When I was little, I used to refuse to leave the pediatricians office without hugging my doctor. Even if I was just getting seen by nurses for a flu shot, I'd walk to the back to say hello. He was a great doctor. Years later, when I was shadowing a surgeon in a surgery center, I saw him but didn't want to disrupt a busy man. I told my mom and she texted him to tell him I guess. When he found out I was at the surgery center, he drove back to the building on his lunch break and sat in the back with me and talked about my med school aspirations between two surgeries. Pediatrics isn't easy, but I've never met a doctor as kind and caring as my old pediatrician.
Edit: Just got a job working at his office for the summer so I can get clinical hours for medical school!!! I’m so excited!!!
Edit 2: I just received an early admissions offer for MED SCHOOL!!!! I’m a sophomore now, so it guarantees my matriculation into med school after I graduate! I can’t stop crying, I can’t believe I’m going to be a doctor!

My mom always loves to tell the story about how when I was little I came into the doctor really sick with pneumonia. Like any sick little kid, I didn't want someone poking me and I certainly didn't want to open my mouth so the doctor could see my throat. Instead of just calling in a nurse to restrain me and get the exam done, my pediatrician offered to do an exam on my stuffed animal first. She listened to his heart, did a reflex test, gave him a shot with a bandaid, and even diagnosed him with cataracts (he was very "well loved" and his plastic eyes were crackled). At the end she asked if I was ready for it to be my turn and lo and behold, I was suddenly very cooperative.
It was thanks to her that despite being in and out of the doctor's office often as a child (I had a good number of health issues), and despite my occasional fussiness, I never developed a fear of phobia of doctors.

Our dentist and hygienist did something similar with our two-year old son. I was examined first by the hygienist and our dentist wandered in during my exam and cleaning. We started talking about children's tv and the contents of the office treasure chest filled with toys. My son got to pick out FIVE toys while I was getting my exam. They were all discussing the quality of the toys and the options for toothpaste flavors, like chocolate and bubble gum! By the time my exam was finished, my son, the hygienist and the dentist were all old friends. Since we were there and since my son had seen ahead of time what a dental exam entailed, he felt comfortable getting into the chair and letting the hygienist brush his teeth with the special flavored tooth paste. Then, since the dentist "happened" to be there, my son was proud to show the dentist his new teeth and to let the dentist "count" his teeth. My son has never developed a phobia of dentists either.

@@nanaabdulkadir3114 it is confusing, after 3 years of basic training in general paediatrics you can go directly into subspeciality cardiology training and become a paediatric cardiologist but if you finished 6 years of General paediatric training (including 3 yrs of advanced training), I think equivalent to “hospital paediatrician training in North America” and then do cardiology training, you become both a general paediatrician qualified to work as a general paediatrician in hospitals and a paediatric cardiologist which I’ve done and many here in Australia choose to do. A little late to the party but I will never forget when i was interning for a couple of weeks in neuropediatrics, we had a 6-year old with GBS - she had lost the ability to walk in just a couple of days, was always in pain and crying. There was a a resident who looked quite overworked most of the time, didn't smile a lot and one day, we were sitting in the residents' room doing paperwork when the other resident came from outside opening the door and said "Dr. x, someone is here to see you" and in walked the little girl smiling and holding her mother's hand then she limped on her own to the desk he was sitting at and his face immidiately lit up when he saw her then she hugged him. The scene kept playing in my head for weeks after and I still remember it and smile from ear to ear.

My pediatrician was always someone i trusted so much. When I was little, I always loved seeing him despite being normally shy. When I turned 16 and finally told him I was feeling anxious and depressed, I was scared he wouldn't take me seriously because when I had panic attacks to the point I was in the hospital afraid I was dying, I always thought I annoyed the staff (and I get maybe I did) he just hugged me and said "I've known you since you were a baby, so don't be afraid or anxious around me, I'm always here to help." Sweetest man ever

    • @elikeenan136
      @elikeenan136 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Honey: When you are so panicked that you are in the hospital, then you deserve to be welcome there. You are not a burden or an annoyance. My mom works in a pediatric ER and when kids come in who are having some sort of non-body problem (in kid talk: scared or sad or mad) they are welcome and all the nurses wish is that there was a concrete treatment they could give.
Your experiences are valid, you are important, mental health is health.
Feeling like you were going to die is a perfectly good reason to access health care. 🌻

Surgical Technology is the best job ever!!!
In school we relearn everything from kindergarten, like how to count. How to get dressed and help dress others. What to call all our toys, how to share our toys and how to ask for more. We also learn how to clean up after ourselves.
Then, in practice, we get to hand everything to someone else and (quietly) tell them here, you do it. We ask for things and the circulator has to get it for us. Then at the end of the case I always think wow, I won that round, let’s play again!

