  • Group projects can be a nightmare. We've all been there before. You have a huge project due for a class, and someone isn't pulling their weight. As tempting as it may seem, taking on all the work is not good teamwork or good leadership.
What do you do when a group member is slacking off on a project? How can you complete a group project and make sure everyone does the job they need to do? In this video I'll cover some of the best ways to deal with a team or group member who is distracted, unreliable, or just lazy. You'll learn lots of clear steps for working with slacking group members, and some research-backed tips and tricks for dealing with social loafing.

I am so grateful for your video. You were able to discuss everything that I think is very realistic and applicable. I am involved in a 3 member group, but both of them have a reputation for being slackers, and this gives me so much anxiety for I will work with them for a whole semester.

One kinda annoying thing that I experienced is when something like "Group Cooperation" or "Group Participation" is in the rubric, so the group takes a hit just because the difficult person happens to be in the group. In the worst-case scenario, your choices will be either to let them scott-free (lie about their contribution to the prof or on some peer evaluation shit) or to lose points (don't lie).

That’s really annoying! If Group Participation is part of your grade and you know someone won’t do the work, I definitely would talk to the teacher or professor as soon as possible. If they don’t do anything, make a list of all the times that group member slacks off and keep it for reference after the project. By documenting when they refuse to help, you may be able to negotiate your grade.

I usually get stuck with at least one lazy person. I do not mind lazy people. I usually end up doing all the work myself and everyone gets to enjoy the 95+% mark. Some teachers have a policy and some don’t. It’s very frustrating as they enjoy the fruits of your sweat equity.

I am doing a semeter long labs with same partner and they are just never putting in work. we basically have 6 heavy physics lab to do with the same partner and the class is 300 level. I have talked to my professor about this during my 2nd lab. Even the professor cannot help me enough since she still gave me majority of labs with this person because of logical reason which is we only have 8 people in the class and everyone has a pair and I have it with dude. Ive to stick with him until I hit 4 labs out of 6 and next week is 4th lab which is again with them. I am super frustrated bc I have to work everything on my own and I can only do so much! it has given bad impression to my professor bc we take longer to finish lab. Idk what to do.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having to deal with this! The good news is you’re already doing some things right. I understand the prof is in a tight spot not being able to change groups because of the small class. I would contact them again and offer a few solutions. For example, you could suggest having everyone in the class switch groups to make it more equitable for the rest of the semester. Or, you could offer to demonstrate your skills in a different way if you feel your partner is a hindrance. The most important thing is to work as strongly and positively as you can. You can use this experience in future classes, jobs, or interviews. Think about what you can learn and gain from the experience and how you can use it to grow. Best of luck!
