- It's my 50th birthday which has caused me to reflect on my life and share that reflection with you (as embarrassing and shameful as some of it is) so you may be comforted if you are going through some of the same things. Depression, debt, health issues, mistakes, anxiety... they don't have to be the end of the world. Things always get better. I'm living proof!
Brian, thank you so much for not deleting this video. You will probably never know the value this will be to so many. Be encouraged.

I do not see aman who has failed. I see a man who has persevered through all that life has offered. That's an important lesson/realization for anyone. This video reminds me of something a friend said to me many years ago that has resonated with me ever since: We don't always get to choose our life experiences. Understanding that has helped me a lot. You are living the dream; you worked for it. Happy birthday!

My personal mantra is a Nelson Mandela quote: " Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." I am grateful I found your gardening channel. I had my first vegetable garden this year and I give credit to your advice for its success. I have a freezer full of food and have been able to share with family and friends. Thank you for being such a great teacher and sharing your kindness and your beautiful family with us all. Looking forward to seeing what will come next for your garden and homestead. I’m 75 now, life has dealt me heartaches, disappointment and at one point I wanted to end it, but God stayed by my side and He told me he would see me through it, I met my husband and finally I felt love. We were not able to have children but our lives were full and exciting. Never had much money but always had enough. I’m glad y’all recognized the miracle you had in Jonah and what a blessing from God he is. If you are lucky enough to have grandchildren you will realize how rich you really are. Today is my birthday too, I am 68. Up until 6 months ago, I thought the rest of my life would be perfect. We were retired, owned our own small ranch and were building a small herd of pedigreed Dexter cattle. Then on March 24,2024, my husband of 7 years passed away unexpectedly. My world crashed 😢. I am learning how to live without him, living our dream.v some days I live, some days I survive. I can only hope that is the light I see at the end of the tunnel. I believe in you, just as I believe in myself. We will get to where we are supposed to be. God has a plan for us.💕

Thank you for sharing this video and not deleting it. The story you tell is a story that's very familiar to so many of us. The Great Recession was a kick in the face to all of us new adults. I'm so happy you're starting your 50s in a better place than your 40s.
Thanks for your video, Brian. My family has had a traumatic 18 months. Our 40 year old son was diagnosed with cancer and after a too short battle was called to Heaven last August. I realize this isn’t the same upset and sadness you’ve experienced but your words reinforced just what I’ve been thinking about our loss. Everything in our lives have prepared us for today-and tomorrow and we can use every experience to help us find a better tomorrow. I’m oh so thankful for the 40 years we had with our precious son and I find joy in the memories we have of him. Who knows how his brief life here will have an impact on the future-I’m keeping my heart and eyes open to see it. God bless your family❤

Happy Birthday! AARP started bugging me at 50. Now 60 the funeral homes are bugging me. We are still young. Just a little slower but we have experience and wisdom. There is a lot to be thankful for. Stay positive. Life is what you make it.❤ Just remember things happen for a reason. Oh BTW, write a book on your life and give it to your son. Even though my daughter hasn't contacted me in 8 years I have that book for her if she is interested in it.

She of 72, I have beat breast cancer, have COPD and was put on oxygen 24/7 in 2017 and on 2023 was taken off oxygen due to major lifestyle changes ... Diet, exercise and a whole lot of prayer. I have watched you for almost your entire time on TH-cam and I can now grow a wonderful garden and live life the way God has intended us to! You my friend, should be a motivational speaker, you brought me to years. Garden on!

