  • Let's face it, bigger is bigger, even if it's just by an inch. And, while a 37 has been a great, "go to" big tire size for a Jeep running factory axles, there's been a growing demand for something, just a little bigger. Fortunately, Nitto has been listening and as of today, they're now offering their ever popular Ridge Grapplers in a 38x12.50 and for a standard 17" wheel. That means, most any Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator owner can run them on their rig and without having to buy a new set of larger wheels.
    As luck would have it, Nitto was nice enough to send Cindy and I a set of these awesome hybrid tires, ahead of the official release and for the purposes of testing and review. In this video, you'll get to see what they look like, how they measure up, how much they weigh and how to get them installed on a brand new set of KMC Tank Beadlock wheels.

    Gladiator owners, be aware that the largest tire that can fit on your spare wheel well is the 37. Just a helpful tidbit.

      Yea and that is barely fit, from brand to brand.

      I'm surprised that 37's would even fit at all I didn't even try my 37x20" in the spare area. I just left the 33" in there for now. I'm probably going to mount mine standing mounted to the bed rail in the truck bed or maybe even on the tail gate.

      Smart man. Never get a tire size to big for the spare to fit

    • @rubicon4wheeler
      @rubicon4wheeler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rockie307 if you're not integrating your spare tire into a 5-tire rotation, it oftentimes doesn't really matter if it's a little undersized. Sure, you'll get some driveline windup in 4WD, but with your other 3 tires still aired down and your "undersized" spare fully inflated, they'll have pretty much the same rolling radius. You won't want to have mismatched sizes on an axle with a limited-slip differential for a long drive home from the trail, but if you do happen to damage a tire on the trail an undersized spare will certainly get you home. Just like on a car with its little donut "space saver" spare; temporary use only.

      @rockie307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rubicon4wheeler I always have a full size tire and wheel. Where I ride you can be down a trail 8 hours from a town with a tire store. I do a 5 tire rotation. For me getting out is more important then looking cool in town so I'm limited to 35.3 tall tire that barely fits under my truck

    Very nice work there Eddie. Passing on your knowledge via these vids is a BIG plus to the off road community. Obviously no one is born knowing and we all have to learn one way or another , I like to learn the easy way whenever possible. I realize it is to your advantage to have vids that get a lot of views but I also realize you don't have to take the time to teach on any vid as your wheeling trails vids do just fine so "Thanks" for these vids. A lot of people don't want to share their knowledge for one reason or another but as you know wheeling gets expensive fast and often so any DIY a wheeler can do is a major help. Thanks again. Very good vids, informative and no BS. Again , nice work.

  • @MtnBadger
    @MtnBadger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I'm running 35" Nitto Mud Grapplers as my regular tires on my big ol', 84 suburban. Lov'em. Surprisingly well/long/"quiet" tread wear on the street and bonzers off road.
    This 38" RG could be "the tire" for me in the future but, remember sports fans...
    Going to a 38" tire and schnazzy new wheels means a significant increase in "rotating mass" and the farther you get away from your axle, every inch of tire becomes exponentially more problematic to deal with (if you don't understand the term, don't buy the tires 'till you do).
    This means you'll need a brake set-up that will stop the mass from rotating when you want them to. Just my 35's provided a challenge for my 'burb's brakes..
    Also, 38" broaches the territory of "really hard on bearings." Like, new bearings every 10k miles, frequent.
    Rotating mass, off-camber leveraging, all kinds of terms and concepts get forgotten along the wayside when our eyes get bedazzled by such enticing beauty as these tires and wheels (yup, I want some).
    I'm not knocking them AT ALL and, as I said, they'll probably be my next choice but, do be aware of what it takes to make them "live happily ever after" on the ends of your axles or you might find yourself busted down in a rut or driving off a cliff because you can't make them stop turning.
    I know that you "know it all, long time enthusiasts" out there know all this, I don't need the trolling comments to tell me I'm stating the obvious. I'm saying this for the folks looking at this video with "wide eyes" who've not yet ventured into the realm of such big tire/wheel combos and don't realize everything involved with making the transition. And, to them, I'd say that 38's are about as big as you want to run as a streetable tire. Anything bigger is just too problematic to be cruising down the road at 50-60mph, which is about as fast as you'll get those things to go without *a lot* of extra work on your vehicle (no 40's or up, it's just too much weight and leverage).
    But, *this is just my opinion* as someone who's run 4x4s since the early 70s with my dad and has made a living as a certified tech, fixing a lot of the ensuing problems.
    Use all the info you can find in making your choices.
    There, did that appease everyone who might read this? 😆 Trolls look for any reason to tell you how washed up you are. 😀

