  • A couple days ago I introduced new Carniolian queens to the hives. Today I need to get in there and see if the new queens have been released. Join us on our search, and see the surprises that we find!

      Me too but.....I do fear a potentially dangerous possibility. If someone with a bee allergy is stung by one of my bees and dies, am I going to be sued? Is there "bee" or "apiary" insurance? Plus, the entire idea I caused a death, worse the death of a child gives me some pause to move forward on the idea.

      One video leads into 6....after about 2 hours you get to realising, you guys have like a whole network going on. Making sure the bees are safe and restocking them after the monsanto incidents.
      Thanks guys for having the common sense to do this. I know it's not easy dealing with hives that sting you.... and i know it's because you weren't around since it started so I've actually learnt a fair bit today.
      Wish city slackers would damn well do the same and just work together like you guys.

      Take a 2liter plastic bottle and cut the top off about 5 or 6inches from the top. Turn the top over and insert it into to cut side of the lower portion of the bottle. Tape it with duct tape so it doesn’t come apart. Put some sugar water inside or some raw ground beef. The wasps and hornets will fly inside but will be unable to get out. You can let them starve (it will take a long time if you put meat in the trap) or you can just toss the whole thing in a fire when it’s full.

    Hi, I'm a biology student and don't really know much about apiculture, but would like to learn. I have some questions
    1) does the second comb have holes for the bees to go out or get some oxygen in?
    2) what did you spray before getting the combs out?
    3) why aren't you wearing gloves?
    Thanks for sharing your work.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Yes, there is ventilation in the hives. These top bar hives have a screened bottom, plus the entrance holes to let in air. If the bees get too hot, they will go outside of the hive and fan air into the hive with their wings.
      2. At this point, the only thing I am "spraying" them with is smoke. If you are asking about the glass jars, those are filled with a sugar syrup. Because the hives were queenless (I thought), I wanted to make sure that they had plenty of food in which to make wax with.
      3. I rarely wear gloves. There has only been 3 times this year that I had to. Mainly because even just the veil and helmet, you get very hot. Gloves make you warmer still. Also because the bees will not bother me, unless I accidently squish one.
      Thanks for your questions, and for watching. I hope you enjoy some more of my videos.

    There would be no way I would be handling them without a suit. After nailed buy wasps (that are always aggressive), I would wear a suit. They are some pretty mellow bees though. In Arizona we have 'kept' bees, feral honey bees (which the bee guys love to get), which tend to be quite mellow, and Africanized (which are ALWAYS aggressive). The bee guys always kill them.
    I dumped out the bits of scratch and finely ground corn at the bottom of a chicken scratch bag one warm February day for the feral pigeons, and the bees were all over it. I was like what in the world are they doing? I bent over to look at them and they weren't bothered in the slightest.They were stuffing it into their pollen baskets! I thought 'Wow, they must really be hungry!'. I guess the corn looked like pollen to them, but I would never have guessed they would have eaten it. So I put out the sugar water for them and talked to several bee guys to come get them. I must have had a hundred bees slurping up the sugar water. The first guy that got there was happy to get them, the others were like 'Oh, they're gone? Aww :( ' I've had feral bees that needed to be taken away twice. The first guy charged me, the second guy was happy to get them for free. He was so gentle with the bees and sucked them up with a bee vac and put the comb into a hive box. Once he got them in the box he showed us the queen that was in a mesh topped mason jar. She was a twice the size of the workers. Never once did they show any hint of aggression because he was so gentle with them. He even said jokingly said 'you're such good bees' a couple of times. He was such a sweet guy, no wonder the bees were calm.

    I'm no bee expert, but I just had to say after watching this video I have never seen a hive like this. I'm used to seeing the normal or regular hives that stack. But I do like this. So those pieces of wood on top act as a lid and the bees just build their comb straight down from each piece of wood? That's amazing!

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. It's called a top bar beehive. The top bars serve as the base for the comb, and as the lid for the colony. The roof keeps the weather out. Glad you found me, hope you watch more!

    Interesting hive box. What would you call that design? And, what keeps em from sticking the comb to the sides of box?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are called, Top Bar beehives. The slanted sided ones are actually Kenyan Top bar beehives. The slant mimics the floor, and bees do not typically connect comb to the floor. The will connect to the sides if, the bar is full of honey, and needs the extra support, or if the side has an observation window. For some reason bees like to build wax on glass. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy them!

    • @segami2808
      @segami2808 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah ok, does it perform better? Which do you prefer using?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer using the top bar hives. The reason for that is because of health reasons, I have a difficult time lifting the heavy boxes in a regular bee hive. On a top bar hive, you are lifting 7 or 8 pounds max per bar. Also, because you are exposing less bees at a time, I find they are easier to work with. Regular hives will produce more honey. Regular hives overwinter better.

