  • This Kenmore washing machine (Like so many other front loaders) had a broken Spider Arm Bracket after only 5 years of use in a two-person family. I was given the machine for free and repaired it. In this particular machine, the Spider bracket is part of the drum assembly (it isn't sold separately from the drum) and therefore is covered under the manufacturer's Lifetime Warranty, for the basket. It did cost me ~$80 to have a certified service tech verify that the "Basket" needed replacement, but aside from that, it only cost me about 4hrs of my time to repair this 5yr old Kenmore front load washing machine.

Mine spider arm broke inside and busted the tub in the exact same spot. Epoxy didn't hold had all, finally just bought metal straps and screwed the peice back to the tub, I know that won't pop out again. Now if they only sold the spider bracket. Gotta love Sears.

What you are looking at, is the backside of the outer drum (w/ the blue glue). The spider arm is metal and inside the drum. I'll post pics to this channel later.

The metals used in the alloy would likely not weld well. That aside, the entire bracket was disintegrated. It was truly amazing, just how much. It was like acid had been poured on the bracket. It was brittle, flaking, and simply put...falling apart in my hands. EPIC manufacturing fail.

    7. Call the warranty department at least 12hrs after the tech visits (assures tech's visit is in the system).
    8. Tell them you want them to send you a new basket, per the tech notes.
    9. in my case, they also needed to schedule another tech visit in order to send me a new basket.
    10. The new basket arrived in 2 days.
    11. I called & cancelled the tech visit the same day the basket arrived.
    12. I had to acknowledge at some point that if I installed the basket myself, there was no further warranty.

    - The cracked drum was repaired with Blue PVC cement the first time. Didn't last more than a day.
    - The second time I used regular plastic epoxy to fix the chunk of the drum. Lasted about 4 months before a small leak started.
    - Just last month I decided to try again, this time, I used MARINE epoxy after wire brushing all surfaces and cleaning them with Acetone. We'll see if it leaks again.
Keep in mind, I did all this work myself. If you aren't mechanically inclined, don't even bother.

It was a pain in the ass... Took ~2.5 weeks.
The Key to the whole warranty process: The spider bracket isn't sold separately, & can only be obtained by purchasing or getting a new basket under warranty. to which it comes attached. My argument with everyone I spoke to in the warranty dept. & with the technician who came to look at my machine was that the basket & bracket were one part & that part was the basket, & the basket is covered by a lifetime guarantee, & therefore should be replaced.

    1. Verify the bracket is broken.
    2. Call your warranty center & tell them that the drum is broken & needs replacement.
    3. They'll want to send a technician to verify @ $85/hr
4.. In my case, the tech wrote up that the entire tub/drum assembly needed replacement, including the basket. He gave me a CRAZY grand total ($800+)
    5. I denied the parts & labor on the spot. & paid the $85 for the tech visit.
    6. I received a receipt from the tech acknowledging what parts needed replacement, basket included

Now Frank and Others, would it have been econocially feesible to have taken the spider arm to a welder and have them weld it and call it a day? Just wondering.