This will prolly get lost in your comments since your a pretty popular channel (and rightly so), but I’m a pediatrician that has been working in the UC and ED all of COVID. It’s been tough balancing evidence based medicine with parental decisions. I honestly want to do what’s medically best for every patient I see, but it becomes complicated by parental concerns/wishes/preconceived expectations. It also can be difficult to truly weed out/assess the validity of the Hpi depending on the parents.
If I’m honest I think my residency was easier than my best friends who did anesthesia and surgery.
However as of now they alll agree with me that me/ER/family medicine are having a harder time right now then they are.

My Dad was a pediatrician for 40 years. He passed away about a year ago. Whenever I come back to visit the town he practiced in, folks still tell me how much they loved seeing him when they were growing up. Not many of them got to see the "need to be in three places at once" dynamic, but at least a few must've known.

Ya got me in the feels man...
That hug at the end of the day...thats what keeps us coming back. Worked with adults and kids with developmentaly disabilities and delays. At the end of the shift covered in urine and bruised from handling a 40 minute behavior of a guy bigger than you, sitting in a Mandt hold on the for 20 of it in his urine after he through you up against the wall going after another resident that sneezed in a scary way...then having to change and continue teaching your class of 40 year olds how to brush their teeth the same you have every day for 5 years. Then do 45 minutes of charting and 15 on the behavior trying to explain what caused it and how i or the other staff could have avoided the scary sneeze from a guy in another room. To have one one of the residents come up and give you one of the most REAL hugs you will ever get in your life.... and make sure you are coming back tomorrow.... thats why we did. Those hugs...sure wasn't the money or the 'hum' grateful bosses for covering 2 extra shifts rhat week or bureaucracy of state and federal mandates and rules the contridicted each other and/or made absolutely no frigging sense with situation we were working with... it wasn't the supervisors appreciation for how sore and hurt you where or how you missed lunch and came in early so you didn't get breakfast so it was working on about 20 hours since you ate. ... nope it was those hugs right there....

I don’t know about hospital pediatrics but I LOVE my children’s pediatrician. He keeps a binder of vaccine evidence in every room with a one page article that is well written in layman’s terms followed by more information about studies. His NP is amazing and he just got a PA as well meaning now 3 people who can treat kids in a small private office, plus his fantastic staff. The amazing thing he does that no other doctors have done (in my experience) is when we have needed specialists he makes sure we are seen. When my son was 3 months old he had issues requiring a pediatric pulmonologist, they said the soonest we could be seen was in 2 weeks, he personally called the doctor and we received a call back that they would see us the next day. Another time I had a question about getting my kids tested for a genetic disease that causes kidney stones that I have, he wasn’t familiar with it and immediately pulled out his cell phone and texted a pediatric urologist to ask if we should see her for a work up. Recently my daughter was 12 and her arm wouldn’t stop hurting, it seemed like a nurse maid’s elbow (dislocated elbow common when small kids get yanked by the hand) they had us wait and when they came back had an address for a pediatric orthopedist and said they would fit us in when we showed up. Thank goodness it was a sprain according to x rays, I truly thought it was dislocated by the amount of pain she was in (I think it is possible it did dislocate but it popped back in when she grabbed it to cushion it, she has loose joints and extra flexibility/some double jointedness, we are working on strengthening with PT so her muscles can better protect her joints)

I saw many pediatricians as a kid, they seemed to be the only people who did not like me- I was an extremely lovable kid, everyone usually fawned over me. But I was also very sickly and had mysterious illnesses that they didn't believe, those illness have now been treated, but too little too late to prevent disability.
I only had one who was amazing, rather than ruin my life, he saved it a couple times. Not joking. Everyone at the clinic, the pediatricians, their assistants, the nurses, and the admittance crew were very sick of me coming in every day insisting a stitched wound on my finger was infected. Well he passed by out of curiosity, to see what the fuss was about after my 6th time. He IMMEDIATELY instructed my dad to drive me to the ER because it was faster than an ambulance, then called ahead to have the surgeon ready with a bag of IV antibiotics. Turns out the cut on my finger was going septic, and fast. Everyone else had been about to shoo me back out the door.
Every time I got to see him, when everyone else in the clinic was too busy or didn't want to bother with this trouble maker, I made the most progress on my health. He was even more than willing to prescribe me birth control for my, what i now know is, endometriosis. He obviously thought I was lying about my reason for asking, but was still very supportive - if it were appropriate he would have given me a thumbs up. No one else in that clinic would have given it to me (i was 15).
