  • RD21641(vid). Now that the 4-wheel Class 142 ‘Pacer’ DMUs have finally been withdrawn from the national network, I felt that it was time to add my one and only video of them to my TH-cam channel. So come with me and have a bounce along the scenic Esk Valley Line which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby in North Yorkshire.
I filmed it on Friday, 7th August, 1992. Copyright © Ron Fisher 2021.

Lovely scenery, noisy old train and great sights and sounds!! I bet it was a wonderful day out!!

By my recollection, the Sprinter was never the most popular of trains!! Although I’ve never traveled on one, I’ve heard that it was a very uncomfortable experience!!

The class 150 Sprinters aren't too bad, except that the seats don't line up with the windows so I get a crick in my neck whenever I ride in one. The Super Sprinters and Express Sprinters, class 156 and 158, are better. But at least all the Sprinter family are bogie vehicles.
The Pacers, classes 142, 143 and 144 (I think) are a different kettle of fish altogether. They are 4-wheel vehicles and bounce around something wicked, so most people are glad to see the back of them. I say most people, because several sets have now entered preservation, so some folk must like 'em!
