    Hi Merijn,
The difference lies in the official definition in SOLAS.
Private yachts originally could carry up to 12 people; this does not make them enter into a passenger ship category. Indeed they are the same as cargo ships, which is why the Class certificates are cargo ship certificates. Cargo ships are allowed up to 12 pax.
Passenger ships, according to SOLAS, are divided into two categories: 36 pax and under, and more than 36 pax. These, by definition, are passenger (cruise) ships.
As yachts increasingly got larger, and the market need was there, yacht regulations (initiated by CISR) decided that they should be some kind of crossover from SOLAS for yachts and this became the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC). PYC certified yachts are able to carry up to 36 guests. They are yachts under the code.
Any floating ship, yacht, whatever you want to call it, that carries more than 36 guests is immediately a passenger ship (cruise ship).
And some yachts that carry up to 36 guests are actually 'real' SOLAS passenger ships (Christina O, for example, to name just her, and many others in that market).
    All the best,
    Fabien

Hey Fabien - thanks for your feedback and good point. The SOLAS definition is purely based on rules and safety, which is extremely important, however it does not say anything about the ownership and how you can use the vessel. So technically for SOLAS they could be passenger ships, but for the industry (and clients) they are still called yachts.

Absolutely agree. Great analogy of a superyacht with a villa.

Fantastic episode Meijn, I love the comparison between the vessels and real estate and it makes absolute sense. I look forward to more of these videos.

You are right. Somnio would be an awesome yacht if it was built for one owner and not 54 or whatever it will carry. Otherwise it is just a small cruise ship or passenger boat.

Actual luxury trends when it comes to leisure are overlaping themselves. Explanation in the video is super good, but following the analogy with the hotels, many vilas turned into rural hotels and here is where it comes the mess for the general public. My conclusion of the video is that at the end, there are 2 main differences: who is the onwer and what are the intentions of the vessel (whether is a yacht or a cruise ship). Following the example, a vila has an owner that could decide to rent it whereas a rural hotel is a small luxury infrastructure who targets general public. A cruise needs by law to have a speciffic itinerary, superyacht does not need to have that. Is "free" to sail sort to say... just an opinion. I really liked the video! thanks!

Really great video, for me I view Somnio and other similar vessels as residential cruise ships, especially with multiple ownership tiers.

You have a strong point probabably why they kept on saying its a yacht its for publicity or perhaps broke some records like the longest yacht etc. Yachts i should say is something in private you dont have neighbors next door you owned the whole vessel move freely.. therefore we can call or consider REV as a floating laboratory a research vessel not a luxury yacht

I'd avoid the whole shebang and use the best dodge in the book. Research or Survey Vessel. No restrictions on passengers (because as a research ship you can call them crew) and who is to say/know what kind of "research" you are doing? Researching the sun's rays while I lay on the sunbed or seeing how the hot tub affects vessel stability.

A yacht that offers 15 million dollar apartment is not an experience for everyone, but i understand what you mean. Most of the famous known megayachts, are really not that many, and thats because they are unbelievably expensive to maintain, and to purchase has well. Dilbar os just ridiculous, that is a private cruise ship, very few people can, and even less would find it reasonable. Tech guys are not flashy like that, because that seems boastful, not good for image 😅.
These commercial megayachts are really smaller cruise ships, catering to more people.

I agree, lets have some rules categories clearly made up so its clear for everyone.
I hate when superyachts are called megayachts or worse gigayachts.
    Enjoyed your video, thank you.