      Just because I got sidetracked by a rampaging pet while trying to get that banged out under the sway of the pull of a 3am, full moon and forgot to include ring gear/pinion torque, thrust, "angle of the dangle" problems, as well as the need to upgrade the front hubs from factory to a good set of Warns, change wheel bearings, possibly u-joints and definitely brake pads every 10k mi. is *not* a reason to challenge my competency, that's pretty rude... Obviously, there's a need to assert some sort of dominance and stroke your ego by putting mine under some sort of "check..." Sorry about you inferiority complex.
      Instead, how about something simple, like "Hey there, I see no mention of ring gears, etc., might that not also be an issue?" or some such thing and see if I actually have a valid response or, I even simply acquiesce with sincere gratitude to your identifying a completely omitted thought in the process?
      Why do people always want to try to make themselves look better by trying to find a way to make the other guy look bad, rather than just say something like "Hey, don't forget about this or, that as well. It might be important, don't you think??"
      But, a little civility is a bit too much to hope for these days, so it would seem.
      It's because I know that I'm no longer perfect in my recall with the TBI/PTSS trauma catching up, after getting my bell rung one (or a dozen) too many times back in my days in a combat munitions unit rearing its ugly head, not to mention a good dose of industrial grade insomnia... *And* the afore mentioned, over enthusiastic "lap invaders" from the isle of Labrador, that I made note that I may get some comments about something I may have missed along the way. I was pretty sure id get a least one... No need to be a prick about it.

      @@MtnBadger So your definition or expectations of society Civility doesn't include Maturity huh?
      Ok, since you responded so mature and humble to only making a slip of mind.
      I think you got on here thinking you're the old dog to teach this guy something he doesn't know or "got sidetracked" to mention, and instead you were shown you don't seem to know a basic elementary point just as important as the ones you mentioned and you can't take it. It's not a matter of civility but of correction accountability, which is Most absent in society towards those who speak as though they're the ones to be heard of their teaching. So when the teacher or self proclaimed one messes up, you get corrected and rightly doubted for your knowledge, you throw a fit and have all manner of excuses rather than a simple admission "yeah I should have said that too."
      Now, if you were the old dog and the Humble dog you should be, your reply would have went Much different. But it didn't, so now this behavior you've also shown you're Insecure and likely here trying to get acceptance and validation that you don't get person to person.

