Tim Miller was on Corridor’s VFX Artists React a couple months ago, and on there he said Joe Abercrombie was his favorite author. So excited to see him get to adapt a work of his and think he is the perfect fit!
If they had started with adapting the first 3 books, then I would find myself more excited. Part of the charm in this book is already knowing a lot of the characters and already being introduced to the world and how it operates.
Rebecca Ferguson is an absolutely brilliant actress and a great casting! My only concern is how bad Hollywood have been as of late with adaptations
She couldn't play Monza right?
I'd put Monza at early 30s, so 39-year-old Ferguson wouldn't be too much of a stretch imo
She is fantastic in Silo! I live for the new episode each week right now.
Haven't see Silo yet, but didn't care for her in Dune. maybe it was just the way she saw the role, but I thought lady Jessica would have more mental toughness.

Shivers is legitimately one of my favorite characters ever put to paper. I think starting with Best Served Cold is a great idea. We can always go back to the first trilogy to set up Logan for when he's back in the spotlight, but damn. I'm pumped.
Its so smart of them to begin with Best Served Cold. A fantastic stand alone story that can link to the wider universe. This is well deserved. Here's hoping in eventually we get the Bloody Nine in live action!
It’s happening bois! I literally cannot put into words how hyped I am. BSC is a book that has a huge amount of emotional value for me as it’s directly influenced my life for the better. I’ll be counting the days.

I'd be much happier if it was actually a show and not a movie. If anything has been proven in the last decade or two in regards to "tv show vs movie" debate it's that tv shows are vastly better when it comes to adapting books and far more likely to do the source material justice
@@joenobody5913 Well... then you have Rings of Power and Wheel of Time shows... and the Witcher show didn't do much justice to the books or games. Also not sure if I would lump Game of Thrones there or not, considering it did do a fairly faithful job when it was working with published material.
@@NicolasClark7732 Sure. Funny how you list the few bad series, two of which weren't even trying to be adaptations of source material and not the myriad of awesome movie series. To each their own, but I'd still much rather have a tv series with all the possible benefits it brings that the movies just plain cant
@@joenobody5913 I do think TV series make for a better shot at adapting a book or game, but they're still not great. If anything, I think they should be animated adaptations. There are absolutely more movie adaptations that are bad, but we have gotten good stuff in recent years.

Im excited, but nervous. When it comes to book adaptations, you have to be realistic.
Also, the one problem i see starting with BSC is everything with Shivers but maybe not.
it'll be fine. shivers will talk about the north but you don't have to know about it to follow along.
I actually think Shivers surviving isn't that big of a spoiler if you go back and do Era 1 of First Law. The one thing they have to write around is Jezal becoming the King.

I think adapting Better Served Cold might a good move to see if the audience responds well to it, so, if it goes nicely, they can later adapt bigger story arcs from the original trilogy and Age of Madness.
Also, i like Abercrombie's attitude on this. He knows that there's so much that can get go wrong while making an adaptation, so it's better to be cautious.
Edit: apparently, this guy, Tim Miller, is already connected to a couple of movies stuck in development hell, like the Neuromancer and Borderlands adaptations. Hope this is not a foreshadowing or anything.

And lo and behold - the notification appeared.
The Heroes is my favorite of the First Law stand alones, but I think it would be a bad place to try starting. It's a lot more complicated than Best Served Cold, which is a very classic and emotionally impactful story that a lot of people will probably be able to vibe with. So, all in all, great news.
I think that The Heroes greatest strength for a first adaptation would be how divorced it is from the main series in terms of the characters (except for maybe Bethod's children and Shiver's short apperances)
Best served cold is my favourite Abercrombie book. Genuinely one of the best Heist fantasy books out there. So so excited. It's standalone and you don't have to have read first law trilogy to start the book.
I actually introduce people to the series from it, because it is a smashing jumping off point despite being a sequel.
I just found out from you that First Law has a heist. I think it just shot up about 200 spaces in my tbr. Heists are dope.

I am excited for Rebecca Ferguson - I really have been impressed with her acting and could see her carrying that film in an interesting, dramatic, badass way.
Holy Hell PERFECT choice. My favorite of his books, a self contained story and Renaissance Italy inspired setting, and it is even structured like a three act movie. The fact that this is such a superior point of entry makes me really hope this is being taken seriously.
Will the audience like the act one of the movie, it's one of the more intense scene's joe has written. I'm afraid it's not going to be as brutal. If it's live action, it's going to be on the level of blood that 300 had. I hope.
I am cautiously optimistic. Hopefully they will get it right. Than again fantasy adaptations of late have been soo horrible that I simply don't dare to hope.
Honestly whenever I hear a adaptation news I immediately think "Don't be shit, please for fuck's sake don't be shit"
@@atharvadeshpande4749 I know the feeling. Especially when I hear the words 'Update for a modern audience' I get worried. Not to say that you can't do it, but all to often the people doing the updating seems to have no idea what they are doing.

