My dad always sang Jean to me as a kid, so when they made my adoption complete at 9yrs old I was allowed to change my name. Instead, I made my middle name Jean. That was 40 yrs ago. Dad is now with Jesus and I know he's still singing it to me. Love, your Bonny Jean.

@@seed1usa865 Me too. And 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' is still one of my favourite films! Which was where I first heard it, in the Burnt Oak Odeon cinema, during the school holidays of circa 1971, it being the second film on the programme. It turned out to be the one I preferred, instead of the main feature my friend and I actually went to see, which was 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'! Oh to be able to go back to those happy days...

@@veganpitstafflover So much better than "Butch Cassidy." Thank goodness Dame Maggie Smith got to do the movie and win that Oscar. The song says so much about her character as well -- avoiding the truth in her relationships. An honest, strong hard look. Shame she was in a predicament and had all the wrong notions about politics, enemies, fascists, etc.

I recently read an article about Rod McKuen. The most interesting takeaway: McKuen died in 2015. The rights to his recorded work then passed on to Ed Habib, his partner. Habib died in 2018; McKuen's rights and master tapes then passed on to Habib's family. Evidently, the Habib family either can't agree on what to do with McKuen's tapes or simply don't care about them. Whoever was storing the tapes for McKuen got tired of holding onto them. All of McKuen's master tapes---twenty years of music and spoken word material---were literally marked for destruction.
At this point, a gentleman (I don't recall his name; the article was in Slate magazine online) involved in the recording industry, who'd been a McKuen fan as a teenager, heard of the fate of McKuen's master tapes and intervened. He purchased the master tapes and they are now safe in storage. But the story doesn't end there. Edward Habib's heirs don't own the tapes, but they still own the rights to the music and spoken word material on them. And as I wrote earlier, they are either in conflict over what to do with this content or are simply indifferent to it. So you won't find McKuen's music or poetry streaming anywhere. And those tapes, as of this writing, aren't being used to make new cd's or LPs. They're just sitting in storage. The recording industry guy has tried to donate the tapes to the Library of Congress and several universities, with no success. It's a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances.
So for now, all that's left are TH-cam videos like this and old LPs, cassettes or cd's in second-hand stores. This is how the work of an artist dies. And that's a shame.

I totally agree with "rodmckuenfan." Rod's versions of his songs are always better than any other singer can possibly perform them...with Jimmie Rodgers being the only other singer who really can do them justice. Rod's voice has such warmth and tenderness, such a vulnerability to it that I'm left breathless.

Thanks, Shirley. I totally agree. Rod really was an auteur, a true chansonnier. I've been slowly putting together a documentary about him. I've really enjoyed learning about his fascinating life, and I want to show that to other people out there.

"Jean" makes me happy and, melancholy. It reminds me of the one girl I have spent years looking for. The last I saw of her was just before I left out to Vietnam (1970). We were in love and, tho I am very married to a woman I love dearly, I am still in love with (Marty, Martha). Jean, Jean, roses are red
All the leaves have gone green
And the clouds are so low
You can touch them, and so
Come out to the meadow, Jean
Jean, Jean, you're young and alive
Come out of your half-dreamed dream
And run, if you will, to the top of the hill
    Open your arms, bonnie Jean
'Til the sheep in the valley come home my way
'Til the stars fall around me and find me alone
When the sun comes a-singin', I'll still be waitin'
For Jean, Jean, roses are red
And all of the leaves have gone green
While the hills are ablaze with the moon's yellow haze
Come into my arms, bonnie Jean
    Jean, you're young and alive
Come out of your half-dreamed dream
And run, if you will to the top of the hill
Come into my arms, bonnie Jean
    Jean

Beautiful song, but I can totally understand why it lost to "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" (Bacharach-David, originally performed by BJ Thomas) for 1970's Best Original Song Oscar. Love songs rarely win because there's just so many of them compared to songs about other things.

Jean. Jean. My roses turned green. All my tulips have three lips. And I'm at a loss; I don't know what to do. Give me a clue, bonny Jean.

I think you're onto something regarding Rod's half spoken/half sung style influencing rap. Although Rod may not be releasing much new music anymore, he is still very active. Lately, he's been busy remastering and re-releasing his old LPs onto CD. He just released Sold Out at Carnegie Hall and Listen to the Warm on CD. Also, he occasionally still tours at 79 years old! A few years ago, he did a handful of live concerts. He's still writing poetry, and he's very active on his website.

This song has something in common with "Mrs. Robinson" in THE GRADUATE: it's a great song in itself but it hasn't a blessed thing to do with the character it refers to.