      Nope, I just think that you couldn't make a respectful, productive comment/reply (if you did, I'd have gladly responded in kind and greatfully acknowledged your input) if your life depends upon it. And criticizing me about "my words??" Your command of the language leaves *a lot* to be desired, to be chastising someone else about their speech. And, as I said, I'd have been *more* than happy to accept your input and say "thanks for the input..." if you didn't start the same way you finished, with an insult and calling someone incompetent for not doing something to *your* expectations, not to mention calling them a socisl reject.
      I'm not thr one who seems to need to be "validated" with everything they say if everything someone says in a post has, by your statement, to be verified for 100% accuracy, with *no* omissions or errors for fear you'll look foolish and proofread *twice over* for any mistakes before hitting "post," you have a serious lack of understanding/connection to what is going on here on this sight *and,* the overall context of my statement. That's *ridiculous* to expect from everyone here and, to belittle and badger someone, just because they didn't post a comment that meets *your* expectations!? That is absolutely *not* the way to get their acquiescence and accept your input.
      And your comment is, again, so disjointed that you don't make much sense whilst beating me on the head about communication. If you want to go *that* hard at someone, for missing *one* point when making a generalized statement, try picking up a basic grammar book and figure out how to make a proper sentence and, while you're at it, maybe re-examine the nature of the forum here.
      I told you right off the bat that if you'd been nice and not been nasty and jumped down my throat for what really doesn't count as an "oversight" that id have accepted your input. But, since the involvement of making those changes is so much greater than that, typing out the whole process to be "100% inclusive" is realistically prohibitive, not to mention contextually unnecessary. In other words, "they get the picture."
      . You, instead, have to make the person feel like an incompetent boob then, set yourself up as "the smart one" and, subjugate the other person in order to stroke your own ego and garner the awe and admiration of the masses (well, at least the couple poor souls who actually read this).
      All I did was tell my side, a bit colorfully which is known as "humor" but, it's also the truth and made it known that I'm not an idiot, even though you essentially accused me of being one right out of the gate, simply because i failed to mention one particular part when giving fair warning about people's eyes getting "too big for their belly" when buying big tires because, theres *a lot* involved that most people don't realize and have to learn the hard way, as a consequence to getting excited and jumping in blind, like ball joints going out at 10 mi.,, too and the need for a replacement idler arm with a lift, etc., etc...
      If I can just help them realize the fact that there's more to it than meets the eye and that they should look into it *before* they buy, that's the whole point. Mission accomplished!
      Naming every single part that may be affected, in *this* venue, is truly superfluous. "They get the picture..."
      Did you expect me to just piss down my leg and fall over, belly up when you made your statement?? lol I don't think so, buddy.
      But, being as you love to take things i said and twist them and bloviate about it (and everything else), finding *great* need to insult people and, judging by that rant, have *no* sence of humor *or* humility *or* self assurance and you can't stand it when someone calls you out on your bullshit.
      And the juvenile statement about my being here for the connection because I can't make friends, etc.?? When I was being nice in my comments, just trying to share a little knowledge in that someone might find it helpful?? That's just lashing out like a little boy and you accused *me* of the temper tantrum? You might re-read your own raving about how to get things "right" before I post, like I'm turning in my thesis.
      I'm not the one so lost in seriousness and the belief that my insulting someone from my first breath should be humbly accepted with endless gratitude for being "set straight. Do you understand the meaning of the word "audacity?" (Or, sarcasm?) Sheesh.
      Being "right" has *nothing* to do with it, at this point, even if you're 100% right...
      You're first reply was unnecessarily insulting, demeaning and accusatory, just for the sake of sticking a needle in someone's side to watch them squirm and calling it "entertainment" then expecting them to cow-tow and be greatful for it?? Seriously!?? And I called you on it because, I'm not a schoolyard push-over that takes stupid crap like that, groveling and thanking you for the opportunity to be humiliated.
      It seems like enough people do, however, judging by your continued, *irrational* attacks. Too bad for them for not seeing through you but, I digress...
      I understand about the parts of a 4x4, I've been working on them since the 70s and my old, D200 Power Wagon and have my ASE certs to show for it *but,* I have a distracted moment and don't cover everything *you* deem "absolutly critical" to the conversation so, therefore... I'm incompetent. Sure, that's fine, I'm an idiot... It's so nice to know that you've never made an omission in *anything* you've ever said. That's so comforting to know you're there, waiting in the wings to slap us down for the egregious error of forgetting something, ready to set us straight at a moments notice and we'd *damn* sure better be greatful for it..
      Anyone who reads these comments understands that your just an egotistical bully with nothing better to do in life. I don't need to explain anything, you have done a fine job of it all on your own.
      And... The true nature of the beast comes out. You were right. *Troll* is a good tittle for you.

