It would also be interesting a video about attaching maneuvers to finish the game off. In chess they are very useful, not only to learn how to attack but also to learn how are you gonna get attacked. Thank you very much for all the content, it's very entertaining.
Thank you a lot for your work and passion! I like it especially cos the focus is precise and the commentary is well structured and not oversaturated with infos, that makes it super clear, since we understand the principles step by step and how to use into our games. Great teacher, keep it up!
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching. I try to make each video a learning experience. It is amazing that this seemingly simple game is actually so deep.
On the surface, Hive seems to be a very simple game, but under the surface lurks a lot of depth! Check out the books that have been published about Hive strategy and tactics. The links are below.
Just got this game and played it once last night with my daughter (I won!). Love seeing the depth and strategies that can come into play for such a seemingly simple game. Will be watching more of your videos so I can keep my winning streak alive. :)
Welcome to Hive! and congratulations on your first victory. Yes, it is amazing that this simple game can be as deep as it is. Did you start with any of the expansions?
Thanks for watching and even more thanks for commenting. If you play at BoardGameArean or BoardSpace, watch for me. I would love to play a game or two.
We just discovered Hive recently and have run into a couple of situations that we cannot find in the rules. 1: When a beetle is on top of another piece, can another beetle top the first? 2: When a “black” beetle is on top of a white piece that spot is now considered black so the white can no longer spawn there. But can the black now spawn there? We have been playing as (no) to the first and (no) to the second.
1) Yes Beetles (and Mosquitos moving like Beetles) can stack atop any stack no matter how tall it is. (When playing with the Mosquito, it is possible to have a stack seven pieces high!) 2) For all spawning purposes, the color of the stack is the color of the top piece. If, for example, a Black Beetle is atop the White Queen then a Black piece can spawn directly next to the stack (assuming of course that there are no other adjacent White pieces). This actually has a name, the Direct Drop. PS - Welcome to Hive! If you have not done so, please check out the website www.BoardSpace.net. The Hive implementation there correctly applies all of the official Hive rules. (The only difference is that the Tournament Opening Rule is applied at BoardSpace, where it is not an official rule for casual play.) PPS- thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you for such a quick reply and wow… “Direct Drop” that seems SO over-powered, but 🤷♂️. Now we know. We will check out the website. Thanks again.
@@skeeterarnold9189 The Direct Drop is very powerful. That is why one must defend it against it at all times. BUT, sometimes if you count moves correctly, you can allow a Beetle Cover + Direct Drop and still win.
Although it is a strategic concept I got to develop by myself, I did like so much the statement "Surrounding the opponent queen is not the goal in hive, it is you win"
Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments. I wish that I could take credit for that statement. Sadly, I don't remember who it was that said it to me while we were playing a few years ago.

Can someone explain to me what he means by "That's not the goal. That's just how you win." This isn't Pee Wee Softball where the only goal is to have fun. The goal of every board game is to win.
Too many beginning players begin surrounding the opposing Queen as soon as possible. But if you watch the top players, they will spend more time doing other things like setting up a good defense and controlling the opponent's pieces before seeking to surround the enemy Queen. So early in the game, the goal is not surrounding the opposing Queen. But late in the game, that is how you win. The preliminary moves early (which may or may not include direct attacks on the Queen) will lead later to the surrounding of the Queen and then victory. I hope this helps. And thanks for watching and commenting!
Just found your channel after my daughter and I played our fourth game. We are amazed to see that this game played out just like our last.
Thanks for the comment, and welcome to Hive! I wish you and your daughter many happy games!
Excellent as always. A great ambassador for a great game!
thanks for the comment... sorry that i am late acknowledging it.
I've taken these axioms to heart when I first came across this video months back, honestly without you I wouldn't be able to win Hive.

I will never play without the expansions (mainly the Pillbug) but I love the tips!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, most of the top players only play with all expansions.
I just started to play this game a few weeks ago, and this very instructive! Thanks a lot, from France!

5:20 why cant the white bettle hop off the black queen and win?
White can win with either of two Ants or the Beetle.

I don't understand the question. :(
The dots are spawn points.