Thank you so much for sharing this personal and amazing story with us. Life is a journey--a winding, twisting, up and down journey that we never plan for ourselves. I’m 54, and things are not perfect and our family struggles at times, but gardening and just the simple and beautiful moments in this life make me happy. We make our plans but God directs our steps. ✨ I truly have peace in the chaos because of my faith. A very wise older person once told me, when I was a sprout that humans are like the stones we throw into the center of the pond. The stone has absolutely no idea what effect the ripples will have but they move out and away. Like the Christmas movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, we have no real idea how we effect others lives. You have bravely shared your life with strangers. You have no idea how many people you may have saved, inspired, made laugh, giggle or shake their heads in wonderment. Happy Bday man! I don't want to alarm you, AARP sends out membership at 50....I know this as my husband turned 50 last December and two weeks later he received the membership invite in the mail 😂. Anywho...thanks for posting the video. I turn 49 next Saturday, and I have just entered my year of health. We are always growing and evolving. It is what defines us as human. 😊

Happy Birthday. Love this video. I too was only able to have 1 child. Her father didn't want to be married so I raised her by myself. Talk about over whelming. Now I am in my 60's looking back and realizing I haven't had the life I envisioned. I am grateful for my 4 grandkids. I do not have much but I have them and my health. God is great.

I completely understand what you are talking about with the anxiety. I had my first panic attack at 21, two months after my second daughter was born. Being so young, nobody wanted to listen to or believe me so I suffered for a while before my own doctor wanted to listen. My panic attacks were extremely debilitating for the first 5 years, now at 49 they are better but not gone. I met my husband at 16 and we were so happy for our first 5 years together and I am so surprised he's still here. I don't really remember the last 20 years because of the stress, depression, and anxiety. On top of it all I hurt my back, under went a bunch of injections and ended up with cervical cancer, and my body reacting to said injections in a very bad way. My body started making extreme amounts of testosterone, so I developed hair on my face and body like a man and nobody knows how to help me. I don't ever leave my home unless I absolutely have have to, nor do I let anyone ever see my face when I do. So I suffer in silence everyday, however watching your videos brings me joy and comfort because I can truly relate and until someone has suffered with these things themselves, they cannot really understand they just can't....not really. But I love you guys, and keep up the wonderful things you do and God bless you
I also have the heavy hairy problem on my face, my face and neck. I have mo idea how long it would grow to. I just decided, hey if men can shave their face so can I. It's not hard. Just let your husband show you. I just use a throw away razor. I used to shave every other day when I was in my twenties. Now I shave every day, in the morning when I get ready for the day. By the way, you can use the excuse of having cancer to use a face mask.
When shaving just use soap on your skin then shave very lightly. You'll be fine. You are not the only women with this problem. There are many of us.

With a few differences, I would say that I have had very similiar experiences to you. Only difference is that I only had 1 child and was done after the one, and that I never really got off the ground with any of my business ideas. I have the mountain of debt, the dreams of a house on a private lake, the rv...nearly everything. At 35 I feel like I have barely achieved anything. My health scare is liver related and I am still trying to figure out what it might be but its super scarey. I have so much hope for so much more. Some days I feel very down, and other days I feel very thankful. I have been following you since you were California Gardening TV, and you continue to inspire me. Happy Birthday!
When I hit 50 I had the epiphany that I was at least halfway through my life, and was what I was doing the way I wanted to spend the time I had. I decided that I was doing work that served others and hopefully made their lives easier/better. I've retired now, and am doing only what I want to do. 😉 To be honest, the 50s were great years for me. I hope you have the same experience.

Be so encouraged that you have made most of your aspirations from your 20s come true by the grace of God. You live very close to family - maybe not on the same compound, but close. You have made beautiful gardens on your very large property. You are still going - adding more gardens, added farm animals, pond (close enough to a lake), etc. You have a smaller scale version of your dream property. And you have a loving wife and son - do NOT take that for granted.
This is coming from a woman who dreamed of a family, but God had other plans (no husband or children for me - most of my nieces/nephews live very far away). I dream of a property like yours and hope I am in good enough health to be able to do a fraction of what you've done when I can finally retire some day, if the Lord allows. I also take for granted the things God has provided for me, too. Although I wouldn't have picked the life I have working long hours in technology, God has always protected my job. I do live close to my twin sister now, and I am paying off my mortgage on a modest suburban home - hopefully before I turn 58.

