In May 1990, a powerful hurricane struck the Krishna District, causing extensive damage and significant loss of life and livestock. The wind speeds reached approximately 240 km/h, leading to the destruction of thousands of tiled houses due to the gale-force winds. A Kenyan Ham Radio operator provided critical information, alerting local authorities that the hurricane was expected to hit the mouth of the Krishna River at Machilipatnam. The following day, the storm made landfall near Edurumondi.
Although this cyclone was categorized as a Level 4 storm, the losses experienced were not as severe as those from a similar cyclone in 1979. The timely information allowed authorities to initiate rescue operations, which significantly reduced the overall impact and losses from the disaster.
