Goju Ryu is from Calling Crane, as expressed in their San Chin. Uechi Ryu also has San Chin, but the kung fu connection has not been established. Of course, there is Tibetan White Crane, and Northern White Crane, which is not related to Southern White Crane.

I took Tiger Claw Kung Fu, a southern style. ( FU GA PIE) - forgive the spelling. We did a few crane blocks and Crane hits in that system. Kunf Fu isn't recognized enough. I hear MMA fighters saying Kung Fu is no good but they use Kung FU techniques like: The Superman Jab, the back jab as well as the cross even-though all fighters use the cross. The double jab and various front hooks.
Kung Fu is meant to be used without gloves/ bare knuckle.
    1) Animal Hits
    2) Soft Style
MMA Uses Eldows that's done in Kung FU and blocks near their hands

Hello - I have been watching your videos for some time. Can you tell me what school of white crane you have trained with. Thank you. Martin

Hello Martin, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I've trained in Ancestral Crane with YMAA for many years. Also, via a connection with one of the instructors at YMAA, I have an instructor who gives me private lessons in Feeding Crane, Sifu Liu Chang-I lineage.

Thanks, I am training Yong Chun white crane but I think many of our concepts are quite different - certainly the teaching methodology. Does your teaching represents Dr Yang s style? - i.e. does he approve of your videos - so if I were to relate your concepts could I say "this is YMAA style" ? Best Wishes, Martin

I'm not familiar with Yong Chun White Crane. Although I do know that Yongchun/Wing Chun is a decedent of Southern White Crane. My teaching methodologies are different than YMAA (Ancestral/Sleeping Crane) as well as my Feeding Crane instructor as I incorporate the Crane principles within our Kempo as well. The White Crane concepts and principles are still there, although some applications may vary. If you were to watch our video on the covering block for instance, that is the traditional Ancestral Crane covering block in movement and in principle. What concepts are emphasized within the White Crane system that you study?

Yong Chun is the place in china where Fang Qi Niang is meant to have taught - it is not a decendant of Southern White Crane. There is a short history on one of my web pages here: www.yongchunbaihechuen.com/history.html - it may be useful for you to find out about it.
So you do not officially teach i.e. with your teaches approval - either of the two lineages you have studied? I am just trying to work out who is oficially teching in North America as I see quite a lot of "white crane" name usage I expect partly for marketting.
Regarding "taking a crane technique" out of the style I do not think that works at all well. The style and manner of execution are by far the largest part of the sistem - the basics do not incorporate a specific movement. - certainly nobody would ever talk about "strategic evasiveness and subtle methods of manifesting power" in china. The concept of saying "this is a crane block" also would be very strange to the people in the wu shu guan where I train - straying rather towards the exceedingly entertaining (and lovely I am sure ) Jake Mace and his methods of teaching. !! - Is your kempo Ed Parker -? are you a 5th degree black belt in it? do you have any of your kenpo katas uploaded executed in kenpo style? Regards, Martin.

Yongchun is also pinyan for Wing Chun, which is thought to be a descendant of Southern Crane. Thanks for the info, I'll take a look.
I'd be interested in knowing what power methods are taught in your white crane training, as both the Ancestral and Feeding Crane systems share many similarities, and the methods of initiating power are in many ways more subtle than those of other systems.
In fact, one of the most interesting characteristics of White Crane is the different principles behind initiating power, and it is principles more than techniques that are at the core of any system. This is really what all martial arts systems are designed to teach students to understand and be able to effectively apply. Once one really understands the principles at play, it becomes easier to see the connections between systems, which at the surface may appear to be quite different.
Incorporating methods from one system within another has been the history of martial arts. Systems develop and evolve over time because of the sharing of ideas. To say that methods of one system cannot be integrated with those of another is absurd and is a very limiting mindset. Now, I would not recommend a beginner go out and do so; thankfully, I had my instructors to turn to in helping me to connect the dots.