    Would this kind of comb not be extremely unhandy for honey extraction? A different way of putting a question about the kind of comb would be: What is the advantage vs the Langstroth hive and comb?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      awalt26439, some people do use an extractor for top bar combs. However, you must run slow with it. Most top bar beekeepers use the "crush and strain" method of processing the honey. Advantages? Well, they are easier to work with as far as lifting goes. With the top bar, the comb can weigh up to 8 pounds, but if you have to move a Langstroth super, it can weigh 70 pounds or more. Langs will produce more honey. Top Bars produce more wax. I hope that this answers your questions, and thank you for watching the video.

    I don't think no one loves honey and the comb more than me. I always make a large Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Have for over 35 years. We have a house full to come enjoy the feast. When my son was small he loved home made baked beans with the roasted turkey. Well it became a regular every year. He's 40 now and still loves it. The baked bean pot was always eaten up. Everyone would say there's just something different about yours. It was the honey and brown sugar i put in them. It really does make a big difference. I also add honey to my pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato pies. I have a friend that lives local that had bees I always get from him. Sure wish I had a jar of your honey and comb. It really did look good. I sure enjoy your video.

  • @dhansel4835

    What do you use to mark the queen? Toe nail polish ???
    Another question.... that's a different type of hive, it looks like a rectangle.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Beekeepers that raise queens have paint pens that they use to mark queens. Nail polish would take too long to dry, and the fumes from it probably would cause problems. They have 5 colors they use,
      Color Year ending
      White 1 or 6
      Yellow 2 or 7
      Red 3 or 8
      Green 4 or 9
      Blue 5 or 0
      So, it being 2017, queens are marked with a yellow dot.

    • @dhansel4835
      @dhansel4835 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK... I learned something. Bee keeping is really an in depth process all the way from introducing a new queen to getting rid of the Africanized bee queen.
      Can you take a domestic European queen and put them in an Africanized hive and make it an European hive or do you have to kill all the A worker bees and just start over?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new queen's genes would take over. Bees live for up to 2 months in the summertime, so you would have to wait a while before the hive would be more gentle.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, the hive is a Top bar beehive. Instead of using frames, the bees draw the comb down from removable top bars.

    Just curious, did the second hive reject the new queen? I say this because when you removed the comb with the queen cage in the second hive there was a different queen running on the comb just behind it. You can see her running down the middle of the comb at 9:50-9:56 and again at the top left side at 9:57-10:05.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Yes. After searching for the queen and signs of a queen (eggs/larva/brood) and not finding any, I bought and added a marked queen. My guess is that a virgin queen was infact in the hive, and finally got mated. They killed off the purchased queen, and the virgin queen got mated, and is now laying. Whew... I am glad of that at least. Would have been better to have seen her before investing in that marked queen! Great question, and thanks for watching!

      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      there must be quite a few hives in the area for 2 wild queens to come in and take your hives from the ones you bought. unfortunate though

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      lol, no more likely than not, I panicked and did not give the virgin queens enough time. If I had waited just a few more days I would not have had to buy the queens. Expensive lesson. Or, as another viewer said, perhaps the workers "groomed" the marking off of her.

      Jon Alarcon Yup, just think of all the almond milk used today. Every almond that grows needs a bee.
      Alot of eastern beekeepers ship their hives to Cali n winter to pollinate the almonds. Problem is, theres a new herbicide/pesticide that is being used n place of round up that is much more deadly to the bees & many bees don't make it home again after workin n Cali. Humans r dumb

    • @vortexgen1
      @vortexgen1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a lot of everything that gets pollinated, like two thirds of everything we eat, and the big chemical companies keep coming up with more deadly chemicals to put into our food to make more money for themselves and destroy our environment and our health. GMOs are also making things worse as well.

    • @animeaunty
      @animeaunty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      vortexgen1 It's very frustrating that the public has such a warped understanding of GMOs. Genetically modifying food has been going on for thousands of years, just slower. Any time u cross breed a plant, u r modifying it genetically. These new modifications r doing great things like larger & more plentiful products.
      The true problem that people think they have with this is NOT the fact that ARE modified but WHAT they r modified for. The problems arise when the plant is modified to survive TREMENDOUS amounts of herbicide/pesticide. Therefore, we r eating great quantities of Roundup & have been, n increasing quantities, from womd to tomb, for 5 or 6 generations. What we dump on our GMOs is the issue, no so much that we have artificially evolved them.
      There has only ever been 1 single true independent study on the effects of Roundup & that ONE 2yr french study was on rats. All other studies were biased to prove a point so cannot b accepted. We have been dumping millions of gallons of this poison on ALL or food for 70+ years & don't really know what it can do to us. The French study indicated that the r hormone issues (now all the youth gender bending makes some sense) as well as kidney, liver, & gall bladder problems. I only found all this out when my son, then 16, was having bad gall attacks & I had heard of other kids n his very small charter school having thier gall bladders removed. Those odds seemed off.
      Research is impossible to find & my son suffers many problems that no Dr can quantify & online I'm finding MANY other teen males with frustrated mom's n the same boat.

