show returns to a rejuvenated Wrexham. Jerseys are sold out, the whole town is filled with excitement and pride, and their football club is gaining fans from all over the world. It seems everyone is restless, hoping more than ever that Wrexham AFC gets promoted. With all the money poured in, failing to advance to ‘league two’ would be catastrophic not only to morale, but the literal financial sustainability of the club.

You asked if the King’s been to Wrexham before (he’s been everywhere over the years!), yes, he unveiled the memorial to the 1934 Gresford Mining Disaster a couple of miles from the Racecourse, back in 1984 (the club still holds a minutes’ silence before the home match closest to September 22nd each year, by the way). It’s “Kop” by the way, named after the Battle of Spion Kop in the Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902). The whole thing about Wrexham getting “city status” begs the question of what exactly is the definition of a “city” - it used to be that it had to have an Anglican cathedral, but nowadays a town just needs to have a Royal Charter - a small number of these have been issued after competitions in 2000, and for the Queens’ jubilees in 2002, 2012, and 2022 - Wrexham finally won the competition in 2022 (Wrexham does actually have a cathedral, but it’s a Roman Catholic one so it doesn’t count). Being a city in the UK is just a status thing - it doesn’t mean anything in the way of how the place is governed or financed. Technically, London _isn’t_ a city, though it contains two cities, Westminster and the City of London (the original Roman settlement).

City status is conferred upon a town by the Monarch. Usually a large place of worship is required (of any denomination) for a town to be considered. It's not an overly common event. It has nothing to do with population. Kop is short for Spion Kop, a mountain in South Africa with was fought over by the British and the Boers (the other colonizers of South Africa, mainly of Dutch heritage). The regiments that fought there were ostensibly from the north of England (and Wales). There are Kops at other football grounds - Liverpool for one. An interesting historical fact is that 3 future world leaders were at Spion Kop - DeKlerk, Gandhi and Churchill.

Kop = head or mound. A raised area. It is a Dutch word that came into English via Afrikaans during the 2nd Boer War, after a hill called Spion Kop ('spy' or look-out hill). It was first applied to one end of Arsenal's stadium in 1904 and then spread as the term for all such mounds in the UK where the crowd stand to watch the game.

In the UK, city status is granted by and at the whim of a reigning monarch. It has nothing to do with population as the ancient city of Wells demonstrates (was very important in the middle ages, with a huge cathedral, yet it is a small town with a the population of just over 12,000) but more with the ''importance'' of a town, which is in of it self, somewhat subjective.

The term Kop for a particular stand within a stadium is used in a number of grounds throughout the country.
The name is believed to have come into use in the early 1900s when at many grounds a bank of raised earth was built at the end of a pitch to allow supporters a better view, Arsenal then added over a hundred steps & the stand towered over the pitch.
A news reporter likened the silhouette of the fans standing on the top of the mound to British soldiers standing atop of a hill in South Africa after a battle.
The hill was called “Spion KOP!
A similar story can also be attributed to other grounds, in particular to the Liverpool ground with the most famous KOP END of them all!!
