    I like the fact that they make all filters fit the base plates. For a while I said to myself “they just want people’s money” because you always had to buy a new filter for a new lens depending on the size, not anymore! Great video!

      Just fyi, with other screw in filters you can also pick up step up rings so that you can adapt other filter sizes too. That’s kind of built into the premise here but you could technically do it before too!

    I was hoping to see some image quality tests since you normally do those, though I just realized that this was a sponsored video. PolarPro is pretty famous for bad color shifting in their VNDs since they use two circular polarizers instead of combining a linear and a circular or using two linear polarizers. Drastically undermines their value and I can't find ANYONE who has tested this on these new filters.
    That opening scene cracked me up, by the way lol

  • @TomStian

    Great intro, Dunna. Not sure if you know this but Freewell came out with the magnetic VND system....a long time ago. This PolarPro setup is the exact copy of Freewell. I've used the Freewell system for over a year now. There are no scratches and my filters never fall off (even in my bag). Freewell system changed the game. This is not revolutionary at all. In fact the only different is that PolarPro is more money. I know this is a sponsored video but you should let people know they have other choices.

    • @mizshellytee
      @mizshellytee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Dunna's reviewed Freewell before?

    • @kittparker4161
      @kittparker4161 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s somewhat different from the freewell. The freewell vnd filter comes in three parts, the base ring, the vnd base and the rotating vnd. That’s two pieces of glass to remove instead of one. It’s slower and it’s hard to hold both pieces while quickly grabbing a photo. You also can’t stack filters on top of the freewell, so to use mist you have to remove the rotating vnd and replace it with the mist vnd base. The polar pro is simpler and more efficient for quick shooting

    • @MarkGoldenstein
      @MarkGoldenstein ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you want to get ND and ND+Mist for both 2-5 and 6-9 stops, then the PolarPro system is $1200 instead of Freewell’s $400.

    Question, I have the original Peter McKinnon variable ND with a screw mount to the lens. It is everything you said about convenience, especially for shooting video when one wants to maintain both the shutter angle and aperture as the light changes during continuous recording. That said, I stopped using the PK VND filter after the first couple of shoots due to the fact that changing the ND level also changes the white balance. This is a polarization issue that (I believe) affects all VND filters and is the one issue that negates whatever positives there are to variable ND filters (in my opinion). For this reason I have stuck with single-value ND filters and use ISO to the extent possible to accommodate illumination changes during long clips. Can you please comment on the effect changing the ND level using these new VND filters have on white balance? Thank and and great review (as usual).

    I always have a clear out a mist filter on my lens for protection. I'm wondering if i have one on my lens, and then the magnetic mount on top, then an ND filter, if it'll be too thick and if it'll vignette too much.
    I'm looking at the photo version.
    Wish they had an option to have the magnetic mount with a clear, mist, or empty

    So if I got the PolarPro 77mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND (in 2-5 and 6-9 stop variations), they would work with the Helix system if I just got a simple baseplate? Curious to know if I could get a variable CL filter that would stack on either as well.
    I was interested in the VND/PL combo but I'm almost always shooting on a gimbal and not being able to independently adjust the VND with one hand made that a no-go!

    So I've been using the 2-5 kit with 4 bases across 4 lenses and the the 2-5 adjustment on the ND is so tight sometimes that it actually engages the removal of the ND from the base. It's happening across all bases and it's super annoying. Imagine the ND at 2 and grab the rubber knurling to adjust from 2 to 3... but t remains in the 2 position but pops the 'maglock' off of the base... really annoying.
    The notches at each number is not ideal. I get why we want the hard stops but a softer turning experience during ND adjustment would be better. I've already contacted polar pro and they're sending me a replacement (great customer service) and they've said they had a few reports of this issue but nothing that would warrant a recall.
    For reference, I'm not a professional filmmaker/gear reviewer. I'm just a nobody who does video as a hobby. I've had my maglock kit for 2 weeks and used it for 3 weddings and it was more of a headache than not during each.
    If you want these and have the chance to try them locally first hand, do so. None of these commercials seem to have run into the problems I've had.

  • @HITESHGG

    So I bought & return this here is why.
    I have been Freewell Magnetic users for a long time although it has disadvantage of not locking feature but it has advantage of all those additional features like CPL, ND32/CPL, I can switch 6-9 on the same base.
    so i bought polarpro except that locking system i did not found anything special in these it is basically a K&F magnetic vnd begin sold for USD 100 (without locking feature) those are exactly the same you cannot use the opposite side of the filter & do not have any additional features like Freewell do with polarpro you expect to spend anywhere beyond USD 1000+.

    • @Edwin--
      @Edwin-- 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It might, but there is no good reason to leave the UV filter on under the ND Filter. The Sony 24-105mm f4 has a 77mm filter thread, so it is by any means sensible to buy an 82mm filter with a step-down ring, so you can use your nice filter on other lenses too. This also reduces the chance of vignetting, as the filter will be of larger diameter than the lens.

    Lens hood compatibility?? By appearances one would have to toss out the lens hood to be able to use this system. Is this correct? If so, seems like a bad compromise...hoods help protect the lens frontend in a big way. Also...what's the purpose of the lock mechanism? I thought the awesome benefit is that it's a magnetic system. Cool video. It pretty much sums all options.
    I do like the system. It's a great product.
    However... it is on the expensive side. Especially because of all the bits and pieces around it.
    I totally get it for professionals. (especially because all the good 2.8 lenses are 82mm filter thread... I use 77's and 62... damn splatter effect 😅)
    I go more for landscape photo... All this convenience is not really worth the price. I'd rather see the PMVND V2 system applied to a normal polariser and to the ND/PL series.
    Again, really good system. Kudos and all that! But 2 filters, 3 or 4 bases, protectors... and I'm already 50 bucks short of a good new lens.
    (and a lot of pieces means heavier on my backpack up the mountain. Every gram counts! 😂 )

      I've been using the new Mavin system. There's no hard stop on the cpl, but it's not a $1000 of inconvenience.

      Good filters have always been not cheap. I just got the Freewell magnetic system, but am already super frustrated by them falling off in my bag. For wedding filmmaking the speed is a HUGE attraction!

      @@TamarackFilmCo I’ve been happy with the Mavin magnetic set. Optically they are great so I’m willing to sacrifice the occasional falling off in the bag while saving $1000+.

    Threaded filters don’t have a problem though 😒

    So did they just screw all of us over that already bought filters outside of the Helix system? What a money grab. Would be pretty simple to add an adapter for people who already have a bunch of Polar Pro filters, no?

    Slight convenience, sure, but at double the price? This guy acts like you're swapping filters after every single shot.
    Let’s be real-if each filter costs double, what’s the real price of these so-called "quick switches" in the long run? Is locking yourself into a proprietary system at this absurd price really worth saving a few seconds of prep time once a day (if that)?

    Just not a fan of how extremely overpriced they made those filters. $230 for one 67mm filter like wtf.
