To someone born and raised here on the west coast and now living in the SF bay area, it just boggles my mind to see so much decay. Everywhere here there is a premium paid for any kind of property -- especially on a waterfront. Of course, we have our bad areas too -- Oakland is our Camden or Detroit but even so, houses still average $500K+. So when I see videos like this with abandoned boats, buildings, docks, landscapes I have a hard time wrapping my head around the waste of it all. In a perverse sense, it almost feels like a kind of luxury that all of that can simply be abandoned for untold years at a stretch.
As for the lightship, 75-80 years from now, assuming this video still survives (doubtful), people will look back and think, "Why couldn't they have saved that???" because by then that ship will be some 200 years old. Think on that for a moment.
Americans. We don't value our history. Not really. We're too preoccupied with chasing whatever is the perpetual new thing -- even if it is now made in China.

@@JohnDoesItAll Here's another one. I'm writing this stuff down hoping to pass on to my two boys. My dad was one of those 50s dads who didn't do a lot of talking. Learned more about dad from my uncle in five minutes that I visited than I did my dad my whole life.
This is my “Death Valley-Furnace Creek Ranch” story.
I'm looking at the scene in a video where the Lone Ranger first rides Silver. When I was a kid me and a friend hitch-hiked to Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley. For a job as a waiter and then later a fry cook. We walked the last 25 miles in the heat of summer. There was a little pond across the street we used to swim and bath in. It was so hot you'd get out of the pond and be bone dry before you walked 10 feet.
“Dry” The heat was dry. You never saw or felt or experienced anything like it.
I have a few stories from this time but the one about the horses is my favorite. Horses like to have fun and they have a sense of humor.
I was walking on the golf course, which they close in the summer, and saw a bunch of horses which were let loose to graze. There were probably about six or eight of them. I walked up and started stroking their noses and patting them. Then got a wild hair to jump on one of them. Well this sucker took off. He was galloping like a horse out of a western......and then stopped dead in his tracks. I went flying. The grass was like a wrestling mat so I didn't get hurt. The horses started gathering around me, (the other horses had galloped alongside us), and I went ahead and jumped on another one. Same thing; the horse took off like a bat out of hell for about a hundred yards and stopped on a dime......and I went flying. I did this with all the horses for about an hour till I got tired and started walking back to my cabin. There were two maids standing there who had seen the whole thing and one of them said, “What are you trying to do? Kill those poor horses?” But the other lady spoke up and said “Mabel, those horses were having just as much fun as he was.” True story.

It was the Pyne Poynt Marina owned by Rod Sadler. In 1994 he offered to give the Barnegat a berth and try to raise funds for its preservation when a Philly Waterfront Group disbanded and no other groups wanted it. He was an active citizen in Camden City planning and economic development and wanted to restore it for the City's waterfront. Flash forward 20+ yrs of no interests from any groups or funding, he passed away in 2019. The good news is Camden County has purchased the property from his wife in 2023 and is developing a park that includes plans to restore the ship.... fingers crossed they are successful in doing so!

I'm amazed at the amount of sunken boats there! Here in Washington's Puget Sound area if ONE boat sinks at it's mooring, it's a huge deal, and the Coast Guard response is immediate! Within days the vessel will be salvaged under the Derelict Vessel Program. I honestly like seeing sunken boats from time to time, but holy cow, that's alot there! I like how you don't destroy or damage stuff while exploring. Sad to see such a historic vessel in that condition. Here on the west coast, we have a preserved USCG Lightship in Astoria, Oregon. Great video!

I subscribed, hope that helps. My Dad was the honorary captain of the Moshulu, when it was directly on the Delaware nearer the Ben Franklin Bridge, and just south of it was the Barnegat. I remember that ship in much better condition. It was old then, of course, but the paint was maintained, and I think it even had tours. The Moshulu ex 'Kurt' is only 1 year older, built in 1903.
It's sad to see such important history fading away. I think it's gotten harder to preserve ships like this unless they have an active income from tours. People can look up any ship now without leaving home, learn about them and often watch footage whereas in years past, there was the very hit or miss public library or just getting in the car and visiting.
So yeah, the times we're in isn't just killing malls, it's letting tangible nostalgia rot because it's represented digitally.
The only reason the Moshulu is still being maintained is because it's a restaurant.

The vessel seems unsalvageable at this point. At the very least, it would be financially ruinous to do so. But what someone should do is preserve part of it. Like say, take one of the deckhouses, and one of the light masts, and make a memorial. Get the light working again so the memorial is lit up at night. It would be super cool. Clearly efforts were made by various organizations to preserve the vessel in the distant past. It didn't work. But I think parts of it could still be preserved for posterity. I think lightships are probably my favorite type of vessel. Everyone likes lighthouses, and boats, and merging the two creates a very novel thing. I wish there were small die cast desktop display models of all the worlds lightships. They're not just pleasing in concept they're pleasing to look at as well. There's something about lightships that fill me with a sense of adventure.

The ship was at Penns Landing for a number of years until the owners disbanded, it was sold to the marina it currently sits at. The owner did intend to refurbish it, unfortunately he died before he realized that dream.
The marina (and by extention the lightship) are now owned by the County.
They plan to create a new park at the site but no word had been said about the Barnaget thst I have heard.

Great vid , so much waste ! Someone could clean up and sell the scrap and cool stuff . And those old Gilligan island boats could be sold to someone with an old car or truck . Even the docks sold off but maybe no family left or property of the city now left to rot .

I would give that place a early 80s time frame, to stand still. I paid for machine sodas with 50 cents when I was a kid..The steel boats, they pain me.. I weld frames on 500 dollar vehicles for smiles. Taking on an old steel ship would be an amazing daydream. I saw the big boat not long ago on two feet outdoors you tube channel.

It’d be nice to fund raise and get her (The Barnegat Light ship) back up and floating. The John J. Harvey, a retired FDNY Hero Boat has been restored and functions now as a nonprofit that provides trips all around NYC and NJ Hudson River waterway. This could be a ship perhaps that is restored then docked for tours and events.

These boats are a perfect example of why you never waste money on a boat in the first place. Become close friends with someone who owns a boat, never own a boat yourself. Believe me, I have, three of them, and later in life I regret the money I spent on them because I would have instead $1 million earning 5% in annual dividends and I would be retired today had I not wasted money on boats.
