Pacifica Coastal Erosion 9-19-20
Parts of the Bay Area, officials have already retreated from some parts of the coast, removing homes from cliffs that have eroded and areas that have flooded. San Francisco is taking steps to move the Great Highway away from Ocean Beach because erosion is eating away the earth beneath it. Houses and apartments in Pacifica, south of the city, were declared uninhabitable as cliffs that supported them gave way to erosion.

they have made that coastline so ugly trying to save their expensive homes. No building permits should ever have been given.
All of that crumbled concrete and piles of misplaced rocks takes a way from the natural beauty of the coastline. Looks trashy and overcrowded.
They to understand that all the money cant will not save you expensive home it was never yours to begain with . the will recalm it back.
I used to live in Pacifica, right on the coast and was an Architect practicing in Half Moon Bay. When these buildings were built in the 1960’s and 1970’s the coastline was much farther out than it is now (by a couple of hundred feet or more in many locations). With the more extreme tidal conditions and in some cases neglect from the city, these sandstone cliffs have eroded to where they are now.
Also of importance is that when these buildings were built there was no legislation, code or zoning ordinances to preclude building in these locations. Since the late 1990’s there has been a statewide commission called the California Coastal Commission that has to approve any construction between the coast and the first mountain range. Construction like this would not be allowed today.

THIS is why no matter how beautiful the setting, anyone buying within 2 klms of the coast anywhere that involves cliffs need too see an analyst. Coastal erosion has been going on for centuries - it's not new and it's not climate change. Better a cliff inland with a view than your belongings on the beach being washed to China

Those strips they put on the side of the eroding cliff to stop the erosion are new. They werent their 4 months before this video was shot, and you could see the concrete retaining wall. So they arent giving up without a fight

Really saad seeing these houses dragged down to the bottom....I grew up around there and I can’t describe how emotionally stressful the impact on all of the residents
Y' know... I feel badly for those who are losing their homes, but Geez! Building or buying a house on the edge of an oceanic bluff made of sand? What were they thinking? It is exactly the same as those who lost their houses when Kilauea cracked open in 2018 and everyone down-rift got covered up with lava. If you live on the flank an active volcano or on the edge of a bluff that is constantly eroding don't whine to me when Mother Nature comes a-knocking, because such romantic locations carry with them a hefty pricetag.

Fabulous video and music but very heartbreaking to see the coastline disappearing. I had no idea this was happening in Pacifica, haven't been there for many years. My brother lived in Pacifica but inland. My family home was in SF across the street from Lake Merced. Drove to Pacifica often to see my bro. Hope to visit SF/Pacifica when travel opens up. I live near Lake Tahoe now. Thanks for producing a great video. ❤🙏❤

Other places they don't allow people do build in places like this, and actively discourage people from even walking along the tops of these kinds of sandy bluffs.
Love your videos! A valuable historical documentation of the erosion process, and of course the Ocean is winning. I love this one because you give a good look at the houses and roads behind the oceanfront properties. It’s just a matter of time until they are affected. Feeling sad for the property owners. They must have 24/7 stress.
Exactly. I've seen photos of elsewhere taken in the 50's.and 60's where they were a KLM or half a mile inland and now they are mere hundred meters/feet away and growing smaller each storm season.
I really had no idea of this until about 6 months ago & I live in California, thanks to your videos. Looking at views of the bluffs from mid-60s on, development accelerated the failure. Made of compressed sand dunes, once the thick vegetation that held it together was removed and hardscapes with no consideration for drainage were built, those bluffs were doomed. The property owners could probably, at great cost, build effective sea walls, but uncontrolled runoff is a major factor in the bluffs failing. IMO.

Over 40 years ago, my climatology professor said that the most expensive housing is beachfront housing. He had no sympathy for those whose houses washed into the sea. I second that. I have absolutely no sympathy for the buttholes who lost their houses, unless they are poor people who had no other housing option.