Happy 50th Brian, mine is in March. I went through IVF for my first, but was lucky the first time, But was divorced a year later. 21 years later I have 3 beautiful kids. Amazing story. We both found gardening as a passion and decided to help others. I started youtube as a way to save money on memory cards, Ive been on it since 2007 but realised at 2012 that people were watching.. Love all your channels pal. Great video I love peoples back stories. Life throws us challenges Im so sorry that this has been happening to you but Im glad you found the positives in life. Your hard work made it happen mate. You deserve it all.

Thank you for this video. I, too, had a life intertwined with hardships and blessings, but for the most part I only focused on all those trials and missed living. I am now almost 64 years old and God has blessed me with a caring husband, a home where we are learning how to grow our own food and learn many if the traditional skills we should had been doing when we were younger. However, it was us who needed to go through all of that to be able to humbly receive and be taught now. How truly blessed we are. Thank you for sharing

I found myself going from a 55-60 hour a week job to nothing!!

I continued to watch your channel because you talked about the different zones and you knew what you were talking about. I had a successful garden this year with a few failures but I understand why those things didn't work. I learn so much from you and I thank you. You've become a part of my life and I think what a shame it would be if I never got to know you and your wonderful family. Everyone told us it was a pipe dream. Well we DID prove everyone wrong and have lived here over 25 years now!🌴😻Embracing the farm life on Maui in Haiku at 66 years old. I too had a brain tumor at 40 years old. I adore your channels and your little family. It’s a blessing to be able to be so real to the people that care about you (us You Tubers)to be honest and forthcoming about personal struggles and triumphs. Happy 50th birthday! This is one of the best videos you've ever done, and it brought me to tears because a lot of my life has been similar and I'm struggling at the moment at age 45. I'm so happy for you.
I hope things improve for you. I was overwhelmed and struggling a few days ago. A random question from a friend led to a chat session that got me "out of my head" and feeling much better. Find someone to talk to, or call a helpline, or rewatch this video! Sometimes we just need to see someone else's troubles to realize our own issues aren't impossible road blocks to life.

I was one of those early viewers who came along after picking my tomatoes off the ground because the cages didn't work for my large crop. My garden took off after using your vertical method idea, and I was hooked on your honest & candid channel, and I look forward to watching many more.
My baby will be 47 in November, so I'm a few years older than you are, but one thing I have learned over the years is not to look back, because you can't change a thing, but keep your eyes up and follow His leading. We are heading into some hard times.

I think most of us have gone through something similar. As my old neighbor used to say “Everybody’s got their own book”. Btw cluster headaches ore just horrible. I’m so sorry for all the medical things you’ve endured. But you are an overcomer and you have your life on the right priorities. God bless!

I can totally relate. I’m 10 years older than you. My sons are in their 30’s now and feel this way. We struggled when they were young and my dad had a house we rented for cheap until we could finally afford our own. Now we’re retired and don’t have lots of money to travel but we have a pop up camper and go to campgrounds and appreciate the scenery and the fact that we can afford to do that. Hopefully my garden the vegetables will grow better now that I have more time to fiddle around out there. 100+ degrees in California about killed everything except my tomatoes. Thanks for sharing. It’s your honesty that makes you relatable.

You are completely right. God knows exactly what he's doing, He knew for me that since I am such a stubborn old girl that I needed to learn through experience otherwise I wouldn't have listened so carefully with what he was showing and whispering to me.
I am 70 year's old now and still not listening at times, but underneath it all, I know he's right.
I am exactly where I need to be at this moment in time.
All those prayers are now coming to fruitation, just not what I thought it should be. They are all being answered. I have been so blessed the past 4 years, but I didn't see it. Am I supposed to be taking that other road to the left, only God knows.
Happy 50. Joined that club this year too. I’ve also struggled with anxiety to the point of burn out at work. I still struggle with anxiety even while placing the burden at my Father’s feet. Even when rewarded for doing well, I feel inadequate. Keep faith and push forward. Live in grace. Thanks for sharing.

I have been around your channels for about two years, starting watching TH-cam videos after I retired. Very happy to have found your channels. I have watched all of your videos since I started, and gone back to watch many of the old ones. Just bought my forever home in May, and am getting ready to start my garden.
