she makes some good points about the state of dnb now. its all exaclty the same format and the exact same 64 bars then a breakdown. i miss the tunes being more drawn out and atmospheric and u never knew how long it would roll before the breakdown or the next drop. had more room to breathe.
It was highly experimental like most of the Electronic music way back then. Then the money came along and everyone started to sound the same. Any "new thing" is fresh until genre lines are being drawn and money mixed in.
I've kinda been asking around about this, and also DJs needed more time to switch between tracks with no loop feature so a lot of producers were likely conscious of that. Definitely were more atmospheric
Thankfully this notion is coming back, especially with tunes on Spatial, some of the recent Jungle however is all too chopped up, edits galore and no real ethos behind the music.
She's totally right High, squelchy, over synthesized, over layered Alot of newer stuff is too much noise, sound effects, messy drums, bass washed out by filters and effects
So true, Now I no I"m not alone in thinking the same thing. Its seems like in most forms of new modern electronic/sample based music the bass is so controlled and often non existent
Glad to see her profile is rising again after Boiler Room. She played new years eve in Edinburgh at the Bongo Club and totally smashed it. This is one of the better Red Bull interviews as she isn't scared to voice her opinions. I learned a lot about the politics of the scene. Hopes she back in Scotland soon.
Great Interview! I got into the scene around 97-98 as a sophomore in HS(time flies jeez); everything did feel more "authentic" back then for sure, so watching her comeback into the limelight again is awesome! Godspeed DJ Storm! R.I.P Kemi, Spirit & Marcus Intalex Thank you for everything 🙏🏾 BRING BACK AMEN BREAKS!
I've always loved Storm's mixes and I totally get her attitude toward building a set. Too many DJs these days just want to smash it the whole set- no dynamics, no variety, all the same style.
Saw Storm at return to Rage and she smashed it to bits. I completely agree with her in terms of a lot of contemporary stuff around nowadays. Even the jump up / liquid stuff that I was buying on and off back in 2006 / 7 was never as good as the earlier rolling stuff. And in 2006 I was a teenager having just bought my first set of decks, and even though the stuff I was buying back then has great memories, it still doesn't give me the same feeling as the earlier productions. The only sticking point these days for record collectors is the amount of money a lot of earlier releases are worth. Expect to pay upwards of £50 for anything worthwhile on Metalheadz or GLR these days! Old Fab & Groove tapes from their Kiss shows back in the early 90's is still an Aladdin's cave of tunes you'll still want to buy.
Dj Storm and her counterpart Dj Kemistry who died very early on in relation to the scene and its development were SERIOUS ARTISTS FROM THE START AND WITH THE METALHEADZ LABEL, THEIR STYLE WAS UNIQUE AND I AM CERTAIN THAT DJ KEMISTRY CONTINUES TO INSPIRE, SUPPORT AND CREATE THE SOUND FROM THE ASTRAL AND DJ STORM IS IN OUR DIMENSION AND KEMISTRY IS STILL FULLY THERE AND BRINGS SOMETHING FROM THE ASTRAL REALM WHICH IS A CYPHER FOR THOSE WHO CAN UNDERSTAND IT, she is creating sounds from a dimension that no one else is crossing in the d&b scene
I love storm. She was also one of my first hero's to dj drum & bass, her and kemistry. R.I.P Kemistry. I love Storms mixing style, smooth and flawless. Much respect to her and Metal Headz cru.
Still in the game and an inspiration to female musicians. Gonna make sure my granddaughter watches this and I'll be encouraging her to have fun with music....
This was so wonderful to watch, I grew up around that time listening to her and Kemistry. What she speaks is so much knowledge about Jungle/DnB that I feel is being forgotten or looked at as a old or obsolete. She's seen the progression from Acidhouse, to Hardcore, to Jungle/DnB I think many newer artists can learn a lot from her still. She speaks on things that I loved about it all, the focus was on the crowd, getting us moving and into it, making sure they played the right things to each crowd, taking a producers song and doing it justice, not making it focused on glorifying a superstar DJ. She knows her craft, she loves her craft, and I admire that, even after Kemi passed she kept going and I love that so much about her. Sadly I feel a lot of what she speaks on, the 2 step has been over used, amens, and other breaks need to be used more, and producers need to find their own sound, samples, and something that sets them apart to avoid everything from sounding the same.
