Deepstaria enigmatica, is a jellyfish of the family Ulmaridae first described in 1967 by F.S. Russel. The bell of this jellyfish is very thin and wide (up to approx. 10 m), and resembles a translucent, undulating sheet or lava lamp as the animal moves. They are usually found in Antarctic and near-Antarctic seas but have been spotted in waters near the United Kingdom, at depths of 829 to 1830 meters.

marine biologists identified the creature as an enigmatic jellyfish called Deepstaria enigmatica, first described by F.S. Russel in 1967. Of course, it doesn’t look much like the types of jellyfish with which we are most familiar. D. enigmatica is quite different.
Also visible in the video is a net-like patch that some have speculated looks like a network of nerves. In fact, this is part of their digestive system. While the jellyfish floats along, it will come upon some prey, who ultimately get tangled in their large bell. The jellyfish seals the bell around the prey and stings it until it is dead. As it begins to digest the animal, the nutrients are taken up by that net-like area.

Right, don't listen to clickbait titles, people. This is not a sea monster, this is Deepstaria Enigmatica, a type of large jellyfish. Instead of using trailing tentacles to catch prey, like most jellyfish, it wraps its large, thin body around its victim like a trash bag. Remember: bullshit is everywhere on the internet, but real knowledge is just a google search away.

Cynthia Downs agreed we must look to view all creatures in their natural state and habitat. There are many more unusual species we do not yet know about just like the bed sheet creature we have just viewed. My only hope is that someday maybe I could discover a new creature myself perhaps during a diving expedition or whilst travelling through forrestry. 👍

Ocean has some crazy shit but so does freshwater. Catching a 20 pound 4 foot musky is absolutely crazy. Fish is almost as tall as I am. The state record is like 56 inches almost 5 feet tall.

Absolutely beautiful. When it first appeared, it looked like a waterbed mattress dumped & floating on currents in the ocean. After reviewing it whole, I would guess that it would be some kind of forced filter feeding (using that huge membrane to force water through its filters) jelly fish. I have to admit that in the beginning it almost looked CG when it first emerged. I hope for more encounters.
