20:54 I think the reason why Norman got too many screen time in Season 5 is because he was probably a fan favorite character like Devious Diesel from Thomas. Norman used to be a fan favorite character, until HiT Entertainment Xing Xing Digital & Mattel decided to botch him and turn him into an evil villain prior to CGI Fireman Sam in 2008

@@HarveyRivers but they sorta flanderized norman in fireman sam in action and season 5 actually, which means he is flanderized prior, they made him a villain, which contradicts season 1 to 4, even though that art style or the designs look a bit babyish like to me at least in season 1 to 4

I think the reason why they made Sam ginger is because in some scenes of the season 1-4 era the lighting makes Sam’s hair look orange instead of brown.

I wholeheartedly agree that Series 4 was PEAK Fireman Sam. The scripts and storylines were fantastic. They captured the balance of light (the comedy) and dark (the serious emergencies) perfectly. How can anyone say Series 5 is better than episodes such as Deep Trouble For Sam and Trevor's Bus Boot Sale? And especially Snow Business.
Nia Ceidiog seriously deserves more credit. She was a great writer.
Series 5 is overrated to me aswell.
I sound a hypocrite if I say" fans just choose the version they grew up with" cos I'm favouring the original and grew up with the original.
I think most fans favour this era because of the lip sync on the puppets, the smoother animation and of course, the iconic, upgraded call out theme.
When Series 5 came out, I was 12 (10 if you count when it was produced) but I wanted to check it out as Fireman Sam was my favourite.
I decided to overlook the change of puppets and voice acting, but the constant use of Norman got very irritating.
That's Series 5's biggest flaw IMO. Using Norman to cause almost every incident whether accidentally or not, is such a lazy way of story telling which both Series 5 and the CGI version are guilty of.
I wanted to see more of Trevor, Bella and Sam off duty.
I also didn't like the rubber hair on the puppets and Elvis becoming more stupider and those new toy like vehicles threw off more of the realism too. Why get rid of the numberplates?
HiT definitely aimed their products at pre-schoolers and Series 5 showed this.
My parents and grandparents enjoyed the original and Joshua Jones too, but when Series 5 came out, they found it too infantile due to the lack of adult jokes and maturer references and also with the repetitivness of Norman being rescued in 99.9% of episodes.
Steele Isn't too bad in this series though, to be honest. He has become an unrealistic manchild in the cgi version, which is just pathetic. Just because it's aimed at toddlers doesn't imean every character has to act like a toddler
I like John Sparkes's take on Sam, it's better than his Trevor. But Alderton is the true and best voice of these characters, hands down. Not only did he do a perfect job, he was the ORIGINAL. I'll have people saying it was Gareth Lewis, but I am obviously referring to the English version here.
Both John's were more suiting than Steve Kynman. I think most can agree on that.
I have the annuals. The story of Norman scaring everyone with his gorilla mask reminded me of the episode 'Bug Eyed Boy from Venus' too. Maybe Robin Lyons and the other Series 5 writers looked at these old stories for inspiration

    • @HarveyRivers
      @HarveyRivers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Indeed, it was a interesting season. Definitely not as bad as CGI and has some golden nuggets hidden underneath, but series 1 to 4 are way superior in my opinion.

    • @cridly
      @cridly ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was Gareth Lewis! There I said it, I'm a people saying it was Gareth Lewis.
I don't think Steele was too bad either but he was still treated a bit more like a joke than a serious authority figure. Also I'm not a fan of the jokes about his weight. It didn't really matter before, why does it now? Only reason why there were jokes about Trev was because he's a big eater, yet they still acknowledged skinny Elvis was unfit as well in "Spot of Bother". But I think still skinny Elvis was handled worse.

Another thing that's really weird with season 5 is that the fireman's tunics are changed from black to blue I just find this decision weird because the uniforms they wear are based on the old fireman uniforms worn in England at the time and the tunics were black

  • @joshproductions07
    @joshproductions07 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I thought it was amazing. I know I could be biased as it's the Fireman Sam I grew up with, but I always knew that there was something about it that the CGI series didn't have.
I'm sorry to admit this, but when I was young, I wasn't the biggest fan of the original series, as I was a millennium kid, as it looked outdated, but I would then see more of a charm about it years later.
But the thing was, Series 5 has always been my favourite series, even when the CGI series was out. The animation really looked nice to me, and I actually like the redesigns of the characters. Unlike Postman Pat, which is a more softer show in comparison with Fireman Sam, I think the less realistic hair and the less cartoon-like faces suit the action aesthetic of the show better, as I think that's what they were going for. I like how it looks like Bob the Builder.
Norman was obviously the writers' favourite character, and they really showed that in the series. Also, some of Elvis' dumb moments actually are funny. Like in Joker Soaker where Steele talks in very proper English, Elvis responds with saying "Can't we just catch him and take the thing off him," which I thought was funny. And in Carnival of Junk, he makes fun of Steele's age, when Steele tries to think of what he did as a child, Elvis responds with "hunting for dinosaurs," which I thought was hilarious.
I believe the animation studio they got to animate Series 5 was perfect, as HiT could of simply animated it themselves under their animation studio, Hot Animation. But they didn't, and got a Welsh studio to do it. HiT actually only owned 50% of Fireman Sam at the time, with S4C owning the other 50%, which stayed until 2007, when HiT gained full rights to the show.

