  • Finally! The long awaited living fence is going in. Subscribers asked for it and I'm delivering! We're going with Malabago or Sea Hibiscus, a flowering tree that is good for pollen and nectar for the bees and makes a great wind break. We also spend time with our good friend Digoy who has a lot to say, even if I don't understand much of it. Jason, who I now call Dr Jason, is also back on the farm trying to get me to try his homemade elixir for strength and vitality. You'll have to watch to the end to learn more about that one. I hope you enjoy the show.

    very cool......I love it. I have thought about doing the same thing with bamboo......plant it in a long line on the property line. However, I'm told cobras like to live in bamboo.....still thinking it over.

      Hey Michael. I also love bamboo. I would love to cultivate it for a free building material. I’m pretty handy and would love to try to make a shelter from my own bamboo but like you, all the locals are telling me not to because of snakes. I hate snakes! I love bees, but snakes ain’t my thing. I trust my friends so the little bamboo I have can keep growing but I’m not adding more to it. I’m pretty excited about these living fence posts though. I can’t wait for them to grow and bloom. Take care my friend. I hope to hear from you again real soon. Keep the comments coming. God bless.

    One or two people should be able to use it to manually drill those post holes.

    • @beekeepinginparadise5935
      @beekeepinginparadise5935  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Eli. Yes what I showed in the video is my farm. Im not in a hurry to clear anything right now. Im learning that some of the plants are blooming. Even weeds that bloom can be a major food source for the bees and I don’t want to remove anything that may help them thrive and make a premium honey. Once I have an opportunity to see what blooms and what won’t through the year then I’ll be more comfortable cutting back weeds to beautify and clean up the landscape. For right now I’m observing and just making pathways to get where I want to walk safely. Beekeeping is a very different kind of farming. Thank you for the comment and support. God bless you always my friend.

    23:30 is a palm species. Quite a few birds get attracted by that thing's fruits once it bears fruit which comes in nice little bunches.
    the Tagbak at 27:00 is a member of the Zingiberaceae family, Alpinia elegans as far as I can remember. You're gonna have to ask manong Digoy again about it because that plant has edible bits. :)
    Drawing a blank on the Anunumpay though. hehe :D

    • @beekeepinginparadise5935
      @beekeepinginparadise5935  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s fascinating! Are the fruits edible for humans? I’m so glad you are able to tell me about this because the palm is absolutely elegant looking and one of the most beautiful trees on the property. And the Tagbak is growing like a weed everywhere. When the workers cleared the land they must have cut back a thousand of them because they were everywhere on the ground. If they are partially edible I’ll have to look into how to harvest some when more grow back. Thank you so much for the comment. I’m so grateful for the help. God bless.

    • @kswsquared
      @kswsquared ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beekeepinginparadise5935 With regard to that particular palm, I'm not too sure. Maybe there's nothing poisonous about it, but then you get to whether or not enough edible material can be had from it to make it worthwhile; if I recall those palms have small fruit in bunches. But you can definitely have aesthetic/decorative uses for it, like maybe lining the side of your access road in the future, or the path to the payag.
      I haven't personally tried it, but I think the fruit of the Tagbak is the edible part. They're quite hardy too and will keep propagating as long as the roots are intact. They love moist shady spots. I don't think it's a normal part of any Filipino delicacy, but it's nice to have an extra something edible at the farm. Anyway it's part of the family that includes Ginger and Turmeric.
      At the very least, that palm and the Tagbak are also bird attractors. I can already hear a couple of flowerpeckers in the background of your video; they were most likely hanging out in the part of the property that had a lot of undergrowth. :)

    • @beekeepinginparadise5935
      @beekeepinginparadise5935  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s exactly what I wanted to do but because the city was quarrying the river and running huge heavy dump trucks down the road to the river I can’t drive even close to my property anymore. The ruts are so deep and flooded from the rains that it’s impassable. My poor little multicab bottoms out on the rocks and can’t take the abuse anymore. It’s pretty sad. Merry Christmas my friend.
