It's keeps me cold and awake in the winter. I've had it for three nights now and it's frightening when the truck starts all by itself till you remember the idle thing.
Worst designed system in trucking. Unbelievable that a massive truck manufacturer could collectively come up with such an inefficent, joke of a heating/cooling system.
And my 2016 Freightliner only used about 6 1/2 gallons of fuel for a 10 hour break. It's not like in the old days where you burn a gallon a hour. So how does starting and stopping and getting woke up safe and how does that save fuel?
To bypass simply set the optimized idle to cool in the winter and heat in the summer and set its temp above or below whatever temp the cab will be. It has no control over the actual hvac system so it will just keep running indefinitely trying to do the opposite of what the actual hvac is set at.
still seems more difficult then my old cascadia that had 8 gel batteries. havent saved any fuel yet with this system just lots of idle detroit, if its more complicated than press this one single button you've failed #IMO
This video was very helpfull. I was just issued a Cascadia with optimized idle and had no idea how to operate it. My old truck had a Thermoking APU so it all seemed rather complicated at first. After this video though, I now have an understanding of the optimized idle and find that it's not much different from having an APU. Thanks for sharing!
My version of optimized idle was running the truck at 900 RPM It was awesome yeah I paid for the fuel but I didn't give a hoot considering that I woke up nice and easy truck was already and a truck is like let's haul ass But in all honesty I did run cleaners through it and what not and the whole DPF problems everyone says they have when idling is pretty much non-existent if you high idle it and you run some DPF cleaner at least once a month heavy on the first time you do it and then just do it once a month and you're good never had an issue Of course I get the DPF light no big deal I pushed a button the truck whines up I already have my clothes on went inside come out after Getting Coffee truck idled right back down and I looked at the truck and said what the hell is that all about and then I thought about it for about 10 minutes and I realize that Detroit put a Fail-Safe that after 10 hours of idling it automatically wanted to clean the filter But it was never a problem boy with that truck pull Now if I shut it off and woke it up and let it run for about 5 minutes it didn't like that
This isn’t the idle air system of previous models A simple rocker switch on dash set the system with no engine running for up to 9 hours but park smart was part of it. That was the best idle less enviro system ever designed . But it would fail at about 280,000 miles costing 8 ooo to replace. I suspect an American debugging of Chinese crap parts would be the solution
Mine has the same problem. Just goes to show that companies care more about their precious gas than the comfort of the people that operate their equipment and make them money. Just garbage
Drew Morgan are you guys having bunk heater problems? Every other driver complaints about having that issue, also do you guys have your trucks jump started often sorry for the intergoatin my friend currently works for a trucking company not as a driver but dispatch and would like to get some feed back from drivers all across the states
Bunk heaters are unhooked they are junk and didnt work half the time. No problems with starting or battiers keeping charge that i know of but most of us dont have inverters we run regional.
Drew Morgan oh really my friend says most drivers always request a jumpstart because they leave there bunk heaters on or leave on idle causing batteries to die, he asked what company you work for might be the same one
I thought mine wasn’t working and had to do it backwards . Meaning I set the idle first and then turn on cruise control and it works . Took me forever to figure this out . If your light isn’t coming on drivers, just idle it high first THEN press the cruise control button
Doesn't work.... Freightliner said they got it to work, it doesn't!! Did everything over & over & over same outcome. Never shuts off just keeps running on the high idle setting as stated in this video. Ck list: start engine, shifter in neutral in high range, cruise on/off then on again....no idle management indication, turn op-idle bunk controls to cool and desired temp setting (a modest 72°) it's showing still on, but...?? Turn off/on cruise again.... Nothing!! Not a good system. Refund Plea$e!!!

admorris11 that’s why I use thermo king apu on my truck for bunker ac/heat lol 😂
Haven't gotten any sleep with this. Starts up rocks the truck shuts off your either freezing or hot.