So I kinda boycotted the show for years out of fear. Ik Ik, until I gained the courage as a 6 year old to try this new series by getting the let it snow dvd and was essentially completly hooked. 25:03 If I was in charge of the movie as writer and director, which I’ve should’ve been because I was 5 years old back in 2009, if I was born in 1974, in 2007, I would work for Gullane and HiT Entertainment to help make Season 6 of Fireman Sam, and would be in charge as writer and director of the movie Fireman Sam: The Great Fire of PontyPandy. And here are 8 ways that I would fix the movie, along with Season 6 onwards.
    1. Hire Cosgrove Hall to animate the show instead of switching it to CGI by Xing Xing Digital. I know Stop Motion could cost a lot of money and be very expensive, but I think the original Stop Motion Fireman Sam is better, so I would reject the idea CGI Fireman Sam and have it switched back to how it was through seasons 1 to 4 all together.
    2. Keep PontyPandy as it was in wales instead of having it located near the sea for no apparent reason.
    3. Giving Charlie and Bronwyn Jones an introduction to the series. I learned that Charlie and Bronwyn were Sarah and James’s parents when I watched Season 6 on PBS Kids Sprout, and on Netflix, but the problem is, they just appeared out of nowhere for no reason and No Introduction whatsoever. Same with Radar the Dalmatian.
    4. Cut Norman Price from being the main villain of the series from Season 6 onwards, and replace him with a new character. Don’t worry, I would still keep Norman in the series, but keep him in his Season 1 to 5 format only. I would create a character for the main villain of the movie and possibly season 6 onwards who would happen to be an evil brother of Norman Price, named Nelson.
    5. Keep the cast and characters likable and not annoying, except for the main antagonist of the movie. So for my take on the Great Fire of Pontypandy, I would use John Alderton as Fireman Sam, my friend Trevor Davis as Trevor Evans (if he knows how to do a welsh accent), Su Douglas as Dillys Price, John Sparkes as Station Officer Steele, Elvis Cridlington, and Norman Price, Steve Kynman as Nelson Price and Charlie Jones, Tegwen Tucker as Bronwyn Jones, Sarah Hadland as Penny Morris, Mandy Flood, and Bella Lasagna, David Carling as Mike Flood and Tom Thomas, Joanna Ruiz as Helen Flood, Sarah and James Jones, and possibly Ifan Huw Dafydd as Gareth. (If the PontyPandy Flyer appeared in the original series)
    6. Have Warner Bros distribute the Fireman Sam movie.
    7. Keep Dillys’s Shop the same way as in the original series instead of just turning it into a supermarket. Which I have to call bull trash about because a normal supermarket is like, 10 TIMES BIGGER THAN DILLYS PRICE’S GENERAL STORE!
    8. Keep the season 8 episodes in order. For example, you have to put the episode Water Tower Inferno as episode 2, and put Runaway Train as episode 4, instead of just putting them out of order. Besides, I think in my headcannon that the PontyPandy Railway station opened before the Pontypandy flyer was hijacked by Nipper the Dog.
And also, if I was in charge of the Fireman Sam Movie : The Great Fire of Pontypandy, then I would give it a theatrical release in both UK and US. I would have it released in cinemas in the UK on October 2009, and have it released in theaters in the USA in the summer of 2010, which would do so well in the US Box Office that it would join Toy Story 3 during its release.

I gave two Norman’s nicknames to avoid confusion:
Stop motion Norman: "The Real Norman Price"

I was listening to some 80s Sam audiobooks yesterday and there was one called "it's a dogs life" read by Jeremy Bulloch, instead of Alderton, and Jeremy's voice in the audiobook is identical to John Sparkes' voice, it's a coincidence but it is very similar in how the accent is depicted, and I do like the authentic ness of sparkes voice (maybe the deepness could show sam is older in series 5? he does have a birthday episode)
I like both voices but I do prefer how Alderton used more local terminology (like Aye, darro etc)
I do prefer the simple design of classic era, I agree about Elvis, I do prefer the updated intro, it does show him do more firefighter things other than sliding down the staircase and hearing the alarm.
Trouble and Squeak I think is up there as one of the good series 5 episodes that retained the charm that the classic era had
Trevor likely gave up the job due to his issues with heights, that was a big issue with him, but he clearly has retained some his knowledge and experience, like when he alerts to dilys and norman to leave in "the big freeze" when the electric blanket causes the fire.

