- Yamaguchi City was selected by the New York Times as the third best city to visit in 2024.
Here are some popular sightseeing spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture that are not within the city limits, along with drone footage.
■Tsunoshima Bridge
The Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge, familiar from commercials.
The contrast between the white sandy beach and the cobalt blue sea makes for a spectacular view spot.
The bridge is 1,780 meters long and is one of the longest bridges on a public road that can be crossed for free in Japan.
■Motonosumi Shrine
It takes about 40 minutes by car from the Kakunoshima Bridge and about 1 hour from the Miya IC of the Chugoku Expressway.
It is a privately owned shrine whose bright red torii gate has become a hot topic on SNS.
It is not accessible by public transportation, but the view overlooking the Sea of Japan is truly otherworldly.
■Akiyoshidai
Akiyoshidai, located in the central-eastern part of Miya City, is anyway a vast national park.
It is one of the largest karst plateaus in Japan.
The limestone that makes up the magnificent landscape of Akiyoshidai was created as a coral reef in the southern sea 350 million years ago, and after many years formed the karst plateau as we know it today.
■Akiyoshido
Akiyoshidai National Park is home to Akiyoshido Cave, one of the largest limestone caves in Japan, which stretches 100 meters below the ground in the southern part of the park.
Both Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido are designated as special natural monuments.
The sightseeing course in the cave takes about one hour, and the cool air and natural formations are so varied that you will never get bored.
