  • Let's watch part 2 of UNORTHODOX. Last year, Netflix came out with a series based on an autobiography of Deborah Feldmen. As an ex Catholic Priest who ran away from my strict religious community (SSPX), I immediately connected with the protagonist: Etsy. Here we go with the second part and explore the many memories which the series brought up.

The bridal purification ceremony made me so uncomfortable 😣
I was reminded of how it felt to be in my body while I was a part of the sspx. My body didn't feel like it belonged to me and yet I was also a prisoner inside of it.
I also had a strong reaction to that line about how this woman left her group because God asked too much from her. I felt the same way. I was complying to all of these group requirements because I was taught that it was what God wanted. In reality, it was what the people in the group wanted and they were twisting holy words and teachings to get the desired result.

I understand that. I felt the same about my body. Although there was no Catholic teaching that made our bodies “evil,” the constant condemnation of it as “the flesh” that brings temptations made me despise it.
And yeah… I don’t think it was “god,” but the god that was the creation of the community which demanded so much. 😔😔😔

@@iamjudasproject ...the usurpation that occurs when others speak "on behalf of God," to destroy a little one's love is gut wrenching. One has to wonder what God thinks of the whole affair. I surely do.

I really liked your commentary on this, have you reacted to the rest of the series? I would love to see it.
Most of my relatives are extremely religious and I can see so many parallels, God definitely asks too much sometimes.
I just found you through your midnight mass video, and I really like your content!

Glad you're still watching. This makes me feel sad for those souls left behind, tormented by expectations that, honestly, don't satisfy.

Some of the players are malicious because they know what they are doing, but most are just sheep - manipulated to stay in line and do what they believe is right.

@@iamjudasproject "Some of the players are malicious because they know what they are doing." This is so true. Sadly, true. I feel so poorly for those 'sheep' simply seeking a field of grass and not the Astro-Turf that is too often forced down their throats. (You can't know what real food is if you've never tasted it... and when you're starving--and scared--you'll eat almost anything.)