1. The actual source material
2. The audience you're "updating" it for
And adaptation writers don't seem to have an idea for any of it really. They don't understand the source material, look at The Wheel of Time show. They did not understand the core themes of the series at all and neither the characters. The series was apparently problematic according the Rafe Judkins and he is the lord and saviour of the new Audiences that didn't even know who in the blimey hell was Rafe Judkins, before he was said to be adapting the Wheel of time to TV.

I'm so excited! Best Served Cold is my favorite book in the First Law World, and Monza is probably my favorite character. Not only her, but we also get Caul Shivers! So excited!!!

Nice! Best Served Cold is such a good standalone. This will be a good test to see if the IP can draw a crowd to a movie
It is the most stand alone. Only the shivers part won't make much sense if the do the first Trilogy

Just now starting the First Law (series?). I like it so far, this news is pretty exciting if it comes through.
I have the feeling that the spoilers are there only when you know the trilogy. There are no names, just "cripple" or "king", so sure, some people would connect the dots, bot for casual watchers they would be non-noticable.
I read the trilogy few years ago, and I already had problems remembering what they mean by some mentions.
This is going to be fire! Best served cold is so adaptable out of the first law.
Best Served Cold is one hell of a book. I am very interested to see if the adaptation can live up to the novel.
I can't believe this is happening. The First Law is a truly great series of the 21st century, and Best Served Cold works fine as entry point into the series if we're not starting with the Blade Itself, and Best Served Cold is definitely more suited to a movie adaptation than any other book in the series, where TV would probably serve better. I honestly can't wait, Joe deserves this so much and only hope the success Best Served Cold as a movie leads to a First Law Series

The Heroes could be the single greatest move/show ever made but I really really really want him to do the first trilogy before to really get people to appreciate the side characters and the tone Abercrombie is so good at.

After the Hobbit trilogy, IT, Ring of Power and whatever the hell the Dark Tower was, I told myself to never watch an adaptation again. But man, this news gets me excited and if it happens, I will be really _really_ tempted to watch

Hopefully, this can get me into the First Law universe. I put down the Blade Itself around halfway through. It had good moments but it felt very meandering

Daniel you introduced me to the first law in 2019 and since then I have been obsessed. I never read fantasy once before the first law and they are by far my favorite novels. Even more so than the three body trilogy. You still need to read the dark forest if I’m not mistaken! You are missing out!
On a side note in your cut in I saw the Licanius trilogy behind you, I just finished the series and loved it, even if a few story threads were left hanging.
I'm excited, but I'm not too sure how I feel about the format. Best Served Cold is literally written to be episodic, if adapted in that format and given the right budget and care I'm convinced it would be one of the best seasons of television ever made. A movie though I feel would be impossible to do the book justice
I think Graham Mctavish could potentially be cast as well. This year at Comic Con he talked about this book and he knows the author. I don't remember exactly what they asked him. But he said that if it was ever made, he could play Bayaz. I would love to see that.

Oh hell yes, so keen for this to happen! Joe worked with Tim Miller on some writer's room stuff for one of the Terminator movies, so it looks like they have a bit of a relationship already, which is promising. And Rebecca Ferguson would be incredible in this role :D

Dude I just got a sweet blade itself book on sale! Unfortunately because a Barnes n Nobles was closing sad but my god the amount of dank books I got for 50%..... Anyways consistently hearing awesome things on the first law. After red rising im diving in.
Time to move it up on my TBR.
Of the three standalones this is definitely the best pick for an initial adaptation. The other 2 are far two related to the main first law storyline to work without having first law adapted first
I am not sure how I feel about this. On the hand I am extremely excited as someone who has read the books, but not sure how you tell this story without giving major spoilers of the first trilogy. Shivers, Jezal, and Bayaz come to mind first. So either we are going to have a weaker adaptation in order to not to spoil the original trilogy to people who haven’t read the books, or we are going to spoil the original trilogy which will take the impact out of some of the most impactful moments of the original trilogy. Guess we will have to see.
Ahhhhhhhh so exciting. And Best Served Cold is 100% the right call. It is basically a movie already 😆

I was hooked!!! Hooked I tell ya, right off the bat by "The Blade Itself" while I put down "Best Served Cold". It's sitting unloved on my shelf. OK. I'll give it another chance. But man, that trilogy that started with 'The Blade Itself' was brain/world breaking. Never had a book series that built up and then tore down my assessment of the characters like those 3 books did. Not holding my breath, but I'll definitely give the movie a chance if it makes it to the big screen.
i wish it would've been the first book of the trilogy. i love glokta and logen. Best served cold isnt my favorite but is still great and avoids a lot of big spoilers for the first trilogy. I'm still mad about what they did to my boy shivers. :*(

This is so hype! I wonder if there is any connection from Steven Pacey being the narrator for The Drowned Giant and Tim Miller directing that episode. Can't wait to see more casting choices, Cosca & Morveer have some FANASTIC dialogue to deliver.
The First Law trilogy feels like one giant story broken up into parts - hence the Blade Itself feels less plotless if you view it through that lens