Ugh I was wondering how that house was doing. Those poor people. I hope they're financially well-off and didn't sink their life savings into that property. It was a beautiful oasis back before the erosion took it. Now it must be a nightmare.
It was a shitty eyesore on the cliff- spoiled the view for the rest of us from the beach and ocean- hope it disappears soon and let the cliffs be natural. Rich trailer trash with no concerns for the natural environment.- Glad insurance doesn't cover this- I don't want higher premiums because of selfish dickheads.

I jogged along the coast there 30+ years ago. It's not like the beaches in Florida. Your leg goes down into the sand. And when the tide comes in your jog becomes a rock climbing event. I don't see the long, steep (near vertical?) wooden steps I used to make my escape.
There is a reason a lot of those homes are not expensive. Someone knew not to build there. Erosion is a powerful force.

What a really really strange bit of town. From the sea it looks like extreme luxury apartments, but if you look on Google Maps the house with the deck that's now fallen off is right behind a large bakery, next door to a car repair shop.
It's like all the smart property developers built further inland.
I thought it was smaller business owners living behind their establishments in a few cases - a few decades ago they would have had an enviable sea view and zero commute - kiss the wife 15sec after you hang the closed until tomorrow sign and turn the lock.

North Vancouver has a lot of houses built that close to the shore however the shoreline is simply exposed bedrock so houses should be save for a few hundred thousand if not millions of years
1:00 funny how they think some anchors in the sand with some concrete smearing and rabbit mesh can keep anything up.
2:15 in is how you stabilize the coast sort of on the cheap but only last a few decades. It'll last generations IF it's beefed up alot with rip rap out into ocean to where wash back from waves hitting shore won't erode sand bottom, ie, undermine rock. Help ALOT if boulders above piles were heavily planted with agressive growers, root and top, like shrub willows. You need to make nests for soil in voids and water until established, think pockets lined with burlap layered with hay and balls of peat mossy soil and gravel around burlap balled shrub willow and similar. Of course be good to get that out to water line, but you'd need some pretty salt tolerant plants.
For those with such issues, top of pile line (Piles need to have 25% sticking above beach with 75% drivin in.) where ever it is locally, you can only slope stones up at 45 degrees from there. This dictates where the main pile line goes Ideally you place it at mid point of a 45 degree slope from cliff level to sea. If you put piles at cliff edge and cut back at 45 degrees up from there, you need less fill, can use fill below piles in otherwise eroded areas but it might mean condemning property. If you move pile line out so you don't need to cut back cliff, then you need astronomical amounts of fill.
More piles a grid 10 feet on center and slope of rock at 45 degrees from main pile line out to ocean ending in flat mat at least 10 feet deep That wedge of rock will be adding greatly to cost but will break waves well away from cliff face ending erosion problem.
For beach areas, carve 'bays' into rock mat, but not very wide, so sand pulled out will build up in rock mat, not wash out to sea. You'll need to refill beach periodically at it gets pulled out and dumped into rock mat.

It's a recurring theme: City Couicils, builders and architects disregard expert advice, or fail to seek it. It's hard to claim "buyer beware" when the hazard is years away. Yet, here it is. All I can do is shake my head and sympathise. This happens on all coastlines.

I thought I recognized this area, I saw a video years ago and I think there was a backhoe trying to due some stabilization. If you look at about the 3:40 mark you'll see some million dollar houses sitting on a hill in the background. You can bet your sweet bippy that those will slide also. Good job pilot.

To be fair, it's limestone but yeah -- don't build houses on alluvial soil cliffs at the beach.
@@lohphat Not everybody knows what alluvial soil is. I got a soil analysis from an engineer that referred to arrivual soil, which would mean artistic soil. The Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years, California, West of Mexicali isn't going to last that long.

Curious. What was the logic behind investing in the revetment to protect the trailer park at 02:10? By definition, they're mobile homes meaning they could be moved. Somewhere else. Not doomed to fall into the ocean. Really curious about that decision process.

I've spent times Pacifica. Dollarton Sation used to have about an acre of land fronting on the cliff. Can't fight Mother Nature.

The home owners should be made to pay for the clean up after their home falls off the cliff. It is ridiculous in the first place that permits were granted to build. I will not feel sorry for any of these people whether they rent or own. The ocean does not sneak up on you overnight.