    What is the actual height mounted and on the jeep? I was considering 38 inch patagonias for a true 37, but would like to know the comparison.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off, NO tire measures what is stated on the sidewall. Second, when manufactures of suspension systems or even axle upgrades talk about tires size, they are referring to what is written on the sidewall and NOT what the "actual" tire size is. That being said, mounted on a wheel, aired up and NOT installed on a Jeep with the full weight of it on it, this tire measures from crown to crown, about 36.5". That's a full inch taller than a 37" Trail Grappler mounted and aired up and measured in the same way as well.

Easy 1-inch increase to 33" over the factory 32" Firestone Destination MT's (255/75-17). I prefer 100 miles of forest road over 5 miles of rock crawling, so going from C rated Firestone's to E rated Nitto's will give me much more puncture resistance peace of mind while exploring forests and deserts here in Arizona. Had these & hated them. Don’t know what their point is. They aren’t sticky & don’t flex great in rocks, they are terrible on wet/ice/slush. They are heavy and ride harsh. You still have to swap them out for snow tires, might as well run the trail grapplers.

    • @wayalife

      @@TJ-po9ol LOL - I didn't realize that you have a monopoly on "most people". What I will admit is that I've seen these tires perform out on the trail and have always been impressed with how well they did being that they weren't a mud terrain. Guys like Mel from EVO and Dave from Synergy killed obstacles with them where tires made by other manufacturers couldn't even begin to hook up. And, this was in places like Maine where the rocks were slick as snot. th-cam.com/play/PLgwBN5w3KUZxlkDtaN4N5lMkI7iH0W5hE.html
      It is the ONLY reason why I'm giving them a try now and this as opposed to their new 38x13.50R17 Trail Grappler that I could have run instead. But I get it, yours is clearly the only opinion that matters and mine has to be some kind of sugar coating because of my relationship with Nitto, something I didn't have to openly disclose and right from the get go. Mr wayalife, you just said, you've been installing beadlocks for the past 20yrs, yeah, I didn't know some of this technology has been around for 20yrs, but when you stop to think about that kinda time period, it seems like a huge mass of people would've had a petition signed by 100s,1000s of people in order to try and beadlocks pushed to be legitimate for normal highway road use, because of the way they are designed, I don't see a dam thing wrong with them being road legal, and I have tried to look for the law of the government regulations, well, I couldn't find anything regulating against them, so why do they have to be factory printed, for off road use only, that's bullshit,

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is about liability and the enormous cost to have something like a beadlock wheel tested to be DOT approved. There are a couple of wheels out there that have done this, Hutchinson is one and I'm pretty sure there's at least one other. I should note that beadlocks today are a LOT safer than they were 20 years ago.

    • @wayalife

      It depends on whether or not you're willing to trim your fenders. Even with a trim, I would say no less than 4" of lift is needed. As far as gears go, the proper ratio would be 5.13 but I would ONLY do this IF you have a Rubicon or a front 44. On a Dana 30, the pinion will be too small and it will be a point that will break.

      Actually, we found that the weight is about the same as a 37" Trail Grappler mounted on a similar wheel. Only a 2-3 lb. difference. Also, the ride is much nicer being that they are C. Rubicon axles should be able to hold up just fine so long as you do not run a gear ratio higher than 5.13.

    Great video. You make it look so easy. So ummmm. (looks down and kicks dirt) how much for the old 37s and wheels you took off?

      LOL - Thank you. Regarding the wheels, we'll be keeping them for possible future use on Pippi. The tires, we might sell them.

      Sorry, I no longer have this Jeep. However, I did have my coilovers set to about 4.5" of lift.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. And no, it's not too soon. Got a lot of miles on them now and I love them. Hope to find some time to do a proper review soon.
