    Best drone video I've seen to date. I have been to the Curve about 20 years ago. Put it on your bucket list, railfans !! . . . . Phil Anderson - Minnesota

    What a beautiful place to watch trains. I can only imagine what this video would look like during the peak of fall season.. Fantastic footage, very smooth and well edited.

      We don't live near any busy railroads anymore, so I generally only record new content when I'm traveling. Hopefully I'll get a chance to record some videos this summer! 🤞

    Loved your notes. I hope you start a trend. Do you know what purpose the track up to the gazebo in the park serves? Being the curious type, I'd love to see a drone video of a little of the surrounding territory in this location and others you've done, like Deshler. Thanks!

      I'm glad you liked the notes @1ndygirl! I think that you may be referring to the funicular when you asked about the "track up to the gazebo." That's the tram that takes visitors up to the viewing area. You can either ride the funicular (which is free) or climb the 194 steps to the top.

      @1ndygirl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidLauback Yes, thanks - the funicular is what i was referring to. The word bespeaks the park's beginning - love it! I've been up and down that many steps at Waterloo.

    Thanks for the video David. You answered a lot of questions but there is one I'm curious about. Why did they not clean up the derailed cars instead of leaving them there? I wish they would still have four sets of rails. Imagine some of the sights that would show.

    Great videos! Very cool footage.
    I have a question for you.
    I will be traveling through the Altoona area on Monday.
    I see the park is only currently open Wed-Sun.
    Is there anywhere to park nearby the park and fly a drone from?
    Just somewhere I could maintain line of sight with the drone and check out the curve.
    Thanks for any help or info.

      Good question! Usually when the park is closed railfans (myself included) park on the south side of the road that goes right by the park. There's a little stone pull-off area that most people use. (I think there's a sign saying they don't want anyone parking in the grass, so if you park in that stone area you should be fine.) The pull-off area is across the road from the gift shop/museum right before the tunnel. You may be able to see the area I'm talking about in my video or on Google Maps. I hope you enjoy your trip! Have you been to Horseshoe Curve before?

      @@DavidLauback Thank you so much!!! I didn't see that gravel section as I was looking around on Google Maps but I spotted it in your video and then zoomed in on Google Street View.
      This will be my first time. I'm definitely bummed it's not going to be open but I probably won't be back in the area anytime in the near future.
      I was hoping to also check out Altoona and the engine shops.
      So, I'm hoping it's as busy as people claim.
      On a side note, I am very impressed with your drone footage.
      I also have a Mavic Pro and feel like your footage is leaps and bounds over mine.
      I don't know how much you're into photography but your video has very little noise and is extremely crisp.
      I find the trees in my footage turn to mush and anything dark has a lot of noise/grain in it.
      I have some railfan videos on my other channel NKY Railfan.
      Thanks again, I really do appreciate the help.

      Thanks! I'll definitely check out your channel! The first time I went to Horseshoe Curve I was in the same situation as you, the park was closed and I didn't know when I'd ever be back in the area. When you check out the Juniata Locomotive Shop, I would recommend parking at the corner of N. 6th St. and N. 4th Ave (or somewhere around there). You can see through the fence pretty easily, and if you're lucky you'll get to see them use the turntable!

    Why are they always screeching there ? I lived near RR tracks my whole life in Pennsylvania and never heard that

    • @DavidLauback
      @DavidLauback  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the flange of the wheel rubs against the rail on sharp corners. Since Horseshoe Curve is a particularly sharp corner, the screeching is worse than normal.
