Guinea pig talk 103: Lack of interest

  • Last week, five different owners gave up their guinea pigs. And whether it is because of the holidays that are almost here or whether it is just a coincidence... Four owners indicated when they brought their animals that there was no longer time or interest for the guinea pigs.
The guinea pigs themselves didn't really agree on this. After all, there is nothing wrong with them! We welcomed three male duos. Fortunately, they were all in good health, so hopefully they can soon move to a nice owner where they can stay for the rest of their lives.
The third couple was a trio of two old ladies of almost 7 years old and their two-year-old friend. We named them Bibi, Benthe and Babette. We have welcomed them several times as holiday guests, so they are no strangers to us. We already knew about Benthe's wobbly head, which has never been stable again after a serious ear infection a long time ago. Fortunately, she herself is not bothered by it. Because of the age of Bibi and Benthe and because all three of them are a super nice addition to the shelter, they continue to live in the shelter.
And we welcomed eight super cute girls! They were given up due to private circumstances. The ladies are all healthy and not too old. After consultation with the former owner, we decided to rehome the two sisters Pepper and Salt together, and we have housed the other six girls together for now. However, they will be separately coupled to lonely guinea pigs from owners who are looking for a new friend via our shelter.

Welcome in our animal shelter! We are located in Dongen (the Netherlands) and we take care of guinea pigs and some other small animals that seek for a new home. Many of these animals stay with us permanently at our welfare centre.
Our welfare centre for pets Beestenplein attributes to a better animal welfare in many ways. Amongst others by offering natural petfood, by our E-magazine and E-learning, by helping other animal shelters and via many other ways.

What cuties! I couldn't get by without our piggies, they are so fun and smart. They've learned multiple words like "grass" and "outside" - 2/5 will hop right into my arms when it's time to go inside / outside, and the others will all wait politely to be scooped up once the excitement has died down a bit.
I think when people "lose interest" or "don't have the time" is largely due to keeping their piggies too far from daily life. Ours live in high traffic areas so they see us all day and we see them too.

thats really impressive :D yes sadly we see a lot in our shelter that animals are given up because of lack of interest, they dont deserve that!