How much more often are people stung by bees near an apiary? Hey beekeepers? How often do you get stung in a week, month, or year? Plus, the entire idea I caused a death, worse the death of a child gives me some pause to move forward on the idea of becoming a bee keeper. Any experienced people with a comment for me?

    • @PaulOtis

      Jenna, she is locked up in the cage, because that is the way she arrived when I purchased her. The cage has a candy plugging the entrance, with a small cork as well. We take off the cork, and the bees will eat the candy to free the queen. We do this so that it takes a little time for her to get free, so the bees will be accustomed to her scent. I hope that helps! Don't know if you ever respond to comments on your vids but I'm curious about the strange hiveboxes and why you use them. I would be concerned about the open screen bottoms attracting predators/pests... Just curious.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the question! I do reply on comments. The hives are called Top Bar Beehives. I used them because they are easier to work, as far as lifting goes. Instead of lifting a full box of frames, you just lift one comb at a time. The screen bottom allows for ventilation, but it also works as a pest management system as well. Pest such as small hive beetle and varroa mites can fall through the mesh. In addition, the bottom can be closed off, like for winter and such. Thanks again for the questions, and for viewing the video. Hope you can watch more of them!

    How to handle bees wearing only a t-shirt, shorts and bare-handed. ZEN! You must have a peaceful mind, first. If a bee is in your face, remember it is a female, be a gentleman/woman and thank her for her song. And, with a female workforce, move slowly and gently, make sure they are fed, when necessary ...otherwise you are a lout and the bee-ladies will attack rightfully so. Do NOT consume alcohol when around your hives. It makes them angry. If you do get stung do not pull the stinger out. You will squeeze the poison sacks and it will hurt a lot more. Scrape the stinger out, instead. Bees are so cool, once you understand.

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, This hive is called a Top Bar Hive. A Kenyan Top Bar Hive, to be specific. It was designed so that people with little resources could keep bees, instead of killing the hives to get the honey. The hive was started with a 3 pound package of bees this spring, and they built all the comb themselves. They draw the comb off of the top bars. Thanks for the question, and for watching. Hope you enjoy the rest of the videos!

    I have been told by many beekeepers to never turn a top bar upside down. Better chances of losing the comb.

      Kind of. You can not flip the bar over. You have to manipulate it around, always keeping the comb in a plane with the ground. If the weather is hot, you probably do not want to turn the bar upside down.

      As a beekeeper of more than 50 years, and running around 400 hives back in the day, I fail to see why anyone would keep bees in these top bar hives. If anyone feels like commenting, I would like to hear the reasons for using this style of hive.

      Why would anyone want to use plastic forms that immitate comb? In top bar hives the bees act as they would in a ceiling or wall and create what seems natural to them.. I opt for the log hive or one of the hives that are created in Africa. A top bar hive seems to be the most logical to me. Something natural, not plastic, seems to me to be the only way to keep bees.

      Jenny Haskell, There are a number of reasons why one might run top bar hives. One reason is that they are much easier to work on. With a Lang, you have to lift 70-80 pound (or heavier) boxes. With a top bar, you have to lift a bar that weighs 8 pounds or so. So, people with back issues are able to work with them. Secondly, top bars can be made easily with scrap material you have on hand, and can be done so without the use of power tools. Langs, while you could build with scrap, it would be very difficult. In addition, many beekeepers buy their woodenware, much more expensive than a top bar hive. Also, when working with the top bar hive, you only have a small portion of the hive open and exposed at a time. Much less stressful in my opinion, than having then entire top of the hive opened up. I have worked Langs for many years. I will work them again. I prefer top bars. Everyone has options, and not many people know of these hives. Thank you very much for watching, and I invite you to watch more, and share your experience with bees!

    Giant red bees have moved in by my front door. I don't see any honey but they sure get riled up when I check. I've tried smoking them but it just seems to anger them...

      Those are not red bees but hornets or wasps.. These types do nothing but kill other things and sting the heck out of you..
      Be careful and dont let any children near there until you get rid of them.. Think those tall spray cans of Hornet Spray or something..

    What does it mean to be marked?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They mark the queen with a colored dot, it helps to find her more easily. The dots are also color coded to show what year the queen was born.

      Not anymore than any other pest or parasite. I did actually see this hive chase off wasps that were trying to get in. Thanks for watching!

    What does spraying them do ?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kristin, I am not sure where in this video I am spraying them with anything. I do use a smoker, but don't think that is what you are referring to. When I first hive the package of bees, I typically will spray them with sugar water, to keep them from flying, and to provide them with some food. Thanks very much for watching!

      Paul Otis my bad i think it was the smoker i was talking about 😅 i don’t know much about this so it just sounded like you were spraying something. What does the smoke do exactly ?

    • @PaulOtis
      @PaulOtis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kristin, no worries! The smoke causes the bees to gorge on honey. They do this because, they smell smoke, and think they have to leave the hive. Gorged honeybees seldom sting. The smoke also covers any alert pheromone that they may produce, so in effect, they have less of a chance to turn grumpy.