I follow it to a T n nothing what gives what are we doing wrong
Love going to sleep with cold ac and waking up in the morning about 20 degree warmer , guess it’s a new system to make you wanna get outta bed lol
Mine doesn't turn on the optimized idle.
Mine either
temp set at 70 it's currently 82 in cab still no restart
Same thing here. I have watched this video over and over and still have to get up and start the truck.
I cranked it all the way to 78 last night, it never got over 65. Cold night.
Loool. Shot at Werner Enterprises in Springfield OH.
I tried this and it didn't work for me.
Me neither

Did it ever have any mechanical issues doing that?
I can't get my optimized symbol to even come on at all except in cycle
I hate this shit truck stops & starts all f**king nite wakes you up each time.
still seems more difficult then my old cascadia that had 8 gel batteries. havent saved any fuel yet with this system
just lots of idle
detroit, if its more complicated than press this one single button you've failed #IMO
Does this make this truck legal to park overnight in states like PA where no idle laws are in effect?
Awesome question. I use a CPAP and dont have an APU so I have to run my engine all night.
Our trucks if you pop the hood and idle engine up just a little with cruse control it wont shut off
How to set it for automatic?
Im Tee same method, truck in neutral, hit cruise. And follow same steps.
I’ve had two of these trucks that had the optimize idle thing work for about five minutes and quit it’s more trouble than it was worth
You know you can go to Freightliner or any shop with a Detroit Diesel program and get the auto-shutdown turned off.
It’s like parking right beside a reefer trailer the engine is off & On. That will keep waking me up.
Opti idle sucks. I freeze in winter and fry in summer. Have for a few years. No one can fix it.
This video was very helpfull. I was just issued a Cascadia with optimized idle and had no idea how to operate it. My old truck had a Thermoking APU so it all seemed rather complicated at first. Our trucks have opt idle *and* an APU.

Of course I get the DPF light no big deal I pushed a button the truck whines up I already have my clothes on went inside come out after Getting Coffee truck idled right back down and I looked at the truck and said what the hell is that all about and then I thought about it for about 10 minutes and I realize that Detroit put a Fail-Safe that after 10 hours of idling it automatically wanted to clean the filter
But it was never a problem boy with that truck pull
Now if I shut it off and woke it up and let it run for about 5 minutes it didn't like that
What if you have a auto
I have an automatic ...dont know how to use opt idle either!

Pos we got on 8 trucks and it shuts truck down but never starts them back up
Mine has the same problem. Just goes to show that companies care more about their precious gas than the comfort of the people that operate their equipment and make them money. Just garbage
On ours you can pop the hood open and idle up engine just barely and it stays running
Drew Morgan are you guys having bunk heater problems? Im doing what you said but it wont cut back on and my light is on once truck cut off but it wont kick back on?
I thought mine wasn’t working and had to do it backwards . Meaning I set the idle first and then turn on cruise control and it works . Took me forever to figure this out . If your light isn’t coming on drivers, just idle it high first THEN press the cruise control button
Nvm not working now 😢
Great job on the video👍🏻
Why is this so confusing?
Its a damn Nazi Concentration Camp in this bitch. Feels like I'm trapped in an attic.
Than you this was helpful
YOU WILL LOOSE SLEEP. YOU WILL EITHER FREEZE OR BURN UP
SUMMER YOU WILL WAKE UP IN A SWEAT BOX SO UNCOMFORTABLE
My 16 freightliner has stickers for optimize idle but for the life of me it won’t turn on 😡
Do not set the the tractor brake, only the trlr
Doesn't work.... Freightliner said they got it to work, it doesn't!! Did everything over & over & over same outcome. Never shuts off just keeps running on the high idle setting as stated in this video.

Pretty typical. As usual designed by people that have never had to make their living driving a truck. It is a very inconvenient system.
Really I thought you had to have your hood open for this to work😂😂
Doesnt work on mine too this is such a crap of a system
Doesn't work
Doesnt work for my truck.
Thanks for the feedback! We are really glad this video could help!
Does systems preserve your DEF system?
This doesnt even work
Wait, Detroit Diesel actually makes trucks? I thought it was just an Engine Industry
Why so complicated? Total CRAP.
These "instructions" are terrible.
Just pick up a homeless girl and you won’t be cold anymore 😏