Make no bones about it, I think Season 5 of Fireman Sam had both amazing animation and music. And ever since I watched it on PBS Sprout growing up in the US, it is my introduction to not only Fireman Sam but also Welsh culture in general. I eventually discovered the classic 4 seasons that were made in the late 80s and early 90s, which were all timeless, memorable, and mean a lot to me.
However I do think this version of Fireman Sam was pretty short lived. It may seem like it was a the beginning of the end for Fireman Sam, which it is thanks to executive meddling from HiT, I feel that this version should’ve gotten a stop motion version of Season 6 instead of suddenly transitioning from stop motion to cgi. But I knew why it was short lived. Besides the executive meddling from HiT, the studio who made Season 5 “Siriol Entertainment” went under a overhaul in 2005 and it was renamed to Calon. It meant production on the new stop motion series of Fireman Sam would have to be halted to just merely 1 season, and since then, S4C had no choice to try and continue the show with HiT by turning it into the worst looking cgi imaginable. Even the cgi seasons made me turn the show off as they’re on Sprout.

I understand your copyright concerns, but I honestly find the low-pitched audio track funny, especially with the voices. They remind me of two bass-sounding actors: Thurl Ravenscroft (voice of Tony the Tiger) and Brad Garrett (a.k.a. Robert Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond). Imagine Ravenscroft as Fireman Sam, Station Officer Steele, and Mike Flood; and Garrett as Elvis Cridlington.
Series 5 has indeed a lot more action but isn't quite as good as the original four seasons. Not only it shows a completely different design but contains some continuity issues as well as some changes in character personalities. I think the original series would more likely become nostalgia than the newer version, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

One thing I really didn't like with season 5 was how the characters had hair that was clearly sculpted unlike the original series where they used what looks like actual hair and I didn't like how very limited the mouths were where is the original series the characters had static mouths but we're able to show expressions in the mouths in season 5 because the mouths were built into the model just so they could get the mouths to move when they spoke this just made the mouth expressions more limited as the characters couldn't show any mouth expressions other than a smile which to be fair works with shows like Bob the Builder but it just doesn't work with Fireman Sam because of how realistic the human characters are meant to look

This video is great! Very interesting topic, when i was younger i first witnessed Seasons 5-6 of Fireman Sam when it would air on Sprout. While i respect your opinion on S5,12:26 i do agree with you here that this season was definitely the start of the downfall of Elvis as a character, but nothing really bad really starts until season 6 and future cgi seasons where he becomes very dumb imo. I also agree with you with the Score and Animation for this season, the stop motion in this season truly gives me Aardman vibes but that could be just me haha. Also pretty sure the composers Ben Heneghan and Ian Lawson came back for S5 as their last season. Which is a shame because after S5, the score downgraded pretty hard imo.

I personally don't hate series 5, obviously nothing beats the first four seasons, but unlike the CGI reboot, the one in 2003 does share the similarities from the original like Penny's fitness training, Dilys flirting with Trevor and Sam's potato picker and still being an inventor.
Also I do like the idea of Norman Price having a frenemy around his age, given that Sarah and James are two years younger than him (until I realised that Norman and the twins were the same age in the original, the twins were only aged down in the CGI reboot) And I always thought Norman was always one of the main character throughout the franchise, I always thought his shenanigans are what make the stories interesting, especially in the classics series like Norman's Tricky Day and What Goes Up.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like Mandy, as well as the Floods and Tom Thomas were a great addition to the series.
The voices for the characters, I personally think they are way more tolerable than the CGI reboot by far especially the kid characters. (Dilys, I'd say give or take)
My only gripe with the series 5 was Trevor no longer being a part-time firefighter. Even though there was an episode when Trevor did still have his firefighters skills when he used a fire distinguisher to put down Bella's pizza oven, so it does some continuity of the original, but I definitely agree with you about Elvis and the lack of consistency. Personally, if they'd kept the same format for future seasons instead of the god awful CGI reboot, we'd have more stories focusing on other characters besides Norman as well as more development and growth from other characters especially Sam and Elvis, it'll felt more like the classic series but modernised in the right way.

I can respect you’re opinion because I actually loved season 5 and it’s one of the best seasons of the show that I considered canon and I understand the complexities of this 5th season and i find the style of the models to be unique and my favourite is joker soaker because of Norman and his joker soaker. And it canonically ended fantastically with let it snow which the cgi series isn’t canon to the season 1-5 era because in my headcanon the stop motion one and the cgi one are two separate universes
Boy that’s a long comment I did there? But the question I have with the case of the Licorice shoelaces episode is what was Norman going to tell dilys before she interrupts him? Because Norman said is
      "Mam, Guess what a-"
