  • Underwater video of HMS Hermes, the Royal Navy's first purpose designed aircraft carrier, lying off the east coast of Sri Lanka.
    This video concentrates on the ship itself, part 2 on the flora and fauna living on it.

    My great uncle Roy Wilgress was a stoker on the HMS Hermes. He escaped the attack but DOW on a South African hospital ship in the pacific. His last letter is a family heirloom, that was received after my great grandmother had news of his death. It began "I am alive, but only just...". 2 years ago I visited his grave in Stellawood Cemetery, Durban. The first of my family who'd ever been able to visit him. God bless all those men.

    Sad to think all those young men died, doing their duty for king and Country, Not to mention all those mothers Fathers, brothers and sisters, never able to see their loved ones again.War is so futile, But we know, that when good men stand by and do nothing, in the face of evil, Then evil prospers, and we cannot allow that .

    40 years later, another HMS HERMES was going to fight the argies down the South Atlantic.Somehow, that namesake carrier helped defeat a military run government.

    As always great video... if you had to compare HMS Hermes diving to USS Saratoga (Bikini) or TKK how would you rate it? Planing Hermes CNY2019 or Solomon Islands... BTW, we seem to be doing the same wrecks all over the world... :-) surprisingly we have never met. Safe diving!

      HMS Hermes unfortunately doesn't look much like an aircraft carrier now, whereas USS Saratoga does. The Saratoga is the more interesting dive by far.

    Very interesting, but the music I found is rather irritating and detracts. Otherwise, excellent.

    Was Hermes the first ‘purpose designed’ aircraft carrier in history?

      @@FinnborgBraga is it capsizing with age? I know of some shipwrecks that ended up on the seafloor side ways and are now upside down do to deterioration. Think she'll end up upside down too?

    Difficult wreck dive - over 150 feet deep for most of the time - and well out to sea. Only an elite few get out here. (Horrible music for the soundtrack!!! God awful!)

    Is this recreational?

    • @FinnborgBraga
      @FinnborgBraga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your definition of 'recreational'. PADI would say no, because the maximum depth is greater than 40m, but BS-AC would say yes because it is less than 50m. It would be a twin-tank air dive, with decompression stops. Since the ship is nearly upside down, much of the interesting stuff is near the seabed.

      +FinnborgBraga do you have to ask permission from the British government?

    • @Bttfmc

      +FinnborgBraga and also is it a protected wreck?

    • @FinnborgBraga
      @FinnborgBraga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dive trip I was on did not, but the wreck is a War Grave and so there are restrictions on what can be done, eg artefacts cannot be removed, the wreck cannot be "disturbed". The whole subject is complicated, since the War Graves Act is UK legislation which (generally) only applies to UK citizens. The wreck is owned by the Royal Navy, but is in Sri Lankan territorial waters. So, it is fine to swim over the wreck taking photographs and video as an amateur, but if you want to do more then you need to consult a good lawyer!
