I m not sure, but if i would guess, its some kind of flexible rubber. It applies pressure to his finger pushing blood into fingertip. That adds sensitivity to your fingers, probably even hardens the tip. All just guessing.
i dont think so the calluses on guitar players hands are normally good enough to take any sliding around but i suppose if his calluses were gone from not playing in a while you could be right :)