I loved her talking about fanning out on John Aquavava and Ritchie Hawtin..most dnb djs would never claim to look up to a couple of minimalist house djs. RESPECT
Absolute legend, her sets are amazing, was fortunate to see her twice in New Zealand, performing in Sub Nine & Studio Nine in Wellington. Thankyou Storm, much respect.

Her death actually bought a unique aspect to the scene and the Artistic creation of KEMISTRY and STORM, THAT'S WHY THEIR MUSIC IS SO DEEP AND PROFOUND AND THERE IS MUCH KNOWLEDGE ONE CAN LEARN FROM IT..REFLECT!!
Drum and Bass is a reflection on Society and World Current Affairs as well as what's going on with Geopolitics and it picks up on the wavelengths throughout the planet and beyond..it echoes the energy from lay/fault/energy lines and when one looks at frequencies and their interpretations, then it becomes clear that how infinite is the source, the omnipresent and omnipotent, and how beautiful and dangerous is the enigma of existence..it's actually SCRIPTURE in synthesised rhythmic sounds and includes variables in unlimited data, numbers and consciousness..it's music with meaningful messages and REVELATION, conveyed through artistic creativity
You know her style as she draws for Digital, Paradox etc in her sets. Weight. And longing it out, with Tim Reaper and compatriots it’s getting back there, and gladly and rightfully so.
Rip kemistery !!! Just like to thank kemistery and storm for playing a few tracks in there dj sets produced by 2 of my friends elementz of noize !!!!! I’m sure they were proud they played there tracks !!!
50:43 I've been out of touch with DnB for a while, & just come back again. I've noticed that there's this newish, sub genre of DnB, that's very bubble gum, commercial, pop style, which to me has very little to do with the 'Liquid', 'Jump-up', 'Tech'. . . soulful, yet techy futuristic sound that I love. I don't class this commercial style as DnB, & it seems that, this crowd also don't like the proper Jungle, DnB style themselves? The sound & production is really tight, & glossy, but it just lacks the harder, soulful, rugged street realness. It's a bit like the street corner drug dealer, moving into Wall Street stock exchange, it doesn't work. Hope this rambling made some sense.
...if it doesn't move me in here... Amen lass. If the producer in question tune is that "hot" then someone else will surely play it for the crowd. Best to stick to what moves the crowd AND you. Too many play out what's hot but don't really have a passion for.
Also we need to stop this men/women thing, most men aren't brought up to be crazy about things(cars) that's just how most men are and most women aren't like that but you have a few who and Storm you are one of those. Jamie Lidell spoke to Susan Rogers(Princes producer) on his latest podcast and she was talking about how her recording production class was 15 to 1 male to female and how unlike her most girls just aren't interested in that kinda thing. What I'm saying is women should be allowed to do whatever job they want but you can't force everything to be 50/50 because the fact is most men and women are different and there is nothing wrong with that.
truth. i've been working part-time shifts in a electronic music record store for the last 20+ years and the very vast majority of our customers have always been male. this also goes for dj's when i still used to set up events and did radioshows... female dj's were rare back in the days in every genre but i never tried to book them for the reason of 'being female'. the criteria were the same as for every male dj - are they able to mix properly? does their specific style fit into the event / radioshow i had in mind? if both questions were answered positively they had a slot. radio was more open format stylewise than events were, naturally.

I love DJ Storm!
She's totally right
High, squelchy, over synthesized, over layered
Alot of newer stuff is too much noise, sound effects, messy drums, bass washed out by filters and effects
Midrange for the kiddies, sub bass for the headz.
Mark Rago it takes the soul out of the music. Without the bass, it no longer sounds ‘human’. Tbh, it doesn’t sound ‘from people’.
So true, Now I no I"m not alone in thinking the same thing. Its seems like in most forms of new modern electronic/sample based music the bass is so controlled and often non existent
It's because we all had/have proper speakers. Kids like shit that sounds 'good' (audible) out of an iPhone
